I love Alan Rickman Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 (edited) I was sitting browsing this forum in my bedroom and decided to do some quiet fake sneezing just for fun. Right after the first fake sneeze, which was surprisingly convincing and had a "Hiht'shiew!" sound to it, I felt an overwhelming tickle in my nose. My breath hitched, and I quickly sneezed a single, slightly high-pitched, half-stifled "Hiht-chxt!" into my wrist. I immediately came to write this right after, thus I am still sniffly as I type this, and I should probably blow my nose. This made me think: I've heard before that fake sneezing can bring on a real sneeze, but I've tried in the past, and it just seemed to work now. I'm wondering if it's because it was more convincing and "sudden" to my brain. What are your thoughts? I hoped you liked this short little ob. I'll update here if anything like this happens again if I decide to fake sneeze once more (which I do quite a lot in private ) Edited January 28, 2017 by I love Alan Rickman

I've tried fake sneezing before, and even if I'm in the mood for it, I can't seem to do it authentically. Do you have any pointers for a good fake sneeze?
billythesneezer Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 I've never heard of fake sneezing leading to real sneezing before, but I believe it! On a related note, I find I usually need to sneeze anytime I type this forum's address into my browser - I think it might be the same issue of priming your brain/nose to want to sneeze!
Sneezarifiic Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 Fake sneezing never works for me. But I'm glad it works for you!! Bless you!

Do you have any pointers for a good fake sneeze? Oh goodness, this is hard to describe. I think it really comes with the more you do it as well as imagining how a sneeze sounds. If you can think carefully how a sneeze sounds (for example, you could think of your own), you can discover the keys to creating the sound. I've realized that if you start with a sound like "Hiht" or "Hah" and then kind of cough and exhale sharply at the same time while giving a "shh," "chh," "shiew," or whatever sound for the end of the sneeze, it will give a more realistic sound to it. At least I think that's what it is. I've been fake sneezing by myself for years now, so it's kind of difficult to realize what I'm doing as I do it. I think I also most of the time fake sneeze with my mouth and not my nose. If depends what type of sound I want it to be. I think my best general tip would have to be to just mainly think of how the sneeze sounds and replicate it as best as you can, practicing whenever. That's the only one I'm completely sure about. Of course, either way, you'd have to make a pre-sneeze face, flare your nostrils a bit (if possible), and hitch before, as well as follow through with closing the eyes, pitching forward, and "sneezing" into your wrist, over your shoulder, into a tissue, etc. 2 hours ago, billythesneezer said: On a related note, I find I usually need to sneeze anytime I type this forum's address into my browser This has happened quite a few times to me as well! Usually if I'm scrolling through this forum or going through/typing one of my sneezefics, I'll sneeze. If it's with one of my sneezefics, it'll usually hilariously be right before the character sneezes. It's pretty interesting. 2 hours ago, Sneezarifiic said: Fake sneezing never works for me. Glad it helped. I was a bit nervous I messed it up.
