So, I was reading through old topics and I remembered this old drabble challenge that I used to enjoy so much:

And I thought, you know, I'm really bad at finding the motivation to continue longer stories (obviously, because I have that one that I posted a while ago that's been going stale in my drafts for over a year [that I still might continue one day]), so why don't I try these? And before I knew it I had 15 done, so I mean why not share them?

They're going to be mostly original, and my victims this time around are going to be Riley and Collin.

Riley is a sophomore in college, he has medium brown hair and dull green eyes and is eager but a little shy when it comes to relationships.

Collin is a junior in college, physics major, darker brown hair and light brown eyes, he's more secure and he wears sweaters a lot

(I'm not the best at physical descriptions past eye/hair color, but pretend they're both attractive because that makes it more fun)

Also I might include some Sekaiichi Hatsukoi and Hetalia (maybe) and probably other various things depending on what I'm reading/ watching/crying over. And there is a 97% chance these are going to be super sappy because I live for that

34- Relief (Original)

It’s February but the morning forecast had promised high forties. A light jacket hadn’t seemed like such a bad idea when Riley was leaving the house, but now that the day has passed it’s dropped a solid twenty degrees and suddenly a light jacket is far from enough. Riley shivers in the hard seat of the bus. There’s about a half hour left until he reaches his stop, and his hand is in his chin. Every so often, his eyelids grow heavy and he has to catch himself when his head droops forward. He doesn’t like the uncomfortable crick of falling asleep without proper support, and there’s no good way to fall asleep on a bus. Plus, he can’t miss his stop.

“Tired?” Collin, who lives a floor up from Riley, has been sitting next to him since the last stop. This is the first time they’ve spoken, ever. Riley notes that his voice is soft, thinks it’s the kind of voice he could fall asleep listening to. Riley sighs, rubs his eyes, sniffles, because the lack of heat on the bus has caused his nose to start running.

“M’alright for now, I’ll crash as soon as I get the chance though.” They talk small for a while, Riley learns that Collin is majoring in Physics, learns that they went to the same high school, starts to feel comfortable until his nose begins to prickle.

“Eh.. excuse me.” He turns to the side, pinches his nose. “Hih…NGkt!” Sniffles afterwards, yawns into his fist.

“Bless you. Hey, if you’re that tired, we live in the same building so I can wake you up when it’s time to get off.” Riley relaxes instantly, he’s so grateful. It’s not too much longer, so he’s willing to sacrifice comfort. He yawns again.

“That would be nice. Please.”

“It’s no problem.” And Riley lets go.

Within five minutes, Riley’s head has found Collin’s shoulder. He’s snoring softly. Collin looks at him and smiles.

18 – Midnight (Original)

It’s been a few weeks, and Riley can’t bring himself to stop thinking about Collin. They’ve talked a bit more, eaten lunch together a few times. Collin’s working a late shift at the local diner. He told Riley to wait for him to get off earlier in the day, and although initially he’d said that was too late, it’s what Riley’s mind has been drifting to all day. During class, as he studied, as he lay in the grass and wondered why he couldn’t stop thinking about Collin.

So, it’s 11:47, the world is quietly alive with the sound of crickets and car engines and the occasional sound of people walking by, and Riley is at sitting outside of the apartment building, waiting for the footsteps to be Collins. As it gets later, he wonders if he’s missed him. He keeps doing things to distract himself. Playing with his shoelaces, counting cars, that sort of thing. But every time he checks his cell phone only two minutes have elapsed at the least. Collin was supposed to be off at 11, so maybe he’s decided to do something else. Go out for drinks, just be anywhere else. Maybe he forgot. Riley realizes he doesn’t even have Collin’s cell phone number. The bridge of Riley’s nose is beginning to sting, and he gets up. Someone in the distance sneezes.

“Riley!” He hears his name echoing in the night, followed by the sound of running. He blinks hard once, turns. There, waving, half-jogging, is Collin.

“Shit, I didn’t mean to yell so loud. Half the neighbors are probably awake now.” Riley’s shoulder’s tense. “Sorry I’m so late. I know I said eleven, and I know it’s almost midnight but someone spilled a vat of barbecue sauce and it got underneath the stoves and it was a mess to clean,” He's panting and Riley thinks that he's supposed to be mad, not find this endearing. And then Collin smiles, “but you’re here.”

“I didn’t have anything else to do, so yes, I’m here.” Riley suddenly feels incredibly silly for waiting so long. Collin laughs, and his breath catches at the end.

