MaiMai Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 *waves* It's been a while since I've really contributed many stories, but I wanted to jump back in! I've got a couple of OCs who I'm a little in love with writing at the moment. I wrote this particular story a few months ago, but it was the first time I had written the two of them, and I sort of wanted to start off with the first thing! I'd like to post more about them, though~! Quick bit of background: Jack is a Philosophy student, and Eira is a Law student. They met after Jack accidentally sat down in the wrong lecture and wound up stuck in Eira's two hour contract law lecture (because he's just that smooth ). At the point when this story is written, they're both in their second year and around 20, and sharing a flat together. They fight a lot, but they're best friends really. Also, this isn't really essential to their stories though it's emphasised more in this first one, but Eira also happens to be a weather witch. Warning for language at one point! Raindrops Neither of them were the quietest of people to live with. That was partially why they had chosen to live together: so that they could exist in a mutual state of music and laughter, good-morning shouts from the top of the stairs and welcome-home yells from the kitchen to the hallway. Most of the time, their noisiness had an underlying current of peace and affability. Their screams were playful and their shrieks friendly overall. The inherent loudness of both of them, though, meant that it was easy to fight. Neither of them shied from giving their opinions to the other, loudly and obnoxiously if necessary. This morning was one of those mornings: tensions were running high, aggravated by the threat of thunder in the air, tense and giving way all too easily to arguments. Even trivial ones, such as the one they passed back and forth between them now, spitting retorts like insults and insulting with the long-suffering affection of an old married couple. “I don’t understand why you have to be so stubborn about this! For god sake, Jack, just put on the stupid coat!” Eira brandished a jacket at him. Her movement was exasperated and lacked any real conviction; it was obvious that she had been fighting this particular battle for a frustratingly long time. “I’m a big boy, Eira. I think a twenty year old can decide for himself whether to take a jacket or not, okay?” “You may be twenty, but I’ve lived with you for nearly a year now. I know how bloody irresponsible-” “Me irresponsible?! Who left the oven on and almost burned the house down? Who accidentally put foil in the microwave and only narrowly avoided setting fire to it?!” Their eyes bored into each other with sharp electricity, brown on grey. Jack drummed his right foot against the floor, coughed from the strain of arguing; Eira tapped her left hand impatiently against the top of her thigh, her eyes narrowing at Jack’s latest slight on her character. “You’re seriously bringing those things up?! I never did either of those things again, may I just remind you!” “Well I never even did them once, and you’re questioning my responsibility?!” Eira sighed heavily, raking her fingers through her hair. It was still early morning, and her plait was already beginning to unravel. “Jack. Stop being a pain in the ass and wear the coat. It’s barely five degrees out there, it looks like there’s going to be a storm. It won’t be any fun walking back from uni soaked wet and frozen-” “Stop mothering me,” Jack shot back, interrupting her. “I’ll be late to my seminar if I don’t leave now. Fight more later, yeah?” He pushed past Eira to grab his keys, yanking none-too-gently on the end of her hair as he went, to which she retaliated with a poke to his ribs. “Fine. Later.” The door slammed shut behind him, and she threw herself onto the sofa with a huff. They had a lot of fights that they intended to finish later in the day, but never did. Usually, the length of a seminar or lecture, and the temporary absence of the other’s company that accompanied it, was enough for them both to cool down. This time felt a little different, though. Sure, they often had stupid arguments – but this time, Jack was just being completely unreasonable. Eira gritted her teeth even as she thought about it. The whole thing had sprung up so quickly, and he had been so unfailingly irritable. It was almost as if he had been looking for a fight. “Arghhh!” She pushed herself back up, crossing her legs, and started to think. The storm was still an hour or two away – she could feel it in the way the air hung, heavy and fizzing with the subdued energy of delayed lightning. With things as they were, Jack would just miss the storm on his way there, maybe be caught in it on his way back. Unless someone intervened, that was. Eira wasn’t being malicious, she swore. She just wanted to piss him off a bit. And what better way to do that than nudge the storm forward an hour or two, and ruin his perfectly straightened hair, just in time for him to show up to his seminar? Her expression lapsed into one of thoughtful contemplation, at once vacant and absorbed. If she could