Sneezing while hiding.

I've always found the popularity of this scenario intriguing because it's something that never occurred to me before joining the community. If anything, I think I actually tend to find it a turn off, at least in stories, though I'm not really sure why.

I feel the same way, and I'm really not sure why either. It's not like I think it's the most horrible thing in the world, but it's not particularly appealing, and I tend to avoid fic that revolves around that. I think maybe it's because they tend to focus more on the fear of discovery than on the cause of the sneezing, which is pretty important to me. The fear of discovery tends to be related to action-genre type things, which don't really do it for me, fetish or not.

I think it is very cute when it fits into the tone of the piece. I remember always hoping for a sneeze giveaway whenever I read about characters hiding, when I was little. This did occur in one of the Magic Treehouse books, the western-themed one. Jack is hiding in a barrel and the dust makes him sneeze. The best is in the Hobbit, when Bilbo gets chilled after falling in the river and can't stop sneezing. So cute. :)

I think you're on to something with the feeling that the focus of most sneezing while hiding fics is more on the hiding and being found out than they are about the cause and details of the sneezing.

I'm also somewhat inclined to say, though I'm a little afraid that it's going to come off sounding insulting that the sneezing while hiding concept (or perhaps really just being found out while hiding in general) is something I associate with children's stories and so it automatically strikes me as completely un-erotic. I hope that doesn't sound like I'm calling it a childish scenario to enjoy, I think it's probably more of an association thing on my part than anything else.

They tend to feature long, drawn-out build-ups, false starts etc, which for me is probably the main reason I like the concept. And with that other scenario's that feature trying not to sneeze. :P

I'm with you guys on this. I don't necessarily find it a turn off, but I am completely indifferent to the scenario.

Who can doubt that SwH is the very acme of the sneezing scenario. And it can be reversed to give the sneezer the advantage, as I have indicated in several fics [except of course they're so difficult to get access to now].

I certainly enjoyed them from an early age, and they are indeed so prominent in children's stories, unnecessarily so it would seem, that I sometimes wonder if they are some sort of genetic inheritance giving an evolutionary advantage to those who are good at holding back....

Absolutely! As a kid, I visited a relative in the summer. There was a very attractive girl living next door. One time we played some kind of game, either superhero stuff or spy stuff. She was letting me run the story, so we did the whole set-up, just like a TV show. Early on, she "sneezed" several times around a certain flower to establish the allergy in the storyline. Once we started spying on the bad guys, of course we were near bushes with the dreaded flower. She actually let me put my finger under her nose twice to successfully stop the "sneeze." I didn't want to tempt fate too much, so I had her "sneeze" the third time with my finger under her nose. I really don't remember anything else about the game....

Ironically, I don't ever remember seeing her actually sneeze. Maybe that's what led to the game in the first place..... :)

I guess I'm kind of impartial to it... I find it mostly happens in cartoons and things, which I find I have to be in a very specific mood to be into, and even then, it more It depends on weather the sneeze itself is exaggerated or not.
