Here's a radio feature on handkerchiefs I found, from Woman's Hour on BBC Radio 4.

It has a discussion with a female journalist who uses hankies, and some talk about their history. You can stream it from this link (I'm not sure whether it will work outside of the UK).

There's also an older one- but more to do with hankies as a fashion accessory, not for nose-blowing:

On the Fox TV series "The Good Guys," Bradley Whitford's character is constantly using a handkerchief, though usually in gross/disgusting (comic) ways. Whitford, a native of Wisconsin, is best known for his previous role as Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman in "The West Wing." The series itself is fun, and also stars Colin Hanks, son of Tom Hanks.

Some TV observations involving handkerchiefs:

On the Bones episode "The Maggots in the Meathead" -- who names these things? -- Booth (David Boreanaz) questions a woman who starts dramatically crying. He offers her his handkerchief, but she doesn't take it and soon moves on to another emotion. So he kind of plays with his handkerchief for a minute or two, I guess in case she changes her mind about accepting it, while continuing to question her. I haven't seen a clip of this online but I believe it was in the first 10 or 15 minutes of the episode.

On a Castle episode, I believe "Punked," Castle (Nathan Fillion) suavely offers Beckett his large white handkerchief, so she can pick up a piece of evidence. It occurred towards the end of the episode.

On the Fringe episode "Entrada," the Broyles from the alternate universe (Lance Reddick) offers his handkerchief to Olivia to wipe surgical ink off her face (where the bad guys had planned to dissect her, to study her universe-shifting talent! :-) ). In a continuity error, though, most of the ink was already gone, so it was more to establish the chivalrousness of his character. Perhaps 4/5 of the way through the episode.

More TV-related observations:

Richard Roxburgh sneezes and blows his nose in his handkerchief on two occasions, in this clip from the Australian show Rake, episode 5. There is also a similar scene earlier in the episode, but not available on YouTube that I'm aware of. Originally found by Fifi, on the red forum.

Castle, "Last Call":

Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) uses his handkerchief again to handle potential evidence.

Anyone who is a fan of hoarseness, fevers, and talk about the two might be interested to check out episode 3 of 'Adam Hills in Gordon Street Tonight'. Youtube Link for pt 1 Nothing exceptionally exciting, but some nice male hoarseness and throughout and a few moments of material about Adam Hills being sick. And if you like the feverish look, definitely worth watching! Hills looks like death warmed over.

NCIS: Los Angeles, "Harm's Way"

Sam (played by LL Cool J) uses a handkerchief to handle some evidence -- takes it out of his back pocket, whips it open, it's on display for about a minute. Episode is currently available on hulu.com, and scene is at about 7:30. Callen (played by Chris O'Donnell) has also had a handkerchief on several occasions on this series.

The Mentalist:

Simon Baker's character Patrick Jane has had a handkerchief more often lately, for example to handle evidence. This is a step up from the episode "Cackle-bladder Blood," when his brother-in-law Danny Ruskin (played by Kevin Rankin) had to lend him a handkerchief to wipe blood off his face. An evidence-handling handkerchief is also carried by series regular Owain Yeoman (what a great name) who plays Wayne Rigsby.

In "The Adjustment Bureau" movie, there's a couple indications that Matt Damon's character carries a handkerchief regularly. He appears to be using one to mop up spilled coffee on a bus, and it also looked like there was one as part of his pocket contents on his nightstand table. Both quick shots, so I may be mistaken, but his character is the type of professional that would carry one.

Loads of pics of mens and ladies handkerchiefs, some really nice ones

Kleeny, you keep bringing up hanky memories for me!! I went to this page and the ladies hankies caught my eye. I suddenly remembered having hankies like this as a child! I think they were a gift from my grandmother. I felt so mature and refined having those! Thanks for stirring up yet another happy hanky memory!!
