doggo
And I just saw a pic of my niece dressed up as the most adorable little witch ever, and went "oooh! Easter-witch", without that ringing any bells. Yup, pagan culture. Link to comment
VoOs
Yup, pagan culture.Gotta love how we made Christmas here about the tomte, and Easter about witches. Well, at first it was others trying to make our Yule into their Christmas, of course, so we ended up with a little bit of both. Instead of celebrating Easter, I'd be down for some spring blóting, now when I think about it. The Norse pagan traditions always felt closer to my heart, even if I'm not religious in any way. I could sacrifice some fresh foods for Frey and Freya under a budding birch somewhere, asking them for a warm, sunny, windy spring. Yeah, I'd like that. :> Edited April 14, 2014 by VoOs Link to comment
Jorm
One of the things I've always loved about the Scandinavian countries is that you seem to have managed to resist full on Christianization more than any other European countries. Or at least integrate more of your indigenous religion into Christianity and turn it into something slightly different. *wannabe Scandinavian* Link to comment
doggo
I especially love the Easter tradition that involves talking some birch branches, keeping them in water long enough for them to sprout tiny leaves, and attaching a bunch of feathers to them, resulting int he sneeziest looking objects ever. March Hare
What does that even MEAN, an "official state book"?! Link to comment
count tiszula
Well, for those of us born in happier climes where the holy and indissoluble unity of church and state has given rise to an established church the concept is quite normal. The crown has from time to time decreed that certain books are those to be read in churches and elsewhere, and currently the King James Bible and the 1663 Book of Common Prayer are the main ones. You lot will be pleased to know however that in reality it is now virtually impossible to find anywhere where these crown books may be heard, not even in historical dramas where obviously they would have been. Was there not a similar set=up in protestant Europe? One would expect that Lutheranism would have this status amongst the Swedes and Swedish-speaking Finns. Dutch religious history is beyond me, but the Oranges were pretty authoritarian Calvinist.I have an interesting idea for a new Easter egg game, but as it involves the slaughter of many holy animals, I feel I should not reveal it here. zneeze
Meanwhile in the southern United States: http://time.com/6175...ble-state-book/Not surprising to me - Louisiana is the only state to be divided into parishes rather than counties. But still, are there other states with state books? I'm Christian and generally conservative, but this seems too much like blurring the lines between church and state. They should just make the state book The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. Link to comment

Jorm
Yeah, we gathered that it was a bible quote, it was the WHY we weren't sure about.A thread titled "religion" containing a single bible verse does exactly give us a whole lot to go on, you know? Link to comment

I just thought it would show how different America, mainly the south, and European countries are. I'm pretty sure the south is a completely different world than the rest of the country.
