uniquelyme
BE AWARE: THIS CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS ABOUT THE NEW STAR WARS MOVIE!! The scenario for this fic is pretty unrealistic so I apologize in advance for the kinda wonky character interactions. Summary: Set a month after The Force Awakens, a sniffly Kylo Ren finds himself bridged by the Force to Rey once again. Kylo felt it before she saw her. He could feel Rey’s presence. And then there she was- sitting before him; their minds connected through a bridge in the Force. Neither spoke for a moment; both staring. The atmosphere was so tense you could almost feel it, like static running through the air. It was Rey who broke the silence. “But- Snoke is dead. This is impossible. Are you doing this?” Kylo shook his head. Despite their history, the look in his eyes made her believe him. “And you're not?” He asked. “Of course not.” It had been almost a month since the two had last seen each other in Snokes’ vessel. Seeing Rey again since their duel made Kylo feel uneasy. The experience seemed surreal. He wasn't sure whether to laugh. There was one question that had been plaguing his mind that he now had the opportunity to ask. “Why did you let me live?” Rey held his gaze without speaking. Kylo could tell that he already knew the answer to his own question. She had seen the conflict within him, and she believed in his light. He had never met someone who could level him with their eyes the way she could. Not even Snoke. He wondered if she was looking within him even now. The thought made him feel vulnerable- naked. He looked away. Bringing an ungloved hand up, he rubbed at his nose and sniffled. He had only barely noticed that his nose had been running that day but suddenly he was acutely aware. It didn't help him feel any less vulnerable. Rey cut in, “Do you think the force is linking us?” Kylo thought for a moment. “I can’t imagine why. I’ve always understood it to be a passive connector; not a sort of destiny.” Rey nodded. She was surprised that Kylo wasn't using this opportunity to pry at her into telling him the Resistances whereabouts. Kylo knew there was no use. Rey wouldn't tell him a thing. At this moment he found himself more interested in her. The thought of asking her how she was doing felt all too odd. They were certainly not friends, yet, somehow already far more than that. His train of thought was interrupted by a fit of harsh coughing. He pressed his knuckles to his nose to stop it from dripping. Quickly he turned his head and, “HUUPPTTTCCHH’eew!” “Bless you.” Kylo could feel himself flush with embarrassment. Before he could say anything- “HAATTCHHHH’eeww! HUPPTCHHHH!” He clamped his hand over his nose tightly. Why do they have to always come in threes? “Are you ill?” Surprised by the sound of genuine concern in Rey’s voice, Kylo chuckled slightly. “I feel like I’m catching a cold.” Rey bit her lip, looking a bit confused. “For some reason I find it difficult to picture the mighty Kylo Ren catching a chill.” This made Kylo laugh harder. His laughter quickly turned into a fit of coughing. “The mighty Kylo Ren? Is that what you think of me?” It was Rey’s turn to blush. Kylo pretended not to notice. His face returned to its somber state. “Perhaps I’m becoming ill from all my brooding around.” Rey chuckled. She couldn't tell if he was joking. “Is that what you do all day?” Kylo’s serious expression broke again to a smile that looked as if it hadn't been seen in a very long time. “No. But I know thats what you think I do all day.” He looked as if he was about to say something but his breath started to hitch. His eyes became bleary. He pinched his nose with one hand and brought the other one to help cover- “HEETTCHHHHH’uuh! EETCHHHH’eew!” His breath hitched again and he tilted his head back, eyes squinting and lips slightly agape. But the sneeze didn't come. He sighed, and sniffled wetly, rubbing his now-pink nose again. “Bless you. You sound awful.” “Thanks. I swear I wasn't doing nearly as poorly before you popped up.” He winced slightly, hoping that his comment didn't sound rude. Rey didn't seem to notice. “Is there a med-bay that you should be going to?” “There’s no need; its just a cold.” Kylo coughed again, this time into his sleeve. The truth was that he’d like nothing more than to go to the med-bay and get some pills that would cure him in minutes. However, there was no way he was about to let his crew see him sick like this. He felt like a sniffling pathetic mess rather than a powerful knight of Ren. The thought of it mortified him. For some reason, that he himself had yet to figure out, being in his present condition in front of Rey didn't embarrass him nearly as much as it should of. He felt oddly comfortable with her. Kylo shivered slightly. “Are you running a temperature?” Rey’s voice was gentle. Kylo could feel himself blushing again and tried to chuckle. Rey reached out towards him with one hand, slowly. “May I?” They had touched once