The question on Leslies math test was: how do you know without solving that the square root of three divisible by the square root of 18? The question on her mind was: how many puppies will Molly have? She knew she had to concentrate on her test, but knowing that her beloved Molly was due with puppies in less then a week, made it impossible to focus on just about anything except ways to pamper her dog.

"Leslie Pays, why have you not completed half of your math test?" the teacher's authoritative voice made her jump.

"Umm . . . because . . . because . . ." how humiliating! She sniffled.

"You will be given 50% credit on the problems you complete at Saturday school" the teacher moved on to the next pupil. Ugh, now what? Leslie thought. The lunch bell rang, reminding Leslie just how much she hated being a senior in high school. The seniors were served their food last of all the 3 grades. Most of the kids (like Leslie) were starving when they got top head down to the commons to collect their skimpy portions from Grumpy Mrs. Grundy, the lunch lady. Leslie had her own problems aside from starving to death in a child friendly place, or failing a test. She had no friends, or so she thought. Yeah, the gym teacher liked her all right, but what was that worth? She had no family, (her mother and father had died in a car crash) and lived with her uncle, who gave her the notion that living off the streets would be much better. He did heroin, drunk, smoked, and a variety of other gross stuff. A tray of disgusting looking ham sandwich got thrust into her hands interrupting her train of thought. "Would you just hurry up?" Mrs. Grundy snapped, "The world doesn't revolve around you, dear!" 5-0-6-2. Click, went the money machine, and off went Leslie, to the table where nobody but herself sat.

Leslie looked out the window for a moment, and then snapped her head back when the people around her started laughing. Her sandwich was strewn all over her tray, along with a note. 'Will you go to the prom with me Leslie? Just say it aloud. Adam Hobson' who just happened to be the boy she had been looking at since day 1! "That’s an odd way to deliver a message, but sure." Then he was sitting next to her. Her own personal miracle. Direct from heaven. Wow. "Really?" he asked on a deep voice "you're not screwing with me?"

"Heck no! I've had a crush on you since 8th grade!" she leaned up and pecked him on the cheek, blushing violently.

"Super cool" he commented grinning, and some of the other kids started clapping.

When the hubbub had died down, and lunch could be resumed, Adam offered her strawberry laffy taffy. "How'd you know those were my favorite candy?" Leslie asked.

"Just so happens that their my favorite, too" he unveiled a second piece for himself.

"Hmm" He was so handsome. And she'd always enjoyed the notion of her and a black guy. Now it was real.

Then of course the bell decided to ring, calling them to their third classes of the day. Wow, Leslie, thought did that really just happen.?

Good so far! I'm assuming there will be sneezes in the next part?

I totally relate at the beginning, math SUCKED in high school. (It sucks now in college too, but since math isn't very relevant to my major I don't have to take it :cryhappy:) She's so cute getting all excited about her dog's puppies too. B)

part 2-

"Hi uncle!" Leslie called as she waltzed through the door. No answer.

"HELLO, UNCLE" . . ..

"Bug off, you!" that was the usual. Today, Leslie was riding just high enough on cloud nine that for once it didn't bother her. She sneezed and went along the corridor to her room, where she knew molly would be waiting for her, though today there were no eager paws making scratching noises on the door to greet her. Leslie had become well accustomed to molly's schedule, when she was awake, sleeping, playful, grouchy ect. When Leslie got home from school was one of molly's playful times. Leslie opened the door and gasped. Molly was gone! There was nowhere she could hide! And, there was a hole in her window screen just big enough for molly to jump through. "Oh no" she murmured to herself. She couldn't go find molly alone! Uncle sure wouldn't help . . . Adam! She had told him all about molly on the bus ride home, and he had given her his cell number. She whipped out her own phone and dialed, making a mental note to put him in her speed dial. "Adam?" she asked when he answered, his deep voice just could not calm her as it usually would, she was far too panicked. "Yeah, hey Leslie what's up?"

"Molly's gone!"

There was a short pause "where is she?"

"I don't know she jumped through my window screen."

"Well let's go find her! It'll be the best first date in history! I know this place in dallert alley where we can spend the night if it comes to that. Pack and meet me at the teen center in 10, okay?"

"Yeah ok bye."

Leslie was a tornado, yanking out her drawers, raiding her closet for anything she might need to take care of a golden retriever and her un- or newborn puppies.

10 minutes later, outside the local teen center, Leslie and Adam were waiting for the clouds overhead to clear. Leslie hated awkward silences, and said "do your parents know where you are?" thinking of a happy family, one who actually cared about what happened to each other, brought tears to her eyes, and she tried, very unsuccessfully to hide them from Adam. "What's wrong sweetie?" he drew her near and she hugged him back "molly is going to be just fine, dogs have been doing this forever without mans help. It'll be just fine" Leslie took a shaky breath "it not that, I know molly's probably ok, it's . . ." she sobbed quietly. "I'm an orphan. I miss them." There she'd said it. She wiped her eyes harshly, sniffled and pulled away. "There, it looks clearer now" she said even though it didn't. She sneezed into her arm twice, hoping she wasn't catching a cold. ''All right, if you say so babe" Adam followed her, considering that she must really like him if she told him this on their first day together. They headed for a cluster of dark alleys with multiple hiding places for a dog, even a large pregnant one. Leslie suddenly turned around and said hesitantly "I'm sorry I freaked out on you there, it was the wrong question for me to ask, I'm so sorry," she sniffled again, considering strongly trying to make her point even more. He interrupted her, saying "babe it's fine I'd expect more of a reaction from any old boy of the streets. And I'm sorry, that they died. " She smiled wearily at him then said, "you set up for the night, I'll meet you there after I look for a while" she sneezed again. Please don't let me get sick now.

it gets better, stay tuned!
