I'm sure we all have a few songs, where we love the lyrics at least as much as the song itself! Either because they're really poetic or funny or because they have personal meaning to us. So I decided to start this lyric appreciation thread, where you can post your favorite lyrics and highlight parts you're especially fond of. :)

I've been a big fan of Florence + the machine for years now and it's impossible to pick out a favorite song or favorite lyrics, I think. But when the new album came out, I was especially intrigued by "Delilah".

"Delilah"

I'm drifting through the halls with the sunrise
(Holding on for your call)
Climbing up the walls for that flashing light
(I can never let go)

[Refrain:]
Cause I'm gonna be free and I'm gonna be fine
(Holding on for your call)
Cause I'm gonna be free and I'm gonna be fine
(Maybe not tonight)

Now the sun is up and I'm going blind
(Holding on for your call)
Another drink just to pass the time
(I can never say no)

[Refrain]

[Pre-Chorus:]
It's a different kind of danger
And the bells are ringing out
And I'm calling for my mother
As I pull the pillars down
It's a different kind of danger
And my feet are spinning around
Never knew I was a dancer
'Till Delilah showed me how

Too fast for freedom
Sometimes it all falls down
These chains never leave me
I keep dragging them around

[Chorus:]
Now I'm dancing with Delilah and her vision is mine
(Holding on for your call)
A different kind of danger in the daylight
(I can never let go)
Took anything to cut you, I can find
(Holding on for your call)
A different kind of a danger in the daylight
(Can't you let me know?)

Now it's one more boy and it's one more lie
(Holding on for your call)
Taking the pills just to pass the time
(I can never say no)

[Refrain]

[Pre-Chorus]

[Chorus]

Strung up, strung out for your love
Hang in, hung up, it's so rough
I'm wrung and ringing out
Why can't you let me know?
[x2]

[Pre-Chorus x2]

Too fast for freedom
Sometimes it all falls down
These chains never leave me
I keep dragging them around
[x2]
"Mother" is another one I really love, also by Florence.
"Mother"

[Refrain:]

Oh Lord, won't you leave me
Leave me on my knees?
Cause I belong to the ground now
And it belongs to thee
And oh Lord, won't you leave me
Leave me just like this?
Cause I belong to the ground now
I want no more than this

How I long for the autumn
The sun keeps burning deep
Every stone in this city keeps reminding me
Can you protect me from what I want?
The love I let in, it left me so lost

Mother, make me
Make me a big tall tree
So I can shed my leaves and let it blow through me
Mother, make me
Make me a big grey cloud
So I can rain on you things I can't say out loud

All these couples are kissing
And I can't stand the heat
I lost my shoes and left the party
I wander in the street

I put my feet into the fountain
The statues' all asleep
No use wishing on the water
It grants you no relief

Mother, make me
Make me a bird of prey
So I can rise above this, let it fall away

Mother, make me
Make me a song so sweet
Heaven trembles, fallen at our feet

And then, of course, there's Ben Howard with his beautiful lyrics. Again, sooo many beautiful songs to choose from! It was almost impossible, because I love them all so much. But I finally decided on "I Forget Where We Were".

"I Forget Where We Were"

Oh hey, I was listening
I was watching serial
Blinded by the sunshine screen
You, you were in the kitchen oh your,
Mind was marked
And wounded with the wounders whip
And that's how summer passed oh your,
Great divide and range of green green grass
Oh, maybe it was peace at last, who knew

Hello love, my invincible friend
Hello love, the thistle and the burr
Hello love, for you I have so many words that I,
I forget where we were

Oh hey, I was listening,
I was stung by all of us
And blind even affable
And as per usual, you were
Skipping and laughing eyes at the bedroom door

Don't take it so seriously, no
Only time is ours
The rest we'll just wait and see
Maybe you're right babe, maybe

Oh no, and that's how summer passed
Oh your, great divide
And range of green green grass
Oh, maybe it was peace at last, who knew

