PART 1

Mornings were the worst, especially mornings when you woke up with that dull headache, and the pestering itch that plagues you deep within your sinuses. Mornings like that were the worst, especially when you had a first date that evening and new it would only get worse until then. Mornings were the worst.

I forced myself out of bed, scrubbing with my wrist at my already redding nose. Today would be a long day of classes. Turning on the shower I let the steam fill the room, causing that tickle to intensify. Hih...hiiihhh... Nothing. This was going to be a rough cold.

I stumbled out to the car, bundled up in my jacket. The bitter cold air slapped me in the face the minute I opened the door. My nose began to run and sneezes began to build. I serached desperately in my pockets for tissues or something. These would be wet.

Hiih...hiIIhhchiew! hiihh...Hetchiew! I could see the contagion fly towards the ground. Finally I found a tissue in just enough time to catch one more sneeze.

The heat in the car didn’t seem to help warm me up. I looked at my phone. 2 Messages:

Jenna: I’m so looking forward to our date tonight! : )

Luke: Hey man, Emily, dumped me last night.

Crap! Luke must be a mess. Luke and Emily had been dating for 2 in a half years, he had just bought a ring and was planning on proposing. 3 rings and Luke answered groggily.

“What happened.” I drove trying to concentrate on the road and not sneezing while I waited for Luke to explain.

“She said had been thinking for a while, how we weren’t going anywhere and was done waiting. Then she said we were done and left. I don’t get her man! All I know is I love her and want her back!”

“Talk to her. In fact just go propose. It’s better th...hhiahhh...Hih’hitchiew! hihhh’itchiew! sorry. It’s better than losing her right.”

“Yeah... Are you headed to class?”

“Ye...yehitchiew! yeah.”

“Later” I closed my phone and threw it on my seat. I arrived on campus and sat in my car for a few minutes, i closed my eyes and when they opened the dull headache and grown into a throbbing one. I hated mornings especially one’s with colds.

My phone alerted me of a text message. I just wanted to crawl in bed, not talk to people, but I checked it

Jenna: Are you coming to class?

I glanced at the clock 8:10! Crap, I must have dozed off! I jumped out of my car and ran across campus. By the time I reached the door I was out of breath and my head felt like exploding. I felt so weak. I walked in and sat down in the back of the room.

Jenna looked at me odd and turned back around. I buried my head in my face and must have dozed off again, because next thing I new Jenna had her arm on my shoulder and I startled awake.

“You ok, Kade?” Her cool hands felt so good on my cheeks. I looked at her and no matter my answer, she already knew.

“I’m not feeling so great.” And as if to emphasize my nose betrayed me and I sneezed a hard triple into the sleeve of my hoody.

“We should cancel tonight...”

“No, I only have one more class, then I’ll go home, take some medicine and sleep. I’ll be fine by tonight.” I knew she didn’t believe me but at least she played along. One of the reason she’d become my best friend.

“Alright, on another note. I tried to talk Emily into talking more with Luke. She’d said she’d think about it.”

“Hopefully she will.” Jenna left for her next class and I sat in the courtyard freezing while waiting for my next class. It was going to be a long day.

Hope you guys really enjoy it!

I like it. Plus, the guy in the first novel I ever completed is named Kade, so I have a soft spot for Kades.

After barely surviving my next class I couldn’t wait to get home. The winter wind had picked up, snow had already begun falling. Harishiew! Harishiiew! ISCChiew! The sneezes had become so wet and desperate. It felt good to get them out, but now people were staring so I picked up the pace and ran to my car.

I reached the car out of breath and coughing a little. Dang it! I searched my pockets for my keys, but they were missing. I tried thinking back, I must have taken them out of my pockets at some point, but no. I remember, I’d pulled them out of the ignition and held them in my hand and then fallen asleep.

I looked through the window and sure enough they were on the seat. Could this day get any worse!?! At least I had my cell phone. Luke should be getting out of classes soon, maybe he could give me a ride. I called him but he didn’t pick up, so instead of sitting at the school for hours waiting on Jenna to get out of class, I decided to be smart and walk the five miles home.

Hitchiew! harishoo! hih...hihhh...hihtchiew! The longer I walked the more my nose began to run, by the time I got home my cheeks and and nose were cherry red and I was shivering beyond control.

“This has been the worst day ever.” I sighed and drug myself upstairs and started running the shower. The warm water did nothing to stop the chills, but at least it felt good for a short while. I pulled on my favorite sweat pants and hoody and curled back up in bed.

Just when I was about to fall asleep my phone began to ring. Luke.

“Hey man.” Luke said much happier than earlier.

“You and Em talked?” I asked, unfortunately my voice had become a hoarse whisper and I wasn't sure Luke had heard me.

