sleepin sig Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Hi y'all,I don't post much (mostly a lurker), but I have a question for you guys.I just ordered some chhinkni and it came today in the mail. It got such rave reviews from the forum that I had to try it. It definitely works. I only took a tiny bit and sneezed maybe 6 or 7 times. However, being the hypochondriac that I am, I started wondering if it was safe. I was looking up the ingredients and noticed that it has camphor in it, which is poisonous (in large doses) and is recommended not to be taken orally. Granted, I know that there's a very small amount of camphor in it (126mg per bottle i believe), but I'm still paranoid.Has it made anyone feel weird or sick after? Am I being overly concerned?? I want to take it again, but I'm nervous...
sleepin sig Posted May 16, 2014 Author Posted May 16, 2014 Also apparently it's very dangerous if swallowed...I got nervous because I don't usually sniff things up my nose, and I feel like I may have swallowed some after sniffing it. I know I'm going on hypochondriac mode here.http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-and-supplements/camphor-uses-amd-risks
Kiwifruit Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 Camphor is in a number of pharmaceutical nasal sprays, for what it's worth I work in a pharmacy and today I was date checking stock and noticed one nasal inhaler had menthol, eucalyptus and camphor...I resisted the temptation to buy it, crack it open and stick some up my nose xD
cprlaw08 Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 im on my 4th bottle over a period of several months and no ill effects whatso ever
Ouro Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Camphor is only dangerous if actually ingested, so unless your eating the Chhikini you should be perfectly fine. Like Kiwi said, lots of nasal inhalers for easing congestion have camphor in them, breathing it isn't a problem. And the amount that you might swallow by having it go down the back of your throat from your nose would be way to small to cause problems, so I wouldn't worry about it.
criticalsec Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 Water is fatally toxic in high doses. I have, in all sincerity, actually overdose on water to the point of hospitalization once. Dangerous stuff for the body. The message here is obviously to either be way more careful, or to relax. Now I'm not sure which it is.
Kiwifruit Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 ^ "Everything in moderation" is probably a fitting message?
rodakemopetojoen Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 Does anyone know if it somehow makes you sneeze more than usual, that is, when you're not actually using it? Kind of like when people say that if you sniff other 'substances' it makes you a more frequent sneezer? I'm wondering, as one of those people who is embarrassed to sneeze in public...
zneeze Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 I work in a pharmacy and today I was date checking stock and noticed one nasal inhaler had menthol, eucalyptus and camphor...I resisted the temptation to buy it, crack it open and stick some up my nose xDYou resisted doing all that in public? Must have been hard, the Kiwifruit I know loooves to have sneezing fits in public! I have used it pretty infrequently for about two months, and I feel perfectly fine, if it makes you feel any safer sleepin sig!
Kiwifruit Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Okay, okay, correction... Buy it at another pharmacy (because no one I know can ever see me buying something designed for colds), take it home, wait til no one's home, crack it open, then - and only then! - stick some up my nose
Ouro Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 I actually use a vicks camphor inhaler sometimes when I have a cold for the genuine purpose of easing congestion, and unfortunately I can report that it has never once made me sneeze. I shall have to try it while not congested now though, for highly important scientific comparison, obviously.