“Hh..hang on,” He holds a finger up, turns away. “Hh..Eescchh!...... hh!..heh! H’Xshu! Uh’xshu!” Collin coughs a little when his fit is done.

“Sorry, allergy season. Wanna go inside?”

“Yeah, it’s about time.”

“Don't be mad, I didn’t mean to make you wait.”

Riley is more mad at himself than anything. He waited an hour. Why had he waited an hour?

“Hh’KSShew! Ugh, I gotta get inside, Riley, come on.” They’re halfway up the steps, Collin lives on the fourth floor, and Riley on the third floor, when Collin stops.

“What are you doing?” Riley snaps, impatient.

“This.” And Collin steps down, closer to Riley, takes his face in his hands, and kisses him, soft and slow and sweet on the mouth.

“That’s what you were really waiting for, right?” Riley’s face is on fire, he doesn’t know what do, say, think. Collin smiles at him, knowingly. And then he turns to the side and sneezes three times.

“Fuck, that’s gross.” Collin starts walking up the stairs again, and it takes Riley a few seconds before he remembers he’s supposed to follow. As he quickens his pace to catch up with Collin, he finds himself thinking, Right.

39 – Muffle

Fandom: Original

Characters: Collin, Riley

2 AM, Riley wakes up because he can’t breathe through his nose and the blankets are too hot. Collin is on the other side of him, dead to the world. Carefully, Riley unravels himself from the sheets, shivering as the cold air greets his skin. Collin doesn’t even stir. Riley knows that in a few seconds his cold will catch up to him, so he wants to get away from Collin, leave his boyfriend to sleep peacefully.

He gets to the bathroom and turns on the light, making his head spin. He grabs a towel off the rack. It’s blue, soft. He’s going to ruin it.

Riley sinks to the floor, back against the wall. First, he’s coughing, letting the fabric absorb the sound, wiping his nose as he needs to. As his nose begins to run, it also begins to prickle.

“Hh’Gsshmmf! ..heh..Heh’eeshmmpff!!” He needs to blow his nose badly, and he tries to do so softly. This only irritates his nose more, and he’s sneezing again and again, small, tired, ‘Hh’IShmpff!’’s. He has to adjust the towel as it gets wetter and wetter. A few minutes pass and he’s in the middle of trying to cough quietly when the door opens.

“What are you doing?”

Riley waits until his lungs settle, keeps his face buried in the towel, studies the patterns on the linoleum while his boyfriend leans against the door frame.

“I uh… I wogcke,” Riley sniffles, hard. “Woke up, didn’t wadt to...to...hhh-Gkktt!..hh.. wake you up too.”

Collin yawns but there's concern all over his face. “ Bless you. I was wondering where you went. Hell of a cold you’ve got there, Ry.”

Riley gives his nose another rub with the towel, folds it over so that Collin can’t see the collateral damage.

“I feel awful,” Riley croaks. There are dark circles under his eyes and sweaty tendrils of hair clinging to his forehead, “you should go back to sleep.”

“Mm, sound it too.” Collin yawns again, frowns at the view of Riley miserable on the cold bathroom floor. “Come back to bed with me.”

“I’ll keep you awake,”

“Don’t care, come back to bed with me.” Collin extends his hand. Riley’s palms are warm; he’s shivering.

When they’re back in bed, Collin wraps himself around Riley, nuzzles his face in the curve of Riley’s neck. He murmurs things like 'shh, it’s okay’ and 'I've got you, you're alright' every time Riley’s body shakes with fit of coughs or sneezes. He doesn’t let himself sleep until Riley’s breathing evens out.

53 – Blanket

Original

Characters: Collin, Riley

“Riley?” Collin peaks into Riley’s apartment after unlocking the door. On the couch, Riley is fast asleep, snoring, breathing through his mouth. The room is dark, but the TV is still playing. Reruns of How I Met Your Mother. The light from the television screen illuminates the space straight in front of the couch. The table is full of crumpled tissues and the empty box in the middle of all of them. The floor is worse.

Riley is on his side, hair falling in front of his face. His arms are pressed together, close to his face, and in one hand is a soggy tissue, resting just next to his chapped, red nose. He makes no indication that he’s aware of anything happening around him.

Collin goes into his bedroom and snags what he deems to be the warmest sheet, takes a new box of tissues on the way out. He returns, sets the tissues on the table and spreads the blanket across Riley’s still form. Collin leans down and kisses his cheek, whispers that he loves him and feel better. Then he switches the TV off, locks the door on his way out.