before, hand-to-hand, proving that it was possible to come in physical contact through the Force. Kylo nodded once, trying to swallow the tightness in his throat. He felt Rey’s cool hand rest on his forehead. Her eyebrows knitted in concern. His pulse quickened as she moved her hand down to feel each cheek with the back of her hand. “You’re burning up.” She frowned. He continued to stare. “You should get some rest.” Kylo snapped back to attention. “Yes-“ His voice came out raspy. Clearing his throat, he tried again. “Yes, I think that would be best.” Rey was trying to figure out how to break the Force link when- “HETTCHHHHH-uuh!” -the sneeze ended it. Kylo sat in his chamber, feeling more alone than usual. As he settled in to sleep, he couldn't help but comfort himself with the thought of Rey’s gentle voice, playing back through his thoughts. fickle_tickle
Aww this is adorable!! I love me some Kylo Ren! The nose on that man is sexy as all get out! I really like the idea of Rey popping in at inopportune, vulnerable moments. I hope you continue with this, and that he gets worse before he gets better Link to comment
Jelloicious
This is really sweet. It interrupts my diligent efforts to write Kylo off as a whiny man-child. The interaction between Rey and Kylo is very believable. More? Link to comment
uniquelyme
Kylo opened his eyes. What time was it? As he strained to sit up he could feel the pressure in his head. His nose was uncomfortably congested and his throat felt raw and painful. It appeared that sleeping hadn't been the cure-all as he had hoped. Looking at the digital clock on the wall he realized that the rest of the crew had begun their work an hour ago. He swung his feet over the side of the bed and felt his stomach swing with them. His body ached as he began to dress himself. Staring into the bathroom mirror, Kylo realized that he looked just as bad as he felt. His hair was a sweaty and disheveled mess, his eyes watery, and his nose pink and chapped. “HEEXXXTTCHHH’uh!!” He sneezed, bracing his arms against the sink. With barely enough time to take a breath Kylo lurched forward, “HAAPPTTCHHHH’eew! HATTTTCHHH’eew!” He paused for a moment to catch his breath. He brought a hand to his face and pulled it away, trailing strings of mucus on his fingers. He was a mess. Kylo washed his face at the sink and used a cloth to wipe off the mirror which had caught the brunt of his uncovered sneezes. For a moment he regretted destroying his helmet. At least from behind its shield he could command without any prying crew members noticing his illness. There was no way he could hide this. Kylo ran his fingers through his hair, trying to make his waves fall in a slightly more dignified manner. Clearing his throat, he approached the communication panel on the wall of his cabin. Within moments, the holographic face of General Hux appeared in front of him. It appeared that in Kylo’s brief absence, the general had taken to sitting in the command seat on the bridge. Kylo didn't have the energy to care. “Supreme Leader,” Hux addressed Kylo. Kylo tried to look as stern and competent as possible. Just as he opened his mouth to speak, he felt a tickle building in the back of his nose. “Hux, you will take command today. I have other matters to att- attend.” He managed to get out, trying to keep his eyes from fluttering shut. It was clear that the general was delighted to hear this as he didn't so much as bother to ask Kylo the reason behind his absence. “Of course, Supreme Leader.” Kylo was just about to cut off the communication when “HAPPPTCHHHHHH’eehh!” He turned away from the panel, doubling over and sneezing into his elbow. Hux’s eyes widened in surprise. “Uh- b-bless you Supreme Leader.” Kylo didn't bother to respond and quickly closed the communication. Dammit. He set about changing into more comfortable attire and slid back into bed. At least he could get some work done from his chambers. He used the control panel to pull up a holographic screen from which he could take a look at the planetary systems being combed in search of the Resistance. Suddenly he felt a tugging at his consciousness. Again? Twice in two days? The image of Rey appeared before him, their minds once again linked. She was standing, and, although he could not see her surroundings, he noticed wisps of her hair blowing in the wind. She must be outside. Rei looked stuck in thought. “Again?” “Strange isn't it?” Kylo was just as perplexed. “Can you see my surroundings? I still can’t see yours.” “No, only that you're lying down. I can see your clothing; your pajamas I’m guessing?” Kylo smiled. “Yes, just the underclothing layer of uniforms; but I suppose you could call them my pajamas.” He sniffled wetly. “Excuse me.” He leaned over to grab a roll of tissue he had brought to the bedside. Embarrassing as it was blowing his nose at the moment he’d much rather have that than having snot run down his face. “Still not well then?” Rey was leaning on her