Hello love, my invincible friend
Hello love, the thistle and the burr
Hello love, for you I have so many words that I,
I forget where we were

I, I forget where we were
I, I forget where we were
I forget where we were, no
I forget where we were, no

Oh no, and that's how summer passed
Oh your, great divide
And range of green green grass
Oh, maybe it was peace at last, who knew

There are sooo many more, but now I'm curious to hear yours first! Aw... I just love music so much! And it wouldn't be the same without amazing lyrics imo... <3

Wow...I see why you like the song. Must go and listen now :)

Can I offer mine please? I'm a huge Mumford and Sons fan and "Sigh no more" is by far my favourite!

"Sigh No More"

Serve God, love me and mend

This is not the end

Lived unbruised, we are friends

And I'm sorry

I'm sorry

Sigh no more, no more

One foot in sea, one on shore

My heart was never pure

You know me

You know me

But man is a giddy thing

Oh man is a giddy thing

Oh man is a giddy thing

Oh man is a giddy thing

Love; it will not betray you

Dismay or enslave you, it will set you free

Be more like the man you were made to be

There is a design, an alignment to cry

Of my heart to see,

The beauty of love as it was made to be

Love; it will not betray you

Dismay or enslave you, it will set you free

Be more like the man you were made to be

There is a design, an alignment to cry

Of my heart to see,

The beauty of love as it was made to be

Love; it will not betray you

Dismay or enslave you, it will set you free

Be more like the man you were made to be

And there is a design, an alignment to cry

Of my heart to see,

The beauty of love as it was made to be

In many ways I see it as sort of man's apology or at least a further explanation of the original "sigh no more" poem by Shakespeare which was featured with music in Brannagh's "much ado about nothing".

These are the original Shakespeare lyrics:

Sigh no more, ladies, sigh nor more;

Men were deceivers ever;

One foot in sea and one on shore,

To one thing constant never;

Then sigh not so,

But let them go,

And be you blithe and bonny;

Converting all your sounds of woe

Into. Hey nonny, nonny.

Sing no more ditties, sing no mo,

Or dumps so dull and heavy;

The fraud of men was ever so,

Since summer first was leavy.

Then sigh not so,

But let them go,

And be you blithe and bonny,

Converting all your sounds of woe

Into. Hey, nonny, nonny.

I really like Florence. I'll have to listen to those two and Mumford and Sons, "Sigh No More" has always been a favorite.

I am a HUGE fan of Ed Sheeran. I've been a Sheerio before X. I love X and many of those songs have moved me to tears, Photograph, One, Tenerife Sea, Thinking Out Loud. But my favorites are Kiss Me from + and Cold Coffee from Songs I Wrote with Amy (an EP). He has some amazing raps too but those are really long to write out the lyrics. Take It Back is my and my daughter's favorite. I don't think he has incredible insight into the meaning of life (other than loving and respecting each other is important), but he knows how to paint a picture with words and evoke emotion.

Kiss Me by Ed Sheeran (This is clearly a precursor to Thinking Out Loud. He plays the opening verse before TOL in concert.)

