First Classroom Sneeze of the School Year

While I am no stranger to sneezing in front of my classes, it is ALWAYS uncomfortable, especially the first time it happens. Today was my first (sort of), second and third classroom sneeze of the school year…

So far I have been lucky enough that my sneezes during the school day have fallen during my lunch, planning period, or in between classes. Today was only day 3 with students and already my luck has run out.

I woke up this morning feeling slightly more sneezy than usual. I sneezed a couple times getting ready for work and twice on my drive in. Little did I know that the quantity of my morning sneezes was foreshadowing the classroom sneezes to come.

Usually when I am with students I am able to fight off the urge to sneeze, at least until group work is being done and the volume in the classroom increases (and not all eyes are on me). During third period I felt a tickle in my nose start to build. There was less than 5 minutes left of class so I felt as though I would be able to suppress the sneeze until the kids cleared. I kept rubbing my nose and pinching it, waiting for the bell to ring. I knew that if I could only hold on I would have my 4th period planning to sneeze all I needed. Finally, the bell rang. As the kids were packing up and heading out I yelled after them, “Have a great rest of your day!” That was just enough for me to stop my concentration of stopping the sneeze. Seconds later I turned away, cupped my hands around my nose and mouth and bent at the waist with a wet, “Huh … Hih ISHooo!” Thank god most of the kids had already moved on to their next class, but three of the five remaining students blessed me as they were walking out.

My nose behaved itself for most of the rest of the day. One sneeze during my 5th period lunch, but that seemed to be it until the final period of the day … 8th period. Now this is a class of freshman. This is the age group I feel most uncomfortable sneezing around because they are furthest away from my own age. The only advantage was that this is my smallest class of only 14 students. I was sitting on top of one of the desks and we as a class were having a conversation about analyzing graphs (fun stuff!) With almost no warning I felt a sneeze creep up that I knew I would be unable to stop. While one of my students was talking I dropped my mouth, turned to the side and shielded my mouth and nose with my hand ( although I did not completely cover … not sure why) As I said, I had nearly no warning, or build up for that matter which is unusual for me, and I let out a quick, “HIHESHHiieww!” What seemed like the entire class then blessed me. It was mortifying. I turned back to thank them, but soon realized I wasn’t done. I held up my left index finger and turned to my right. My mouth hung open like an idiot for what seemed like FOREVER, but in reality was probably less than 15 seconds. My breath began to hitch with my finger still up. Finally, the sneeze came. I pulled both hands to my face and bent forward with a loud and way too girly “Hih EsshhiiOOO!” I sniffed a couple times, thanked the second round of blessings and had to get a tissue to blow my nose. I was absolutely humiliated.

Since I left school I have sneezed several times, none of which were as horrifying as the three in front of students. Even though the first sneeze of the year is over it never gets easier. Hopefully tomorrow will be sneeze and embarrassment free …

Thanks for being brave enough to share! I understand why you would find that uncomfortable but hope you don't mind me saying I wouldn't have minded being in that class! Of course, I'd be just a tad old, lol.

Take care and bless you,

Zed

Aww, Lalena! I'm sorry you're embarrassed by that  I know if I'm ever a high school teacher, I wouldn't want to sneeze in front of my students either. But on the flip side, having an attractive teacher sneeze in class is always a plus in my book :(

Well, bless you! And great obs, thanks for sharing :)

Ladies and Gentleman, we have a bona fide contender for "observation of the year"! Ok, i made up that category but (although I feel for you in that embarrassing situation Lalena) that was SUPERBLY described, I could visualise each situation so clearly. Thank you!

Bless you Lalena!

(.....pause for you to respond......)

You're welcome

:D

Awww, poor thing!! I'm sorry you had that wonderfully hot moment (that holding up the index finger thing is my favorite) in front of students. Bless you!

Awe! Thanks so much everyone. I will more than happy to include all of you in my class, reguarless of age :D

Even while it was happening I was thinking to myself, this is torture, but at least it should make for an entertaining observation! I'm glad you liked it! As of right now, I don't think I am getting a cold. Fall allergies maybe? But I dreading the possibility of a cold. I usually do get one at the very start of the school year (disgusting germs) however, so far so good in that department.

Thanks for all the blessings! Hugs for all!!! :)

Ohhh, that was lovely! I agree with Joal, that was just an all-around superbly-written obs. And sexy, too. :zippy2:

Bless you! Thanks for sharing, darling.

Yes, what she said!

Thanks for sharing, I am especially fond of the last sneeze, how long it took, and you holding a finger up in the air. Simply marvelous! Sorry if you were embarrassed but I LOVED this!

I held up my left index finger and turned to my right... My breath began to hitch with my finger still up.

Just like the regular people we make observations of.

But really, what I'd like to do is sit in your classroom and light one of your sneezy candles. :)
