Get out of my brain, pig. I was >this< close to starting a thread just like this one earlier, but then I held myself back. I was totally going to go for Marx quotes as well, like:

"Religion is the opiate of the masses."

...because I'm subtle like that.

VoOs, I love the passage that quote is from - the short bit is used so often by atheists as a blunt tool against religious folks, but the context it's from is one of the most beautiful and wise pieces of writing I've encountered. I'll quote:

Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.

Not only describing so well the suffering human being - but I think that Marx is here also describing something that religion and art share. Producing a piece of unreality, denying reality on one hand, while that piece being a very truthful expression of that very reality at the same time. I think this is at the heart of what fiction is about.

I've become to the conclusion, that if someone says/writes something really, really smart, they are probably basing it on something from Marx.