Settle down with me

Cover me up

Cuddle me in

Lie down with me

And hold me in your arms

And your heart's against my chest, your lips pressed to my neck

I'm falling for your eyes, but they don't know me yet

And with a feeling I'll forget, I'm in love now

Kiss me like you wanna be loved

You wanna be loved

You wanna be loved

This feels like falling in love

Falling in love

We're falling in love

Settle down with me

And I'll be your safety

You'll be my lady

I was made to keep your body warm

But I'm cold as the wind blows so hold me in your arms

Oh no

My heart's against your chest, your lips pressed to my neck

I'm falling for your eyes, but they don't know me yet

And with this feeling I'll forget, I'm in love now

Kiss me like you wanna be loved

You wanna be loved

You wanna be loved

This feels like falling in love

Falling in love

We're falling in love

Yeah I've been feeling everything

From hate to love

From love to lust

From lust to truth

I guess that's how I know you

So I hold you close to help you give it up

So kiss me like you wanna be loved

You wanna be loved

You wanna be loved

This feels like falling in love

Falling in love

We're falling in love

Kiss me like you wanna be loved

You wanna be loved

You wanna be loved

This feels like falling in love

Falling in love

Falling in love

We're falling in love

Cold Coffee by Ed Sheeran

She's like cold coffee in the morning

I'm drunk off last nights whisky and coke

She'll make me shiver without warning

And make me laugh as if I'm in on the joke

And you can stay with me forever

Or you could stay with me for now

Tell me if I'm wrong

Tell me if I'm right

Tell me if you need a loving hand

To help you fall asleep tonight

Tell me if I know

Tell me if I do

Tell me how to fall in love the way you want me to

I'll wake with coffee in the morning

But she prefers two lumps of sugar and tea

Outside the day is up and calling

But I don't have to be, so please go back to sleep

Stay with me forever

Or you could stay with me for now

Tell me if I'm wrong

Tell me if I'm right

Tell me if you need a loving hand

To help you fall asleep tonight

Tell me if I know

Tell me if I do

Tell me how to fall in love the way you want me to

'Cause I love the way you wake me up

For goodness sake will my love not be enough?

Tell me if I'm wrong

Tell me if I'm right

Tell me if you need a loving hand

To help you fall asleep tonight

Tell me if I know

Tell me if I do

Tell me how to fall in love the way you want me to

Tell me if I'm wrong

Tell me if I'm right

Tell me if you need a loving hand

To help you fall asleep tonight

Ever since I was a child, I have always loved heavy metal. One of my favorite bands of the genre is Slipknot. Two of my absolute favorite songs by them are “Snuff” and “Vermillion” (the second part).

“Snuff”

Bury all your secrets in my skin

Come away with innocence, and leave me with my sins

The air around me still feels like a cage

And love is just a camouflage for what resembles rage again...

So if you love me, let me go.

And run away before I know.

My heart is just too dark to care.

I can't destroy what isn't there.

Deliver me into my fate -

If I'm alone I cannot hate

I don't deserve to have you...

My smile was taken long ago

If I can change I hope I never know

I still press your letters to my lips

And cherish them in parts of me that savor every kiss

I couldn't face a life without your lights

But all of that was ripped apart when you refused to fight

So save your breath, I will not hear.

I think I made it very clear.

You couldn't hate enough to love.

Is that supposed to be enough?

I only wish you weren't my friend.

Then I could hurt you in the end.

I never claimed to be a saint...

Ooh, my own was banished long ago

It took the death of hope to let you go

So break yourself against my stones

And spit your pity in my soul

You never needed any help

You sold me out to save yourself

And I won't listen to your shame

You ran away - you're all the same

Angels lie to keep control...

Ooh, my love was punished long ago

If you still care, don't ever let me know

If you still care, don't ever let me know...

***

“Vermillion, Part 2”

She seemed dressed in all of me, stretched across my shame.

All the torment and the pain

Leaked through and covered me

I'd do anything to have her to myself

Just to have her for myself

Now I don't know what to do, I don't know what to do when she makes me sad.

She is everything to me

The unrequited dream

A song that no one sings

The unattainable, she's a myth that I have to believe in

All I need to make it real is one more reason

I don't know what to do, I don't know what to do when she makes me sad.

But I won't let this build up inside of me

I won't let this build up inside of me

I won't let this build up inside of me

I won't let this build up inside of me

A catch in my throat choke

Torn into pieces

I won't, no!

I don't wanna be this...

But I won't let this build up inside of me

I won't let this build up inside of me

I won't let this build up inside of me

I won't let this build up inside of me

She isn't real

I can't make her real

She isn't real

I can't make her real

***

As well as this, I also really love the band Five Finger Death Punch, and their song “Remember Everything”.

