500 (and one) Handkerchiefs

Well I have done it. I have reached a milestone, today I bought my 501st handkerchief. What a collection. This morning I had 492 hankies, but then received 3 from Ebay, taking me to 495, and I thought, ah, what the hell, I will go and buy 5 more to reach the 500 target. Sadluy though, the only hankies I wanted to buy came in lots of 3, so I had to buy 6, taking me to 501.

I then came home and labouriously counted my handkerchiefs, and after a couple of re-counts, I found that I indeed have 501.

The question I have now though, is shall I stop there?

btw, pics available on my blog, below.

Hi Kleeny,

Why should you? I guess 1000 is a terrific number too

It has to be said: there's so many now I have never used. This puts me off buying more. Still, if I see ones I like, I still go for them.

Keep us posted!

That's quite an accomplishment! Congrats! Where do you keep them all?

Thanks guys, I am quite proud of my collection.

No. I don't want to stop, and in fact have ordered handkerchiefs 502 amd 503 from Ebay already. hehe. I think I should get to 1000!

AnonyMouse, I keep them in a chest of drawers, all the mens hankies anyway. I have about 88 ladies hankies which I keep in a small box.

Congratulations ! 500 sounds nice.

Question: how many of them do you use on a regular basis ?

C

Hi Countless

I have developed a system so that most of them get used. I used a clean handkerchief everyday, one for my work trousers and one for my jeans. The previous days' handkerchief goes in the laundry and once they're washed and ironed, the ones I have used will be put to one side, and not put back in my hankie drawer, so that I then use all the others.

I really enjoy selecting a hankie everyday. The clean used ones will be put in a pile, which I enjoy seeing in my bedroom, but then have the occasional feeling of "Good Lord, just how many hankies do I need???""

What a great thing to collect! I have quite a fondness for hankies...growing up, my mom did all the laundry in our house but somehow I ended up with hankie duty. I was so diligent about washing, drying, ironing and folding my dad's hankies. I took pride in making sure my dad had a nice, fresh hankie every day.

I will be watching this thread closely...can't wait to read about your progress!

I think it's cool that you had an early introduction to handkerchiefs, ironing them and making them nice.

Did this develop into you using them, or suggesting to others that they should use a hankie?

Oh Lord yes. I have no idea how much I have spent on hankies but this is a collection built up over about 15 years, most of them were bought in packs of 5 or 7, so that saved money. I am glad I haven't kept count because it would make me stop collecting hankies.

I can't say that I've used them myself, but I'm a bit anachronistic and I love traditions and customs of days gone by. I think it's just classy carrying/using handkerchiefs. And who knows? Maybe being on this forum will make a hanky user out of me!

I lost my dad a few years ago...and I only managed to get one hanky from his collection. It was the only one I could find but it was one I gave to him (it says "Dad") :)

Thanks for the memories this week, Kleeny! I'm gonna be here for the Quest for 1000!

You're more than welcome, about the memories, and I shall keep you updated on my quest, although it might take me another 15 years or so.
