What is the biological function of a stuffy nose?

I've never understood why our bodies fight illness by causing congestion or a stuffy nose. A runny nose, I can understand- to flush out toxins and pathogens. But a stuffy nose? I just don't get it. Can anyone enlighten me?

According to google "Many people mistakenly think a stuffy nose is the result of too much mucus in your nasal passages. A stuffy or clogged nose is actually caused by inflamed blood vessels in your sinuses. These irritated blood vessels are usually caused by a cold, the flu, allergies, or a sinus infection."