“Remember Everything”

Oh, dear mother, I love you

I'm sorry, I wasn't good enough

Dear father, forgive me

'Cause in your eyes, I just never added up

In my heart I know I failed you, but you left me here alone

[Chorus]

If I could hold back the rain, would you numb the pain?

'Cause I remember everything.

If I could help you forget, would you take my regrets?

'Cause I remember everything.

Oh, dear brother, just don't hate me

For never standing by you or being by your side

Dear sister, please don't blame me

I only did what I thought was truly right

It's a long and lonely road, when you know you walk alone

[Chorus]

If I could hold back the rain, would you numb the pain?

'Cause I remember everything.

If I could help you forget, would you take my regrets?

'Cause I remember everything.

I feel like running away

I'm still so far from home

You say that I'll never change

But what the fuck do you know?

I'll burn it all to the ground before I let you in

Please forgive me, I can't forgive you now.

I remember everything.

[Chorus]

If I could hold back the rain, would you numb the pain?

'Cause I remember everything.

If I could help you forget, would you take my regrets?

'Cause I remember everything.

It all went by so fast

I still can't change the past

I always will remember everything

If we could start again,

Would that have changed the end?

We remember everything, everything.

I love Snuff!! But mine would be My Demons by Starset.

My Demons

Mayday Mayday the ship is slowly sinking

They think I'm crazy but they don't know the feeling

They're all around me circling like vultures

They wanna break me and wash away my colors

Wash away my colors

Take me high and I'll sing

Oh you make everything

Okay Okay Okay

Kay Okay Okay

We are one in the same

Oh you take all of the pain

Away Away Away

Way Away Away

Save me if I become

My demons

I cannot stop this sickness taking over

It takes control and drags me into nowhere

I need your help I can't fight this forever

I know you're watching I can feel you out there

Take me high and I'll sing

Oh you make everything

Okay Okay Okay

Kay Okay Okay

We are one in the same

Oh you take all of the pain

Away Away Away

Way Away Away

Save me if I become

My demons

Hmmmm, this is such a hard question because I love so many different songs! But I guess I'll go with the one that I've named my blog after "Believer" by American Authors because I feel it describes me personally, like where I'm at and all. I'm bolding the whole song because I just like all the lyrics so much

(I'm just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don't wanna let it go)

(I'm just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don't wanna let it go)

I'm a little bit sheltered
I'm a little bit scared
I'm a little bit nervous
I'm goin' nowhere

I'm a little bit jealous
I'm a little bit slow
I'm a little bit hurtful
And I don't wanna let it go

No

And I don't wanna let it go

I'm a little bit angry
When everyone's around
But I get a little lonely
When no one's out

I feel my demons misleading me

I'm just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don't wanna let it go

I'm just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don't wanna let it go

Maybe when I get older
And I'm in the ground
Weights off my shoulders,
It was bringin' me down (Down)

I've never been that lucky
I've never tasted fame (Fame)
I'm always lookin' for somethin'
But I hate changing

Time fades
There's no space
As life breaks new ground

I'm just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don't wanna let it go

I'm just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don't wanna let it go

It doesn't matter what is out there
My head is spinnin' and I won't bail out
It doesn't matter what is out there

'Cause time fades
There's no space
As life breaks new ground

(I'm just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don't wanna let it go)

I'm just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don't wanna let it go

I'm just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don't wanna let it go

I love finding songs that are super lyrically gifted that fit into what I like listening too. I really like looking for the unknown and under appreciated songs out there too. Here's some of my favorite lyrics so far:

This Love - Free

Well my head is dead and my mind is fed up
Of all this stupid time
That has dropped off the clock
And I've avoided the knock
From the monster that's been running my life

He's ugly as hell and well,
His heart is broken
His eyes tell a tale with words unspoken
He dreams on a day when he can honestly say
He's alright

