RiversD Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 I went to a picnic today. I arrived late and people were generally chilling out on the grass. My friends T and P were lying down chatting. I stood a little behind them to talk with one of the girls, who was trying to fix a kite. T and P are about average height, P has shortish, thick black hair, and a nose that’s very rounded at the tip, like it got halfway to bulbous and decided to stop.I hadn’t been there long when P suddenly jerked up with a “chff-shew!” It looked a bit like… like when someone tries to do a sit-up, but doesn’t keep their legs on the floor. A foetal position turned 90 degrees to the side, as it were. He rolled from that to a more normal sitting position, pausing halfway to catch another “hh…chfffsh!” in steepled hands.“Ohh, I think I’ve got a touch of the hay fever…” (he phrases things oddly sometimes)Then he pitched forwards into both hands again, this time with a double. “chffsh! hh…chffsch!” Our friend H, a few feet away, sneezed almost in unison with him, a louder but more feminine “IESHHEW!” She laughed, and said “It’s catching!”P laughed too, but cut himself off with another “chffsh!” his sneezes were quiet, but seemed to have more force than the decibel level merited, if you know what I mean.He stayed sitting, resting his elbows on his knees and holding both hands in a steeple around his nose and mouth. A few breaths later, he sneezed again, “chffsch!”H followed him: “IESHHI!”Then a redheaded girl I didn’t know: “ePtSCHH!”It was like he was setting off chains of sneezing- those were just the guys near enough for me to see who it was, there were a few others dotted around. High pollen day, I guess.P stayed as he was, breathing through his hands. He didn’t respond when we spoke to him. A couple of times he seemed about to sneeze again, but no. He lowered his hands.“You okay?” I asked.“Yeah.” He twisted to look up at me. “I’m just trying to regulate my breathing ‘cause of the hayfever.”“You need an antihistamine?”He didn’t have one, so I passed mine over. He said that he hadn’t been expecting it to be a problem, but that:“I think my error was lying down with my head in the grass. I didn’t think that through.”The antihistamine must have worked pretty fast, because he didn’t get sneezy again after that. He was all sniffly and rubbing his eyes for a while, but that faded too. Just as well, I’d rather he not be miserable.
Snufaleeze Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 Gosh, good obs! I always find it weird when there is chain sneezing. P sounds like he has hot sneezes!
RiversD Posted June 1, 2014 Author Posted June 1, 2014 P sounds like he has hot sneezes!Yeah, they're pretty cute. I find the way he's closed off to the world for a few seconds kinda attractive too. It's like "nope, dealing with this right now, ears, eyes, etc will be back in operation shortly."
SneezyRae Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I love a good picnic and that sounds like it was a good picnic

March Hare Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 Oh wow, that's a great observation! That sneeze chain-reaction... amazing. Lovely read!
A440 Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 Damn! That must have been fun to watch, especially since everyone else is remarking on the humor of it and you're just taking pleasure in your surfeit of sneezes. And P does sound like he has very cute sneezes, too.Awesome obs; thanks for sharing!
ERWcst Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 You're a very good friend for not getting too wrapped up in your enjoyment to not offer him some meds. A very nice sounding picnic! Wish I could spend a bit more time outside in the daytime right about now!!!!