just…push it forward…a little… The storm crashed into life around the house, the first flash of lightning flickering through the window. Seconds later, and the rain began to patter on the roof, increasing in velocity until it became a drumming. She smiled mildly and stood up, stretched, and pushed away any doubts she might have had about using her influence over the weather quite so whimsically. No doubt her family would have had something to say about it, and for another thing, it wasn’t as though there was much call for weather witches, these days. The only purpose it really served for her was facilitating the occasional amusement and looking impressive on her CV. Her infuriation dropped away, soothed by both the blossoming storm and the satisfaction of her (admittedly petty, but none the less satisfying) retribution. With a smile, Eira settled down to work on a particularly riveting essay on the subject of compensatory remedies in the private law sector. By the time Jack returned – she had an empty timetable today, whilst he had to drag himself in for a two hour seminar and a double lecture – she had accumulated a collection of empty, tea-stained mugs around her, and was sipping at yet another cup of tea as she edited. Ordinarily, they would yell from the doorway, to make the other aware of their presence. Now, all Eira heard was the opening of the door, the brief rush of the rain, and the clack of the door closing again. Huh. He must have been really pissed off with her. Jack might have been well capable of being a pain, but he didn’t usually sulk. “…huh’etsSHH!” She jumped, fingers clashing against her keyboard. The blessing was out of her mouth before she could stop herself. “Bless you!” “Mmghh.” Jack appeared in the lounge, drops of rain trickling down his wrist as he rubbed the back of a hand against his nose. “Thanks, I guess.” “You look like shit,” she pointed out, raising an eyebrow at him. Jack merely sighed, brushing his dark curls away from his eyes. As she had predicted, the storm had undone all of his precious grooming. “You say that like it had nothing to do with you,” he grumbled, dumping his bag on the dining table. Eira had expecting him to be more angry with her; right now he just sounded tired more than anything. “Okay, maybe it had a little to do with me,” she agreed with a cheeky half-grin. “But have you learnt your lesson about wearing a coat, now?” “Eira, forget the coat, p-huh…please-huh’TSSHh!” He rushed the final word, tripping over the pronunciation in his haste to get it out. “Bless you!” Eira repeated, although she was beginning to look at Jack a little more intently, favouring watching him rather than her word count. Jack gave no response except a few muffled coughs as he kicked his shoes off. “Are you okay?” she asked, surprising herself with the softness in her voice. She had been fully expecting to pick up the argument back off where they left off; she hadn’t anticipated actually feeling sorry for him. “Yeah. Yeah, whatever,” Jack shrugged her off, only to cave seconds later under her gaze, “I’m a little sick, maybe. Don’t worry about it.” “But…you’re telling me you’re sick, and you let me make it rain on you?” “Hey, don’t put this on me. How was I supposed to know you were going to do that? That’s all down to you.” Jack sat down at the opposite end of the sofa, only to sneeze yet again against a damp sleeve. “huh-etSHH!” “Bless you.” There was guilt, now, slipping into Eira’s tone. “I’m, uh…” She couldn’t quite bring herself to apologise. “Do you want a cup of tea? Hot chocolate?” “Hot chocolate would be wonderful,” Jack smiled mildly, “And I hope you know this means you have to play servant to me for the whole time that I’m sick. You owe me that much, at least.” “Ugh, fine.” Jack was slightly more conscientious about wearing a coat after that, though, much to Eira’s satisfaction. And Eira stopped messing around with the weather to spite people…well. For a week or two, at least.
Nas Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Omg, MaiMai!! This was so adorable. <3 I liked how you foreshadowed his cold earlier on. Your OCs have such a cool dynamic, and your spellings are so hot. I'd love it if you decided to post more things about these two!
v a n i l l a Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 This was LOVELY. And my friend and I are EXACTLY like Jack and Eira, which made this all the more interesting LOL. I agree, I would LOVE to see more! Perhaps some denial from Jack.... .
Femilloween77 Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 This story was adorable <3 I would love to read more as well ! Thank you for sharing :-)
Sophie<3 Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 So, umm, you already know that my love for these two knows no bounds. And I also already told you that I love this particular story, but I reread it just now, and yeah, the statements holds true. Sick Jack absolutely slays me in the best possible way! I really love Eira so much, too, though! Just... the two of them together. They really have my favorite kind of dynamic! So, yes. They're perfect. Never stop writing them.