staff. “Worse I’m afraid.” Kylo continued to smile slightly. “Do First Order take sick days?” Rey raised her eyebrow. Kylo paused. “Not officially.” “Playing hooky then?” “I guess you could say that.” Kylo’s chuckle turned into a throaty cough that left his breathing labored. He winced and pressed a hand against his chest. “Have you tried tea?” Rey piped in almost too cheerily. “What?” Kylo squinted at her. “Tea. It’ll soothe your throat and hopefully help with your cough.” To be honest tea sounded nice. Come to think of it, Kylo hadn't had anything to eat or drink since he had woken up. Kylo swiped a hand to pull up the holographic mess hall system. “I’ll take your advice on that.” He pressed a few commands in and within moments a cup of tea and some toast rolled into his room on a robot server. Rey tried to hide the fact that she was impressed. Kylo feigned surprise. “Have you never seen one of these?” “No. I’ve always gotten food the old fashioned way; standing up to go get it.” Kylo nodded and took a sip of the tea. It was exceedingly hot and he hoped that Rey hadn't seen him flinch as it burnt his tongue. As he was looking for a spot to set the mug down he felt a tingling sensation in his nose. His eyes fluttered shut and his breath began to hitch. His nostrils flared slightly. He gripped the cup of tea tightly as- “AAAATTTCHHHH’uh!” Kylo briefly opened his eyes, looking slightly desperate as he held the mug of steaming liquid. “EEETTTSHHHHHH’ew!! Rey winced. Watching him trying not to spill tea on himself while being overtaken by a fit of sneezing made Kylo look oddly human. Surprisingly not pathetic, just real. “HAPpttghh!” Kylo clamped a hand over his nose to hold in the final sneeze. Finally, he set the tea down on the bedside table, looking utterly exhausted. A tear was forming at the brim of his eye, which he wiped away with an open palm. He looked towards Rey, who looked genuinely concerned. “Bless you. You shouldn't hold those in.” Kylo chuckled, coughing again into his fist. “Are you still running a temperature?” Kylo paused for a minute. Finally, “You tell me.” He leaned in slightly. The gesture surprised even him and he felt his cheeks flush red. Rey didn't hesitate to slowly lean in. Kylo closed his eyes. He felt her cool hand resting on his forehead. It made him shiver slightly. The hand moved down, seeming to caress both cheeks. Rey frowned, “You’re not as hot as you were yesterday, but you still have a temperature.” Kylo didn't respond. He was too busy sitting with his mouth slightly agape, head tilted towards the ceiling. Suddenly he jerked forward, barely covering his- “ATTCHHHHHH’eehh!” He quickly brought the blanket up, clutching it to his nose with one hand. “ETTTCHHHHH’uh! HAPPPTCHHH’eew!” The last two sneezes were muffled in the blanket. “Excuse me.” He said hoarsely. Rey was wiping her hand on her pants. Kylo’s eyes widened, giving away his horror. “Did I- Did I get any on you?” “A bit. Bless you.” Kylo hoped that the blushing of his cheeks looked like symptoms of fever. “I apologize. The Force link- I didn’t-“ Rey chuckled. “Its alright, you couldn't help it.” Although the statement was true, it made Kylo feel all the more vulnerable. He was able to harness the power of the force to bend others to his will yet he couldn't control a simple sneeze. Link to comment

uniquelyme
UPDATE: The connection ended abruptly as it began; leaving Kylo Ren staring blankly ahead at his now-empty bedchambers. He collapsed back against his pillows, sulking. He had enjoyed the temporary company. The sore throat and stuffy nose that he had nearly forgotten about were now making themselves painfully well known. For the next several hours, Kylo tossed and turned in bed. Alternating between coughing, sneezing, and occasionally a combination of the two at once, Kylo wasn't getting much work done. Now on his third cup of tea, he sipped carefully as he poured over the holographic planetary charts. He squinted to concentrate. The pounding in his temples made it hard for him to think. His eyes were sore and his cheeks flushed with fever. Breathing through his mouth only, Kylo barely had time to feel the impending sneeze creeping closer. “HURRRUUSHHHH’uhhh!’ He sneezed, feeling a trail of snot shoot down his lip. He tried to open his eyes but they fought to flutter shut. ‘HAATTCHHHH’! AATTCHHHH’uh!” The force of his last sneezed sent him lurching forward. Eyes still shut, he didn't see the cup of steaming tea tip forward, but he definitely felt it. Kylo gasped slightly as the burning liquid poured down his arms and into his lap. He threw the cup to the floor, hearing shatter into pieces. Using the blanket to dab away as much tea as possible, he felt his scalded skin sting from beneath his clothing. He had enough of this damn cold. He had to do something about it. The automatic doors of Kylo Ren’s cabin slid open suddenly as a now-fully-uniformed Ren marched swiftly down the hall. The two stormtroopers said nothing as their Supreme Leader passed, but gave each other a glance once he was out of sight. Kylo took the elevator down to the lower decks, making his way towards the MedBay. His footsteps echoed in the stark hallways and as he made his way past the Launch Bay he paused, tilting his head up towards the florescent ceiling lighting. He braced himself against the wall with one gloved hand while the other reached up to clamp over his nose and mouth. “HERRUPPHHH’t! HMMMPPTCHhh!