So, I decided to do a survey on Omegle...

Out of curiosity, as well as my own personal guilt, I went on Omegle for a few hours and used the "question" feature to ask the following: does sneezing feel good to you, and, why/why not? Then I took a tally of what answers I got on Word.

It was hardly a formal survey, but it was still really interesting to see the results, and I was honest-to-goodness shocked by how positive they leaned!

Does it feel good to sneeze?

Yes: 32

Sometimes: 7

Inconclusive/Joke Answer: 8

No: 11

Even more intriguing were some of the reasons I got for either answer, which I also recorded (and fixed some of the typos in, but otherwise these are exactly as the anonymous strangers typed them). I did not make any of these up, I swear on Walt Disney's grave.

- "It gets all the annoying things out of your nose"

- "It's like a release"

- "Cuz it's like your whole body relaxes"

- "I actually make myself sneeze sometimes. I just lightly touch the inside of my nose with my glasses. Sneeze. It's like a really great feeling."

- "1/8th of an orgasm, look it up" (I got 2 or 3 more of these comparisons)

- "it makes me feel alive"

- "ohhhh yes. so satisfying.

- "Yeah I get pissed when I think I am getting one then I don't it's fucking annoying"

- "better than holding it in at least"

- "It's more of a circumstantial thing..Like..I feel good AFTER I sneeze Because I got it out"

- "It's more of a relief than a 'good' feeling"

- "I don't really care if I sneeze or not."

- "Eh. The aftermath feels good. Don't feel that tickling anymore. But that relief after is what I like, not the actual sneeze."

- "its get rid off all shit in my head" (never said yes or no)

Reasons why not:

- "It hurts my throat sometimes"

- "means i have allergies and it sometimes hurts my nose"

- "Because it interrupts what I'm doing" (the person then started talking about how annoying it is when it happens in class, in assemblies, and "when everyone's quiet")

- "It actually hurts"

The thing is...I'm a person who absolutely hates the idea of anyone being hurt or even annoyed, especially people I love...so one of my favourite things about sneezing has always been the idea that it gives the sneezer a sense of relief, satisfaction, or otherwise makes them feel good.

So reading that a lot of people do feel that way was nice. ^v^;;

I feel really terrible for the people for which sneezing hurts, though...

I'm always surprised (and at the same time, not surprised) by the percentage of people who like how it feels to sneeze. It makes me think the fetish isn't so bizarre after all, if so many "normal" people think sneezing feels good. It isn't that much of a stretch that something would get messed up in our brains to make us see it as something sexual.

It's funny how certain things feel good because they are evolutionarily beneficial, thus encouraging a species to continue engaging in that behavior (like sex). Sneezing feels good to most people but it's not something we can control in most cases whether we like it or not, so it's a bit of an evolutionary paradox. I wonder if one point sneezing was "optional" so it needed to feel good in order for us to keep doing it and reaping the benefits that come with it (like clearing out the nose, etc.)

Interesting survey!

I've heard people a few times in the past comment on how a sneeze felt good- comments like "Don't you just love sneezing?" or "That was a good sneeze." So I assumed that a lot of people get some pleasure from the intense feeling of the sneeze, and the relief afterwards. However I'm still pleasantly surprised at just how many voted for 'yes'.

Interesting idea... but I don't really think sneezing is an evolutionary paradox. As you say, we have no control over it.

For example, if your bladder is very full, some people might say there is a slight pleasure to the relief when you finally are able to pee. I don't think you could say that's an evolutionary thing to keep us urinating, because ultimately your body will need to do that, whether you like it or not.

I think you might have a point though, in that sneezing is something that a healthy person naturally does (we don't just sneeze when we have are sick) so it makes sense that it is not usually unpleasant.

Edit: Sorry Anonymouse- now I read my reply back I see I misunderstood what you wrote. I guess it is possible that it was in some way 'optional' at one point- and coughing is both optional and involuntary, in a way. I certainly don't know how evolution of bodily functions works (if anyone does).

I got a few more people on the positive side mentioning "it's relieving" as well as a few more saying no because "it hurts". Here are some other interesting responses from Round 2. A lot of the negative people were more vocal this time around (whereas a lot of the positive just straight up said "Yes" and left).
