atchoum Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Just been to Istanbul for a week, and thought I’d better report about Turkish sneezes. As far a stifling goes, most Turks seem uninhibited, especially the men. I didn’t see any men stifle at all, on the contrary, those I did see just let rip, but all singles. For women, it depends. I saw three postgrad women students sneeze, all aged around 25. One – a small blond - sneezed open doubles several times, only making minimal effort to tone them down. Another though sneezed one completely stifled double, looking most embarrassed about it. And yet another – a very tall, elegant woman, sitting in the back seat of a car – I was in the front – gave a very open, almost masculine sneeze, and (I imagine) excused herself in Turkish afterwards.The best sneezes for me were heard not seen, and turned out to be from a Frenchman, as I realised when we went through customs after the flight. It was in the plane, and I heard a very guttural (you might almost think he was preparing to throw up – excuse me, emetophobics! ), completely open-mouthed, uninhibited sneeze coming from a row or two behind me. Fortunately when I was getting something out of the locker about an hour later there was another of these very distinctive sneezes and though I missed the sneeze itself, I saw the man coming out of it – a man in his forties, completely shaven head, dark, and neat features. And to cap it off, about an hour after that, yet another of these crazy sneezes, which of course I didn,t see either. He must have been sensitive to the dried out air on the plane. I did regret not sitting next to him, but the sound was good enough!
