So am I just weird?

Earlier I made a topic asking whether or not

you have ever been able to resist the urge to sneeze from will. I assumed that this ability was very rare if it existed at all. Turns out from the responses I got, this actually seems

to be the norm. O_o. Which leads me to my question. How many people are like me? For me, sure, I can stifle or pinch or rub my nose to make the feeling go away, but as far as having to sneeze and choosing to let it happen or not there is absolutly no such thing. For me it's 100% involuntary reflex. When that nerve is tickled, my body just does it's own thing. There's no letting it happen or not, it just.... Does.

personally, I'd love to have this ability, I absolutly HATE sneezing in public. Also, although I understand that it's possible that my body is just wired differently, if you DO have this ability, any tips? Haha

I can't control when I sneeze either. I mean, sometimes the tickly feeling doesn't amount to anything, but I don't think I have much control over that. I was also surprised by your thread because I also assumed other people were the same. Oh well * dysfunctional five* :lamo:

I think you're the normal ones. I believe some of us has taken "mental block" to an absurd (and honestly physically impossible) level. Well... faith can move mountains, obviously. :lamo:

Being unable to control one's sneeze reflex is not weird.

It's sexy. X)

Well for me it isn't just the power of my braaainnzz (I wish). I don't have to touch/rub anything though. I just stop breathing for a moment and tense up (it's kind of the way your tongue/throat/etc is positioned mid-swallow) and then it goes away 95% of the time. I can sneeze silently 3% of that 5% failure rate (just pulling numbers out my youknowwhere :lamo:).

Maybe it has something to do with the speed? From the -uhg- utterly unpleasant conversation about sneeze/coughing I've had with my family (they started it, of course, I just wanted to put my hands over my ears and run away) they said something like, "It's just so fast I don't even realize it's coming and I can't stop it!". Like a surprise? That to me is news because I can always tell it's coming, thus I'm able to stop it.

Is it really so sudden for others??

Link to comment

Tis not sudden for me. There is usually a fairly long period of "I think I might sneeze sometime in the near future...yup, I definitely will...wait, no, it went away...oh, right, now I'm going to sneeze, probably." And it can be silent(ish) if I try, like just a "hep- "

i dont know... i think you're normal.

i, on the other hand, am not. i think i have some kind of a serious mental block, i havent sneezed in close to 2 months now ;)

everytime i felt a sneeze coming, it'd just stop in the middle of the process right when i was about to sneeze and i wouldnt be able to complete it, and now even tickles dont produce anything, mainly because my brain is now set on the fact that i'm not gonna sneeze anyway, no matter how big the tickles is, due to past experiences with my aborted sneezes hahaha... i think that's the case anyway.

i really dont know how to get rid of it. but yes, i think the mind plays a big role in this process. whether you're aware of it or not.

I can't all the time but when I do holding my breath normally works. LOL..If you don't have air you can't do the release.

It's all sexy. Great topic! I don't feel like I can do anything about my sneezes. I can barely stifle them.

I can never stop anything, even if I have advance notice!

The itches just do NOT go away until I sneeze, and when I finally do I have a zero-ability-to-stifle. I have tried clamping my nose, clamping my mouth, and even muffling into a pillow (which was probably not a good idea!).

Weell... I don't know, I'm one who can control my sneezes... I really wonder which is more common amongst all the people on earth, controlling or not controlling...

I discussed this thing with my ex-gf sometime ago at one friends birthday parties. She's definitely not one of us and not one with any kind of mental block but she surely can control her sneezing (we both belive she has Tourette's and this kinda came up while talking about that)... She's the pretties person ever to exist... *leaves before she writes a novel of that girl*

I've found that I can sorta stifle sneezes if I tense up my upper throat muscles the right way?... god, that sounds weird. But I'd never risk doing that in public, though! If I can't make the tickling go away by not breathing or pressing my tongue to the roof of my mouth, and I know it's building up to a sneeze, I rub or press my nose with my hand as subtly as possible. Or if nobody's within immediate eyesight I'll pinch my nose shut. Nobody's getting out that way!

But as far as mental stifling goes... I can't control that, though my disappearing (:disgust:) mental block every once in a while still kicks in when I'm alone.

PS- I don't think that anybody's stifling ability or lack thereof is weird! We're all at different places with this whole fetish thing. Just do your best to take it where you want it. I never thought I'd get over my mental block, but I'm doing pretty well.

so do you choose to let it out or not? or are you like me where when you get that feeling, its 100% uncontrolled reflex.

so for you a sneeze is more like a cough? its more like a struggle to give into the reflex or not?

that is sooo alien to me!

Are you able to maintain the itch level and hold off the march toward the sneeze?

i can have this annoying tickle for days, but it wont build up to a sneeze

how did you manage to get over yours? any advice? B)

I assume you've tried inducing

I don't know how others have gotten over their mental blocks, but as for me, I tried inducing as well as not stifling when alone. The first few times I induced, it took me forever to sneeze. And they were disappointing sneezes, at that. But I'm guessing the "practice" helped.

And when alone, I just tried not to focus too hard on a coming sneeze, but at the same time kinda stopped what I was doing to wait for it. I don't know; over time they just... felt more comfy showing themselves!

PS- Oh, and if a tickle goes away before it can develop into a sneeze, try inducing then, but super-gently. Like, use a q-tip to tickle in the exact spot where the tickle had been. I think it comes out more naturally that way. :D

inducing doesnt help either... earlier i could induce with no problem, but now... nothing :D

guess my mental block is really strong :D

Something like that. I'd say a cough might sometimes be a bit harder to hold in than a sneeze... xD

now when you say hold in do you mean stiffle or silmply decide against letting the process start.

I think I'm like those who can stop the sneeze through willpower - but it depends on the sneeze, some I think are stoppable, others not. I can't say for sure though because I like sneezing so much I never try to stop a sneeze, wherever I am. If I'm in a meeting, I make sure I can sneeze into something and not make much noise, but it's frustrating for me not to sneeze when I feel like it.
