Spicy Food

Went to dinner with some friends last night: Thai food. Yum! Last time I had Thai I ordered medium spice and it wasn't hot enough so this time I ordered hot. My Pad Thai was amazing--seriously so freaking good. About half way through the meal though I really started feeling the spice (I don't know what spice, just hot stuff) in my nose and throat. As our meal was winding down my nose was really starting to burn. I had a cloth napkin and brought it up to discreetly wipe my nose. I didn't want to blow my nose at the table but I was afraid if I went to the bathroom I'd miss something good in conversation. I sniffed a couple times and rubbed my nose against the back of my hand. The friend who was sitting across from me said,

"Regretting going with the hot Pad Thai?"

"No. It was good, just making my nose run a little." About five minutes later I had to turn to the side and sneezed into my napkin. HahhehShoo!! A pretty distinct, three syllable sneeze with the emphasis on the "shoo." A couple of my friends blessed my and I thanked them.

Later, when our checks arrived, I had to sneeze a double. HahhehhSHOO!! EhhSHOO!!

"Bless you!" my friend said like she was kind of surprised.

HahhehhSHOOO!!!

"Bless you. Are you okay?" she asked. Thankfully, most of the rest of the table seemed uninterested. I rubbed my nose with the palm of my hand. It was so itchy.

"I'm fine. It's just the spicy food. I can still feel it in my nose and my throat." HahhehhSHOO!!

"Bless you again. You want some of my iced tea?" I thought that was kind of sweet but a little confusing since I already had water and I wasn't sure how tea would be different.

HahhEHHSHOOO!!! That last sneeze was really satisfying.

"Okay, I'm done now," I said. "Promise."

So, more spicy food from now on I think.

Yummy Thai food...yummy sneezes; I take it you'll be hanging around the kitchen door seeking out the sneezy spices.

If only one could find a reliable source of sneeziness! [runniness not such a problem...]

I've never had this reaction from spicy food, nor have I ever seen or heard of anyone having this reaction outside of the forum, either. Maybe we're just not eating spicy enough?

Oh my word- that's a lovely obs! For some reason I find spicy food a particularly nice sneeze-causing factor in an observation.

I've never had this reaction from spicy food, nor have I ever seen or heard of anyone having this reaction outside of the forum, either. Maybe we're just not eating spicy enough?

It's got to be some kind of spice specific to Thai (but not curry because I eat tons of that without issue). I eat spicy food all the time and I often get a runny nose but this is the first time I've ever sneezed like that.