“You sound like crap, Jenna said you were sick. I’m gonna propose tonight. I’m taking her to a really nice restaurant along the beach. She really has no idea. She just thinks I’m trying to make it up to her and we’re talking.” Luke sounded excited, but nervous. “Sorry, I called to return your call not talk about Em.”

“It’s all good. I locked my keys in my car, I was looking for a ride home, but now I’m home. Can you pick me up and drive me back to school. I have the spare now.”

“Sure, no prob. How did you get home?”

“I walked.” I stated point blankly just ready to hang up and go back to sleep.

“You walked home on a day like today sick. Crazy. I’ll be there in five.”

Luke hung up and I pulled my jacket on over my hoody. I grabbed some tissues and tried to blow the increasing congestion out of my nose, but it just came out a gurgle noise and tickles my sinuses even further. I heard Luke knocking at the door. I tried to hold back my sneezes, but the second I opened the door and was assaulted with the cold air, I lost all control. Hitchiew! harishoo! hih...hihhh...hihtchiew! Harishiew! Harishiiew! ISCChiew!

“You look rough.”

“Lets just g...go hitchiew!” I grabbed the spare key and walked behind Luke out the door. I was about to climb in his car when I felt the sneeze building again. hih...hhiiihhh...HIH... Stuck! I rubbed underneath my nose to try and draw it out, but my breath just kept hitching.

I sat down stuck in the pre-sneeze state. My chest rising and falling in a rapid motion. Red nostrils flared, but still no sneeze. The entire five mile care ride back to school, it just wouldn’t come out. Finally the tickle fired up even more and my breathing quickened. I rubbed the bridge of my nose tickling it, trying so hard to coax it out. ICKSHIEW! And the tickle had retreated once again to the back of my nose.

“After all that, one sneeze.” Luke just busted up laughing.

“Shud ub.” I said full of congestion.

Part 3

I drove home and crawled into bed again. Every part of me ached. I never got sick, but when I did it hit hard and fast. Just 5 hours ago it was a simple headache now a full blown cold.

I tried to get some sleep, but the chills were too much and I didn’t have anymore ibuprofen. Turning on the tv I curled up in my blankets even further, but still shivering. As I was starting to doze off once again my phone rang!

“Seriously!” I looked at it and debated picking up or not. Jenna. I couldn’t ignore her. “Hey Jenna.” My voice came out hoarse and I realized for the first time how badly it hurt to talk, or even breathe.

“You walked home from school in this snow storm! Are you crazy? Why didn’t you text me, I would have left class to drive you home?”

“I was too tired to think and besides I didn’t think you would want to just leave class.” I rubbed my temple, the throbbing headache had gotten worse and the need to sneeze much most desperate.

“Well you were wrong. I would have loved to take care of you.” I could her her sigh and then take a deep breath. “How are you feeling?”

“Good, better than earlier.” I lied. I didn’t want her know, she already knew I was weak enough to get sick.

“Really? You sound worse.”

“Really, I s...s-ss-sou...hih...sound w-w...worse th...thanithchiew! than I f-fih...feeitchiew!” I dropped the phone from the force of the last sneeze and quickly tried to grab some tissues, before I was overcome by a fit. itchiew! itschiew! eEtciew! ItchtIOO! I threw the soacked tissues next me on the bed and grabbed more just in time to catch 5 more wet and even harsher sneezes into them. I blew my nose and picked up the phone. my head was throbbing again.

“Bless you, I’m coming over to take care of you. We’re canceling tonight.” I couldn’t argue anymore, and my nose decided to answer for me. itCHIEW! “Bless.”

“Thags.”

“I’ll be there in an hour.” We hung up and I crawled further beneath my covers sneezing ever 5 seconds for what felt like the entire hour, at least there wasn’t any coughing. I must have fallen asleep, because I halfway heard the doorbell and opened the door still in a daze.

“Oh Kade, you look so miserable.” Jenna entered the house. Still in a daze I led her into the living room. I didn’t notice the bag in her hand and until she set in on the table and started pulling out medicines and some movies. “I don’t know what movies you’d like so I brought over a bunch. Everything you need for a perfect sick day on the couch.”

I just smiled and sat down. She put a movie in then sat next to me.

“What are we watching?”

“A Walk to Remember.” She just gave me a goofy smile as I gave her a questioning look. “A chickflick?”

“I figured, you should be sleeping so I wanted to enjoy a movie. Besides its my favorite.” I started to reach for her hand when the blasted urge to sneeze overwhelmed me again. My breath started hitching and my nostrils flaring. The itch burned so bad! For goodness sakes just sneeze already!

hih...hhhiihh...HIH...HITCHIEW! ITCHIEW! ItCHIEW! ITCHIEW! heehh...hetschiew! Rapid fire sneeze finally over took my entire body. My head pulsed and I groped around searching for tissues. “Jen...hehh...tis...ITHICEW! Jenna, tiss...Itchiew! ishiew!”