47 – Wary

Fandom: Original

Characters: Riley, Collin

“Can I hold your hand?” Collin asks one day as they’re at the farmers mark. Riley glances over, then looks around. Aside from the vendors, they’re surrounded by pretty girls in sunhats and sundresses, middle aged men in khaki shorts. Couples. Families.

“Here?”

“Yeah.”

Riley’s hands are presently in his pockets, but he takes a deep breath and brings them out. At the last second, he chickens out and points to a burrito stand instead, exclaims that he’s heard great things about it and that they should go there. Beside him Collin gasps. Riley has come to know this sound as an indication that Collin's hayfever is giving him hell. He turns and finds Collin stopped in the middle of the street with his eyes closed and his mouth open, until he directs two quick sneezes into his elbow. “Hh’Xxshuh! H’Xsshhhu! Let’s go then,” Collin's eyes and nose are itchy and watering and driving him crazy.

After they’ve both bought breakfast burritos, they find themselves sharing a bench while they eat. The burritos are huge, and Riley is glad because it means he needs both hands to hold it, though he feels guilty thinking this way.

“Hh..hh! EhXxshhuu! Oh mby god,” Collin groans, rubbing his burning eyes.

“Doesn’t that just make it worse?”

“Most of the t…time, yeh..yes, Hh’Khhxxsh!”

“Bless you. Do you wanna head back?”

“Oh no. No.” Collin shakes his head, sniffs, “It’s okay, I’m used to it. It's not even bad right now. ”

“You sure?”

“Positive,”

Riley looks around again, swallows. His chest feels light and his heart is beating faster than it should be, but he sets his burrito down and he takes Collin’s hand. Collin can’t stop the corners of his mouth from turning up, or his eyes from crinkling.

“Thanks for sticking this out,” Collin tries to reply but his allergies interrupt him.

“Of..Of cour..hh! Course.. hh’EESSSCHII!” He ducks forward into his elbow, a few nearby birds vacate. Riley tenses, feeling heat on his back as people’s heads turn towards the sound. Suddenly all the chatter of the crowd, all of the dirty looks- it’s all for them. Instinctively, he drops Collin’s hand like it's a piece of hot coal.

“I-I, I’ve never…”Riley trails off. He knows he needs to explain himself, but faced with what he assumes is Collin’s disappointment, he finds himself unable to get the words he wants to say out.

Never held hands with a guy before. Never even been with a guy before. People are staring. It’s weird I want to I’m sorry.

“I understand.” Unexpectedly, Collin smiles. Unbeknownst to Riley, he can wait.

4 – Fake

Fandom: Original

Characters: Riley, Collin

“Hh..Hh! Hheh..UhxSHh!” Collin grabs another napkin out of the dispenser, blows his nose for the third time since they’ve sat down.

“Bless,” Riley offers. He sips at his water, thinking there’s something off about Collin’s sneezes. “Allergies still giving you problems?”

“You’d think I’d be okay since we’re inside, but yes.” Collin sniffles, rubbing one of his eyes.

“And you’re sure you aren’t hungry?”

“Nope, I ate before we came.”

“But it was your idea to get dinner,” Collin blinks. Screws his nose to the side.

“I guess I kind of…” He swallows, “fuh..forgot, and ate so..some -- sorryscuseme,” Collin frantically grabs a handful of napkins and turns to the side, “hihh- KShhew! UhKShiew! Heh…heh…hhhk!..uhh…” Collin massages his nose with the napkins, eyes closed, looking miserable.

“Bless you, bless you.”

“Take my allergies away, Ry.” Collin moans, still holding his crumpled napkins. Riley laughs. He’s got a theory he wants to test.

“If I could I would. Hey, can you pass me the salt?” Collin gives Riley sort of a puzzled look; the salt is on Riley’s side of the table. Still, he reaches for the shaker. Riley takes his hand before he can get there. It’s warmer than usual, hot even. For a fraction of a second, Collin’s eyes go wide.

“You’re sick.” Riley says with absolute conviction. Collin gives a wavery chuckle,

“What are you talking about? It's just allergies, like always.”

“No. You're warm. You have a fever.” Collin sighs. His shoulders fall and his next sentence comes out a little rougher. Suddenly, he looks like he hasn’t slept well in days.

“Did you just figure it out?”

“You never complain that much about your allergies. And you look like hell.” Collin notes these things for next time, sniffles wetly.

“Thought it would work.”
