Close encounter sneeze (M)

At the check-out of the local supermarket yesterday evening. Next through the check-out was a man of about 40, not very tall, casually but carefully dressed, buying ready-made meals.

I was just gathering my purchases while he was beside me taking care of his, when he leant back a little and sneezed a quite open “Arassshh ah!” - no sniff, no blow after, just getting on with putting his purchases in a bag.

The cashier made no remark, and I waited a couple of seconds to see if there was another sneeze on the way, and then said “à vos souhaits” – we were so close that it seemed hard not to say anything. The man murmured “merci” with pursed lips, then gave a brief smile and was off. I suspect we have more in common than just living in the same area.
