CarellFan
I was wondering if people have a favorite type of allergy - a favorite substance to see produce an allergic response in someone else, (or in yourself, if you like sneezing) and if so, why it's your favorite?I think mine is pollen (hayfever). My reason is that I find it so endearing that someone would start sneezing uncontrollably due to something as perfectly natural (and beautiful!) as Mother Nature herself... My other favorite is cats, probably because they're so cute and innocent... I mean, it's not like they TRY to offend, and yet they can easily conquer someone many times their size... guess I find the person being conquered by something so small and cute to be endearing as well! Trillium
Cats. So very many people are allergic to cats (and when they are, they tend to be quite allergic to them), and cat dander is everywhere. Link to comment
Quills & Wells
Pollen from plants & treesReason: It's natural & sometimes produces wonderful fits & people can't get away from it. Its in their air Link to comment
The Mute Poet
I'd have to agree with Trillium in that my favorite is cat allergies as well. There's just something about the sound of a cat allergy sneeze... and just the whole scenario it sets up. I've found that in a situation where a person is having a sneezing fit because of a cat, alot of the time there's no easy way to just get away (ie: they just got to a party, but the dander's all over the house).Another thing I've found is the whole unpredictability factor of the allergy. Someone with pollen allergies would rightly expect there to be alot of pollen on a sunny, windy summer's day, and medicate themselves accordingly. But cat allergic people could easily be completely caught with there defenses down by visiting someone and realising to their allergy-pill-less horror that they have a cat Hayfever's also a close second in my book too. Man, what a great topic... Link to comment
Secret
Tough but good question...I'd say cat sneezes because I do, in fact, have cats. The whole "Oh no, I'm allergic to cats!" scenario is pretty satisfying itself, and the fact they know they're going to sneeze and it's just a matter of time until they do is pretty enjoyable. But the ensuing fit is what it's really all about! Alas nothing like that has ever happened to a girl around me, but it does happen to one of my friends. Then again pollen allergies also have their charm. Pollen allergies are fun [to me] because people would likely be complaining about the amount of pollen and how it drives their allergies crazy. Both of them are good and I suppose it depends on the situation to really decide. Link to comment
Blah!?
Overall, I have to say dust is my favorite. I don't really know why. I guess there are just a bunch of cute situations that can kick up dust and get a girl sneezing.I'm also starting to like dog allergies quite a bit, but I don't have a reason for this one either. confetishcake
I think I'd have to say dust and cats are two biggies. Link to comment
sneezybreezy
Pollen allergies/Hayfever/flowers is my ultimate favorite allergy because they just can't stop sneezing. Most of the time the medication doesn't work or wears off too or makes the person too drowsy to actually use it, so they sneeze thier head off. I also like perfume sneezes although they go by very quickly because they usually sound perfect! I don't like cat allergies because I suffer very badly from it, even if I am around a person that has a cat that has hair/dander on them! (It was horrible when my labprep had a million cats at home and she would be covered in hair/dander and come to my lab to work, I think I posted a wav like forever ago an hour after the encounter since I know there are a lot of cat lovers) I totally feel the pain for the person that goes through it, although I would like to listen. sneezedreamer
Dust is my favorite, without a doubt. There's a ton of dust out there, and it's always in season. It makes pretty much everyone sneeze, not just dust-allergic people, so when you put lots of people in a dusty situation, you'll probably hear lots of sneezes!Hayfever probably comes in second on the list for me...again, hard to avoid, and I also like how it becomes a frequent topic of conversation! Hollur22
hmmm i would have to say pollen since its a very common allergen, it makes people REALLY sneezy, and as Endless said its pretty much unavoidable. Link to comment
HarleyQuinnSFF
dust. i really dont know why. :] Link to comment
CarellFan
Although I didn't rate dust as one of my top choices, in a way, I think household dust is the most inescapable allergen of them all -- not only can you never eliminate it all, you also have to sleep indoors, so other than choosing to camp outside and never go inside, you are FORCED to live with dust for at least 7-8 hours a day, 365 days a year... whereas with pollen, not only is it a seasonal allergy, but I suppose you can keep your windows shut and don't really have to leave the house on a bad pollen day or spend very much time outdoors if you don't want to, depending on your lifestyle, of course (like if you work at home, for example). And with cat allergies, if you get invited to a social gathering, you can always phone the host/hostess ahead of time to find out if they have a cat (I've heard people ask this before) and then decide whether or not it is worth the risk of going. But I guess if medication really works for you, then household dust becomes less of an issue and you can just take your medication automatically every day... But still, pollen and cats are by FAR my top two allergies, and truthfully, they are pretty much tied (even though I ended up going with pollen -- I just FORCED myself to pick one!) I agree with The Mute Poet... the unpredictability factor is... well... yummm... And the more the person can't easily get away, the better, as several others have noted (barring serious reactions, of course, which I do not want to see under any circumstances!!) I've found that cat-allergic people who end up at a house where there are cats always end up leaving the party EARLY... but at least they will usually stick around for the first bit... probably because they don't want to seem rude (although I'm sure people would understand!) Oooh, lucky you!!! *envious grin* I find that the allergic people I've ended up being around usually just curse them and avoid contact... but you are right, cats usually seem to have an attraction to people who are allergic to them... maybe they seek extra attention from those they feel ignored by...? Tree pollen and grass pollen are my absolute favorites.Does hay count as grass or does it count as its own? Good question! I would think... it counts as its own?I guess I generalized too much when I picked "hayfever" in my first post. For my favorite allergen under that heading, I will pick... oh this is hard... ragweed, I think! The reason is that I like the "sound" of the word ragweed, because with trees and grass, I have both non-allergy related and allergy-related imagery in my head, but with ragweed, allergies is the ONLY context I EVER hear it said in, so it is a very sexy word to me! But in another way, I wanted to pick trees instead... because they're the first one to show up after winter, welcoming in the season, so there's that element of "new"... but grass is so sexy too... especially the thought of rolling around in it and noses getting rubbed into it... it's quite accessible too... maybe grass beats out both ragweed and trees... *sigh*... oh man, I give up, I CANNOT decide!!!!!! I tried, I really, really did... Link to comment
W.I.N.
I'm a fan of feathers, myself. I like the idea of someone being able to control the allergen with a certain degree of precision. ~W.I.N. Link to comment
