Kaze Wo Hiku Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 (edited) Posting this since I feel it's relevant to many of our members and also I'd like to get the word of it out. There's a new manga out called Echoes by mangaka Ayumi, which features a transgender protagonist. To my knowledge this is the first ever this has happened. Many manga/anime have "trap" characters but rarely as a lead and never actually using the word. Echoes won Takarajimasha publishings 7th Kono Manga ga Sugoi! (This Manga is awesome) award. It's not translated into English yet, hopefully someone will license it. Crunchyroll article featuring cover art, manga art and summary. The story is based on the author's experiences. Honestly I've been an anime/manga fan for years and this along with the success of Yuri!! On Ice, I finally think we'll be seeing more stuff targeted to the LBGT community and honestly it's about time. Edited January 5, 2017 by Kaze wo Hiku
LeapYearKisses Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Ooh! I hope someone picks this up to translate it! I love sports manga and I would be psyched to read one with a trans protagonist, especially if FTM (which is what the summary seems to suggest) because FTM characters are even more underrepresented. If you or anyone else is interested, though, I found a masterpost here of other series featuring trans protagonists, seemingly most MTF. Some of them I have heard of before, but I haven't read them and so this is not a recommendation from me but a link to a resource. The author of the masterpost does describe each series and gives a small review, including touching on themes that could be triggering in each one and why it does or does not seem to be fair to the trans character(s). Not on the list is the series Dream Saga which is an incredibly cutesy kid-aimed manga about a cast of schoolchildren who go to the world of Takamagahara (kind of like heaven in Japanese mythology depending on the author's interpretation) and have an RPG-like adventure. One of side characters is a girl in Takamagahara and not in the real world, and it's treated well by the others if I recall correctly. I last read the series when I was like 15 and never finished it, but it was adorable.