Well, keep it in mind
I'm not as stable or able
To use all my guts and turn over the tables
Open the door and stare the monster between the eyes

The times have turned and burned a hole in this heart
Confronted the face of what tore my life apart
And I'll start by living every moment like it was my last

And I'm dying to be free
When these chains are all gone, I swear I'll bring the sun to it's knees
And I'd kill just to be me
I'm gonna die with every thought and every sickness I've ever caught
Striving to believe

And I'm dying to be free
When these chains are all gone, I swear I'll bring the sun to it's knees
And I'd kill just to be me
I'm gonna die with every thought and every sickness I've ever caught
Striving to believe

Well my head is dead and my mind is fed up
Of all this stupid time
That has dropped off the clock
And I've avoided the knock
From the monster that's been running my life

SafetySuit - These Times

These times will try hard to define me
And I’ll try to hold my head up high
But I’ve seen despair here from the inside
And it’s got a one track mind

And I have this feeling in my gut now
And I don’t know what it is I’ll find
Does anybody ever feel like
You’re always one step behind

Now I’m sitting alone here in my bed
I’m waiting for an answer I don’t know that I’ll get
I cannot stand to look in the mirror, I’m failing
I’m telling you these times are hard
But they will

And I know there’s someone out there somewhere
Who has it much worse than I do
But I have a dream inside, a perfect life
I’d give anything just to work
It’s like I’m only trying to dig my way out
Of all these things I can’t

And I am sitting alone here in my bed
I’m waiting for an answer I don’t know that I’ll get
I cannot stand to look in the mirror, I’m failing
I’m telling you these times are hard
But they will pass
They will pass
They will pass
These times are hard
But they will

These times will try hard to define me
But I will hold my head up high

Sitting alone here in my bed
I’m waiting for an answer I don’t know that I’ll get
I cannot stand to look in the mirror, I’m failing
I’m telling you these times are hard
But they will pass

And I know there’s a reason
I just keep hoping it won’t be long ’til I see it
And maybe if we throw up our hands and believe it
I’m telling you these times are hard
But they will pass
They will pass
They will pass
These times are hard
But they will pass

SafetySuit - Never Stop

This is my love song to you
Let every woman know I’m yours
So you can fall asleep each night, babe
And know I’m dreaming of you more

You’re always hoping that we make it
You always want to keep my gaze
Well you’re the only one I see
And that’s the one thing that won’t change

I’ll never stop trying
I’ll never stop watching as you leave
I’ll never stop losing my breath
Every time I see you looking back at me
I’ll never stop holding your hand
I’ll never stop opening your door
I’ll never stop choosing you babe
I’ll never get used to you

And with this love song to you
It’s not a momentary phase
You are my life, I don’t deserve you
But you love me just the same
And as the mirror says we’re older
I will not look the other way
You are my life, my love, my only
And that’s the one thing that won’t change

I’ll never stop trying
I’ll never stop watching as you leave
I’ll never stop losing my breath
Every time I see you looking back at me
I’ll never stop holding your hand
I’ll never stop opening your door
I’ll never stop choosing you babe
I’ll never get used to you

Still get my heart racing (you)
Still get my heart racing (for you)
Still get my heart racing (you)
Still get my heart racing (for you)

I’ll never stop trying
I’ll never stop watching as you leave
I’ll never stop losing my breath
Every time I see you looking back at me
I’ll never stop holding your hand
I’ll never stop opening your door
I’ll never stop choosing you babe
I’ll never get used to you

Still get my heart racing (you)
Still get my heart racing (for you)
Still get my heart racing (you)
Still get my heart racing (for you)

Still get my heart racing (you)
Still get my heart racing (for you)
Still get my heart racing (you)
Still get my heart racing (for you)

