bloom
This thread is brought on by a bit of knowledge I just acquired that I feel like I was happier without. You know how it's kind of a huge joke that all the most horrifying and messed-up news stories seem to come out of Florida? A few minutes ago someone told me that this is not because Florida is some kind of weird hellscape where people cannibalize each others' faces and disembowel one another. No, no. This is because Florida's laws regarding arrest record confidentiality are very lax. (source)...it is the policy of this state that all state, county, and municipal records shall at all times be open for a personal inspection by any person. — Fla. Stat. sec. 119.01(1) (1995) So what I'm saying is: Florida is not more weird and messed up than every other place. The entire world is, in fact, a weird hellscape of cannibalization and disembowelment, but we don't hear about it because their arrest record laws are a lot stricter. The more you know, right!? Share whatever you learned today in this thread. I feel like I got it started off with a bang, but feel free to post things that won't horrify everybody else to their core. Link to comment
SneezyHolmes
Today I learned that things that cause most people to cringe don't affect me but the little, minor things can make me wig the hell out. Oh and fried chicken plus taco bell is a good combo! Link to comment
Garnet
I went hiking with the ex today (because we are still friends and it is still 95% okay). He used to live in Alaska and told me about the Akutan Zero during WWII. Not quite as fun as Drunk History, but still interesting Link to comment

March Hare
I learned to discern the gist of a PREPOSTEROUSLY CONVOLUTED text by Schleiermacher. I feel so proud of myself. It only took me three days. >.< Link to comment

Icarus Rex
I learned that part of Radiohead plays part of the Weird Sisters in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I was buying groceries with headphones resting around my neck, and my cashier said, "If you don't mind my asking, what are you listening to?" and then laid some delightful trivia on me. :0I have to wonder if this guy was just saturated with film/music trivia, poised and ready with a fun fact for any answer I gave. There's a nice-sounding, potential urban legend that he vowed never to scream at anyone again, after retiring. What a backstory. Link to comment
RediChalyn
Today I learned the multiple ways of taking someone's pulse and how to measure respiration. I also learned that my classmates panic very easily because even after I explained at the beginning of class that my vital signs are very unusual but it's normal for me, each of them that took my vitals got very nervous and looked at me like I was about to have a heart attack. SexualOddity
Today I learned that there is no appeal against a Harassment Warning in the UK. Watch out UK Citizens! (You can still make a compaint to the Police and Crime Comissionner) Link to comment
count tiszula
Today I learnt that Lady Margaret Beaufort's last husband the King of Man really was Constable of the Tower in 1485; so clearly murdered the Princes. Yes, thanks Wikipedia. Link to comment

Icarus Rex
Today, I learned about tetrachromacy (in humans, the condition of possessing a fourth color receptor which allows you to see roughly one HUNDRED million colors-- as opposed to the average, measly ten mil.)I think a lot about how the world must look to animals who perceive more colors than we do. It's interesting to try to visualize something that is totally impossible to visualize, and even more interesting to know that it's NOT impossible to all humans! :0 (Cue dozens of phony online tests to the tune of, "ARE YOU A SUPER-SPECIAL TETROCHROMAT?", while this research is still in the works, but still.)Anyway, I'll go slam myself in a locker-- no need to get up.
