Yesterday I randomly recalled a documentary called "Searching for Sugar Man", which speaks of an American folk singer Sixto Rodriguez who, despite being a flop in the USA, became a huge pop culture trend in South Africa without even knowing about it.

I personally find this kind of cultural phenomena very interesting; it's amazing how things can appeal to some people just based on their collective heritage and overall mentality.

That got me wondering- is there any cultural fad which is insanely popular in your region/area and almost completely unknown about anywhere else?

For example, all over ex-Yugoslavia we obsess over an elsewhere badly recieved Italian satirical comic. And by obsess, I mean that it got ingrained in our culture so much over the time that people quote its characters and make references to it in everyday conversation and literally everyone knows what they're talking about. Recently there was a play based on it and a shitton of merchandise is available wherever you go- for some odd reason, socks seem to be the most common.

I'll leave a link to its Wikipedia article just in case it rings a bell to anyone, but I highly doubt it. :P

(Gosh, this was such a hipster thing to say. No, you're not too mainstream for me, Yugoslavians are just oddballs, okay. I love you)