Rascal Flatts - Everyday

You could've bowed out gracefully
But you didn't
You knew enough to know
To leave well enough alone
But you wouldn't
I drive myself crazy
Tryin' to stay out of my own way
The messes that I make
But my secrets are so safe
The only one who gets me
Yeah, you get me
It's amazing to me

[CHORUS]
How every day
Every day, every day
You save my life

I come around all broken down and
Crowded out
And you're comfort
Sometimes the place I go
Is so deep and dark and desperate
I don't know, I don't know

[Repeat Chorus]

Sometimes I swear, I don't know if
I'm comin' or goin'
But you always say something
Without even knowin'
That I'm hangin' on to your words
With all of my might and it's alright
Yeah, I'm alright for one more night-
Every day
Every day, every day, every day
Every day, every day
You save me, you save me, oh, oh, oh
Every day
Every, every, every day-

Every day you save my life

Battle Scars - Paradise Fears

Oh-ohhhh-oh-ohhhh

Oh-ohhhh-oh-ohhhh
Oh-ohhhh-oh-ohhhh-ohhhhh

Oh-ohhhh-oh-ohhhh
Oh-ohhhh-oh-ohhhh
Oh-ohhhh-oh-ohhhh-ohhhhh

This is an anthem for the homesick, for the beaten,
The lost, the broke, the defeated.
A song for the heartsick, for the standbys,
Living life in the shadow of a goodbye.

Do you remember when we learned how to fly?
We'd play make-believe; we were young and had time on our side.
You're stuck on the ground,
Got lost, can't be found.
Just remember that you're still alive.

I'll carry you home.
No, you're not alone.
Keep marching on,
This is worth fighting for,
You know we've all got battle scars.
You've had enough,
But just don't give up.
Stick to your guns,
You are worth fighting for.
You know we've all got battle scars.
Keep marching on.

This is a call to the soldiers, the fighters,
The young, the innocent, and righteous.
We've got a little room to grow.
Better days are near,
Hope is so much stronger than fear.

So if you jump, kid, don't be scared to fall.
We'll be kings and queens in this dream, all for one, one for all.
You can light up the dark,
There's a fire in your heart,
Burning brighter than ever before.

I'll carry you home.
No, you're not alone.
Keep marching on,
This is worth fighting for,
You know we've all got battle scars.
You've had enough,
But just don't give up.
Stick to your guns,
You are worth fighting for.
You know we've all got battle scars.
Keep marching on.

On and on, like we're living on a broken record.
Hope is strong, but misery's a little quicker.
Sit, and we wait, and we drown there,
Thinking, "Why bother playing when it's unfair?"
They say life's a waste, I say they lack belief.
They tell me luck will travel, I tell 'em that's why I've got feet.
Left, right, left, right,
Moving along to the pulse of a heartbeat.
This could be the last chance you have to fly.
Do you like the ground? Want it to pass you by?
Man, you had it all when you were just a kid.
Do you even remember who you were back then?
What do you want in life? Will you be twice as strong?
What would you sacrifice? What are you waiting on?
Don't stop, march on.

I'll carry you home.
No, you're not alone.
Keep marching on,
This is worth fighting for,
You know we've all got battle scars.
You've had enough,
But just don't give up.
Stick to your guns,
You are worth fighting for.
You know we've all got battle scars.
Keep marching on.

Oh-ohhhh-oh-ohhhh
Oh-ohhhh-oh-ohhhh
Oh-ohhhh-oh-ohhhh-ohhhhh

Oh-ohhhh-oh-ohhhh
Oh-ohhhh-oh-ohhhh
Oh-ohhhh-oh-ohhhh-ohhhhh

Keep marching on.

I've loved this song since it came out in 2007, and it has a really personal meaning to me because I've kinda had suicidal type issues since I was in my early teens, and it's also helped get my best friend through a lot of crap after I showed it to her.

