my new-ish allergies

So. It's been about a million and one years since I've written an obs, so I apologize if this isn't very good.

In the last year or so I've developed mild seasonal allergies that seem to act up a bit mostly during July/September (I started noticing a bit of itchiness last summer in August). At first I was quite annoyed by this, as they mostly just made my nose itchy at points and didn't result in much sneezing. That appears to have changed this year! These days they are still mild, but there's more sneezing, as well as a bit of congestion (mostly in the morning), and an occasional itchy nose. Medication is not necessary for me, although I do occasionally use natural remedies to reduce my symptoms.

I've had a couple of memorable fits so far. One morning, my nose felt especially itchy for a while after waking. As was sitting on the couch, I furiously rubbed my nose as I realized that I hadn't taken my natural remedies in a few days. Before I could do anything about it, however, I began to sneeze. “Hat’CHOO! Ah…ah…AT’CHOO!” I sneezed uncovered, as I was not carrying a handkerchief at the time, and I didn't have a box of tissues nearby. I assumed that was the end of my sneezing for a bit, as I usually only sneeze in singles (or sometimes doubles if I have a cold or allergies acting up). But I could still feel the tingling in my nose, and after about a 10 second gap, my breath began to hitch again. I sat there for a moment with what was probably the dumbest looking pre-sneeze expression ever. “Ah…Ahhh…ahhh? Ahhh…AHH…CHOO! Sniff, sniff." I rubbed my nose, which was now congested, and ran to my room in case there were any more sneezes. There was, but it was stuck, and I looked out my window at the streaming morning sun to coax it out. “Heh…Hehhh…Heh-CHEWW!! Sniff, sniff!” That last sneeze was the most forceful yet, and I mad my way over to the box of tissues by my bed. I grabbed a tissue, but it failed to reach my nose in time, and the final sneeze also went uncovered. It was slightly wet, too. “Haaa…HAH-CHHUHHH!!” That felt like the end of the fit, so I blew my nose loudly to ease the congestion.

Another nice fit happened a few days after that. I was taking a shower in the late morning, when my nose began to feel itchy. This is not abnormal for me, as during allergy season I often sneeze at least once while I'm in the shower. I'm not sure why exactly - could be the dampness, or the change in temperature, or there could be a bit of mold in there aggravating my allergies. At any rate, the sneezes started coming, about five seconds apart. “Ah-chew!…Ashoo!…Ah…ha…Ha-SCHOO!” Three in a row! But I could tell that wasn't all. My nose was now even itchier than before, if such a thing was possible. I rubbed my nose, and then my eyes, unsure if they were itchy from water or if my eyes were also feeling allergy symptoms. I began to mutter under my breath. "Ugggh, stupid all…ha…aller…ha…gies…HA-CHOO!” I snuffled and rubbed my nose yet again. “HUH-SHOO!” Now I was starting to get worried if someone else in the house was overhearing all my sneezing, so I decided to try and stifle the last sneeze. “Ha-gnk!” It was still pretty loud for a stifle, but that was the end of it. I washed my hair, and before I got out of the shower, I blew my nose on my used washcloth.

Hope you all enjoyed.

Nice obs - thanks for sharing. Its curious how allergies can just develop at any time during your life - I wonder what it is that changes to make this happen? Anyone know? :D

*raises hand* Oooh, I know!

It's simply how our immune system functions to respond to certain allergens. Allergies to pollen, mold, grasses, etc. are considered to be a type I hypersensitivity reaction. Type I hypersensitivity reactions occur in two phases - the first phase is induction, the second is elicitation. The induction phase is basically our exposure to a potential allergen - at any given time in our lives, our bodies can decide to produce antibodies to a particular allergen. Subsequently, when you encounter that allergen, you will have an immune response (the elicitation phase).

I'm happy to say that I actually remembered that from medical school. My tiny little peabrain is AMAZING.

ETA: Oh, and lovely obs! :D Thank you for sharing.

Cheers Nicole :D I've always wondered and...now I know

Hi! :D Just wanted to say how much I liked your post. And also, I'm worried about what'll happen to me in year from now! I feel like I'm also developing mild allergies. I can mostly deal with them now, and I only have to take pills on the worst days. But I shudder to think of what next year will be like! I hope you keep us all posted. Maybe it'll give me something to compare myself to so I know if this mess is all in my head or not. :)