Jenna handed me some tissues and I blew my nose.

“Bless you by the way. Sounds like you could use some decongestants.” Jenna got off the couch and poured some water and gave me the meds.

“Dhags.” I thanked her just as her phone rang. I zoned out while she was on the phone trying to stay awake.

“Kade...” I snapped back to reality. Jenna looked pale all the sudden.

“Jenna, are you ok?” I stood up and put my hand on her back, she looked worse than I did.

“Kade, that was Emily. Luke’s been in an accident.”

Jenna and I ran into the OR waiting room. Emily sat alone with tear stained cheeks. I staid back as Jenna ran up to Emily and hugged her.

“How is he, Em?” I asked harsher than I meant.

“I don’t know the doctor’s wont tell me anything because I’m not family.” Emily crumbled back into the chair. I ran over to the nurse’s deck.

“I’m looking to the doctor to Luke Dalton, I’m his brother.” The nurse looked at me doubtful, but answered me anyway.

“He’s in surgery right now, as soon as he’s out the doctor will come talk to you. Can I get your name.” She wrote my name down and I went back into the waiting room. Jenna and Emily sat in the corner crying and praying that Luke would pull through.

Jenna left Emily’s side and wrapped her arms around me briefly. “Did you find out anything?”

“No, he’s in surgery, and the doctor will come talk to me when its over.” The adrenaline started to wear off and the reality of everything began to hit me, but now I had to be strong for Emily. I had to stay in check.

Jenna reached up and brushed her hand over his cheek. “Doesn’t seem like any of the meds have helped with your fever. I think it’s higher now.”

“It’s fine.” I walked away from her and sat next to Emily. Jenna brought me a box of tissues and sat down. Hetchiew! Hih...hetchIEW!

In between sneezing and blowing my nose I paced the waiting room floor for hours. As each minute passed I could feel myself starting to lose it, but would look over at Emily and Jenna. Jenna was so strong for Emily and I had to remain strong for them both.

“Kade, please sit down. You’ve been pacing for 6 hours.” Jenna came up next to me and put her hand on the center of my back as she’d done hundreds of times in the last 6 in a half hours.

“Why haven’t they told us anything yet?” I could feel the tears welling up, I closed my eyes and tensed up. Not now!

“I don’t know...” She stayed next to me for a while. Hetchiew! The came out suddenly. I didn’t have time to cover just to turn away from Jenna and sneezed openly at the floor. “I wish you felt better.” Jenna’s own tear streaked face looked exhausted and worn out.

“I’m fine.” I gave her the best smile I could, before erupting into another sneezing fit. The fit ended and as I blew my nose the doctor came out.

“I’m looking for family members of Kade Dalton.”

My heart stopped and I walked up to the doctor. “I’m Kade, his brother.”

“He survived surgery, but it doesn’t look good. There is internal bleeding in his head which is causing pressure on his brain. He’s in a coma right now. Even if he survives the night, it’s not likely he will ever wake up again.”

I need to run, my best friend could not be in a coma. I fought so hard to keep things together

“We found this in his pockets.” The doctor handed me a small velvet box and I broke.

The engagement ring.

I ran out of the waiting room and out of the hospital. I just kept running to where I had no clue. When my body couldn’t run anymore, I’d made it to the park that Luke and I grew up playing at and broke down. Tears ran down my face. If Luke didn’t make it I would go insane.

I fell to my knees and sat in the snow, my body shivered uncontrollably and I sniffled constantly. Hetchiew! Itchiew! Itchiew! The sneezing didn’t help and I rubbed my nose on my sleeve.

I let myself go numb, physically and mentally. My cell phone rang, but I ignored it. I got up and started walking back to the hospital.

When I walked back in the waiting room, Jenna looked so scared. She ran up to me as caught me against her shoulder as my legs collapsed from under me. Emily and Jenna led me back to the seat, and I hated myself for not being strong enough for them.

“Are you okay, Matt?” Emily asked. I grabbed the box out of my pocket and slipped it into her hands.

“He’d want you to hold onto this.” She looked at me with tears once again in her eyes. Jenna held Emily as she cried. The doctor came out again, and my heart stopped. Please, let this be good news.

“Mr. Kade, he’s waking up. I can’t explain it, but the bleeding stopped and the swelling went down. It doesn’t look like there is any brain damage, but we’ll know more when he wakes up. I’ve never seen anything like this.” The doctor looked flabbergasted.

I knew, Emily and Jenna’s prayers had been heard, but I was still in too much shock to respond. Luke was going to be ok.

Hihtchiew! ethciew! itchiew! Now if I could just get rid of this darn cold!