Rascal Flatts - Stand

You feel like a candle in a hurricane
Just like a picture with a broken frame
Alone and helpless
Like you've lost your fight
But you'll be alright, you'll be alright
'Cause when push comes to shove
You taste what you're made of
You might bend, 'til you break
'Cause it's all you can take
On your knees you look up
Decide you've had enough
You get mad, you get strong
Wipe your hands, shake it off
Then you stand,
Then you stand
Life's like a novel
With the end ripped out
The edge of a canyon
With only one way down
Take what you're given before it's gone
And start holding on, keep holding on
'Cause when push comes to shove
You taste what you're made of
You might bend 'til you break
'Cause it's all you can take
On your knees you look up
Decide you've had enough
You get mad, you get strong
Wipe your hands, shake it off
Then you stand,
Yeah, then you stand
Every time you get up
And get back in the race
One more small piece of you
Starts to fall into place
Oh
'Cause when push comes to shove
You taste what you're made of
You might bend, 'til you break
'Cause it's all you can take
On your knees you look up
Decide you've had enough
You get mad, you get strong
Wipe your hands, shake it off
Then you stand,
Then you stand
Yeah, then you stand,
Yeah, yeah, baby
Woo hoo, woo hoo, woo hoo
Then you stand, yeah, yeah

Diorama - "My Justice For All"

Heaven is the new hell
Heaven is the land where milk and honey have no taste and no
Heavy rains can rain on your parade

Heaven is the new hell
No one takes a risk
No child is born and no one dies
No joy is ever stolen by a friend
in trouble

No one's in trouble, no one's in trouble

Everyone is moving at the speed of light
Genies leave their bottles and start wishing
For centuries of famine, for cowardly broken promises
To infuriate a whole new generation

As if there was a reason
To stand up and make a change
A reason for the animal
To go and find the hole in the fence

The wailing wall ain't high enough
We won't find peace beneath its shade
And I feel so out of place with my "justice for all"

My justice for all (x3)

My justice

Set your house in order
Before you leave, it will redound upon you soon
The road to hell is paved with paperwork
When things are at their proper place

The signs bode well for new life to be flourishing
Children with inventive names who play
Cops and robbers

With the dignity we had defended all our lives
As we were told to turn the other cheek

Heaven is a daydream left undreamed
And if I could I would reserve it for
The unborn and aborted

And no masterplan is needed or available
The reign of inconsistency will finally begin
With my justice for all
~
Not particularly cheerful, but so poetic it never fails to impress me.

Somebody to Love by Kacey Musgraves has some of my favourite lyrics of all time. It's a stunning song that takes on some big themes but keeps the sound really small and personal and delicate.

We're all hoping, we're all hopeless

We're all thorns and we're all roses

We're all looking down our noses at ourselves

We're all flawed and we're all perfect

We're all lost and we're all hurting

And just searching for somebody to love

We're all liars, we're all legends

We're all tens, that want elevens

We're all trying to get to heaven, but not today

We're all happy, we're all hatin'

We're all patiently impatient

And just waiting for somebody to love

We're all good, but we ain't angels

We all sin, but we ain't devils

We're all pots and we're all kettles

But we can't see it in ourselves

We're all livin' 'til we're dying

We ain't cool, but man, we're trying

Just thinking we'll be fixed by someone else

We all wrangle with religion

We all talk, but we don't listen

We're all starving for attention then we'll run

We're all paper, we're all scissors

We're all fightin' with our mirrors

Scared we'll never find somebody to love

We're all good, but we ain't angels

We all sin, but we ain't devils

We're all pots and we're all kettles

But we can't see it in ourselves

We're all livin' 'til we're dying

We ain't cool, but man, we're trying

Thinking we'll be fixed by someone else

Just tryin' to hold it all together

We all wish our best was better

Just hopin' that forever's really real

We'll miss a dime to grab a nickel

Overcomplicate the simple

We're all little kids just looking for love

Yeah, don't we all just want somebody to love?
