RediChalyn Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Okay so most of you probably know that there's a video being posted around on Facebook to raise awareness about texting and driving. It's a really graphic video of a car wreck. Here's my problem though...about 2 years ago (will be 3 years to the date on October 7, 2015) I was in a major car wreck with a semi truck (an 18 wheeler). No, I wasn't texting, drinking, doing drugs, or anything else. It totaled my car and I almost died with the two people I had with me. It's really hard to think about, but every time I see a truck on the road I freeze up now and have flashbacks, and every night I have nightmares about it. Well, that video has one thing that is dead on: the sound. Now then, my Facebook will auto-play videos on my home page and I don't know how to stop that so I asked very politely that all my friends stop posting it or at least set it up where I won't be able to view it because it really freaking bothers me. But instead, apparently they have a twisted sense of humor and that video popped up 4 more times in less than 5 minutes. Does anyone know a good way to calm down so I don't have a complete meltdown next time I see that? Because now it's starting to crop up everywhere I go online, and it's really getting to me I have enough problems without that added in.
Aranea Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Oh gosh, that's really awful. I'm sorry! What do you use to browse the internet? Maybe switching browsers up for a little bit will help? Maybe you can mute your laptop, or have other music playing so you can get away from it fast? There might be an app to mute your browser, so you just don't have to hear it?These two links I found might help:http://www.techrepublic.com/forums/questions/turn-off-unwanted-sound-ads/http://www.ehow.com/how_8734025_mute-background-ads.htmlI hope you can get a break from that ad, I can't even imagine how awful and stressful that must be for you.
Cutelittlenose Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 *hugs* You could try these:http://i.imgur.com/Huou7Gh.gif (There's this and other similar gifs that will help regulate breathing. There's no sound for this.))http://these-dandelion-wishes.tumblr.com/post/86103978811/anxiety-panic-masterpost ((I'm not sure how you calm down, but there's a few things here that might help.))http://thequietplaceproject.com/thedawnroom/http://writingweasels.tumblr.com/post/54729117346/things-to-do-when-youre-anxious-scared-or-just ((a bunch of games)www.7cupsoftea.com/ ((In case you need to talk about it))http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/take-a-break-10-websites-to-help-you-relax-for-two-minutes/((I like listening to videos of rain or classical music. That might help.))
RediChalyn Posted July 20, 2015 Author Posted July 20, 2015 Thanks guys I really appreciate it...you'd think that after almost 3 years I'd be over this by now I mean, I'm driving again and I got a different car I don't even live in the city that happened in anymore and I don't talk to the people who were in the car with me anymore but I guess some stuff just follows you around like a bad wart you can't get rid of. Aranea, it's not an ad it's a video that people are posting I already have ad blocking software but muting the sound does work thanks! And cute, most of those definitely worked thanks.

These sort of things take time and you shouldn't feel guilty about how a certain event affected you or how long it takes to recover. And you're welcome. *hugs* I'm glad I could help a bit.
Scandinavius Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 This help topic describes how you can disable autoplaying videos:https://www.facebook.com/help/community/question/?id=10202634558606616I don't know if the setting has since been changed or removed. If that doesn't work you can try setting Flash to click-to-play mode or disable it (whether disabling Flash works or not depends on your browser and what kind of video Facebook uses).

Take care of yourself, do whatever it takes to make yourself feel OK.I absolutely second The Quiet Space, by the way. The whole project connected to it is incredibly helpful when you are struggling. I'm so glad I could be of any help at all, you're very welcome.