- HMMPPHTCHHHEew!” The last sneeze was only partially stifled. “Bless you, Supreme Leader Ren.” Came a hesitant voice from behind.” Kylo pinched his nose quickly to hopefully remove any mucus that may have escaped. He spun around to see a flustered-looking General Hux standing at the entrance of the Launch Bay with several stormtrooper escorts. Kylo tried to look as dignified as he could despite his pink nose and feverish sheen. “What are you doing here, General? I thought I instructed you to command from the bridge.” “Y-yes, Supreme Leader.” Hux stammered, “I was merely inspecting the new fleet of fighters that you ordered to be built. They just finished the prototype model and I assure you the design is impeccable-“ “Very well.” Kylo could feel his nose start to run and he tried not to sniffle but instead made a soft, strange squelching sound. Hux pretended not to notice. “I take it then that you are finished with your- uh- tasks for today, then? Am I relieved of command?” “You are relieved of command when I tell you you are relieved of command.” Kylo snapped. “Yes, Supreme Leader.” Hux did not keep Ren’s gaze. By the time he looked back up, the Knight of Ren was already storming around the corner. Kylo took a moment to catch his breath once he was safely out of view. He sniffled wetly and coughed into his gloved fist. His chest was beginning to get congested, and he could feel a slight rattling when he breathed. At last, the MedBay doors came into view. Kylo walked through the automatic doors and didn't bother to stop at the intake droid to check himself in. He breathed a sigh of relief when he noticed that the MedBay was nearly empty. A medical droid greeted him. “Hello, Supreme Leader Ren.” Its mechanical voice hummed. “Please take a seat on the exam bed.” The robot jerkily gestured to the padded counter nearby. As Kylo sat he could feel himself blushing. He shouldn't be embarrassed. It was just a droid after all, not a real person. Still, sitting on an papered exam table with the smell of rubbing alcohol in the air, reminded him of going to the doctors as a child. He could remember crying and holding his mother’s hand when the doctor would lean in to give him a vaccination. The medical droid interrupted his train of thought. “What seems to be the problem?” The droid sputtered out. “I’b ill.” Kylo said, not wishing to elaborate further with his voice sounding like he was underwater. The droid paused, processing. “I see. What are your symptoms?” Kylo swallowed. “Sore throat, fever, headache, body-aches, congestion, coughing, and sneezing.” He said, uncomfortably. “Remain still while I scan you.” The droid’s eye’s lit up for a moment as it quickly ran its gaze over Kylo. “Your body temperature is 101.2 degrees Fahrenheit. Chest is congested. Heart rate is slightly elevated. Blood pressure is normal. Lymph nodes are slightly swollen. Diagnosis: You have a Rhinovirus Infection commonly known as a cold or flu. Treatment options include: rest, dietary restriction, hydration, and immune-booster injection. Medication for cough, fever, aches, and congestion, will reduce severity of symptoms but will not cure the ailment. Would you like-“ “Give me whatever will make me better quickest.” Kylo interjected. “Understood.” The robot stood still as it filled the prescriptions. A small droid, rolled over bearing a tray of medications. The medical droid busied itself preparing the doses. It turned back to Kylo as he pitched forward. “HUPPTCHHHHHew!! HMMPPHHhuh! EETCHHHHHew!” Kylo slowly stood upright, keeping his fingertips pressed against his nostrils. The robot dispensed a tissue and handed it to him. Kylo snatched it with his free hand and blew his nose with a loud honk. One by one, the droid handed him various pills and syrups to take with water. He took the pills down easily but shuddered slightly at the taste of the thick chalky syrup. Once he had made his way through the buffet of medication, he turned to look at the droid. Kylo’s eyes widened slightly. The robot was now holding a large syringe. Even as an adult, he hated needles. He tried to calm his breathing as the droid rolled up his sleeve. He turned his head away. As he felt a cold burst on skin, he winced and inhaled sharply. “I am only applying antiseptic spray.” The robot said. Kylo swore that if that robot was human its tone would have been mocking him. “Isn’t there a way I can take this medication orally?” He snapped. “This immune booster is only available in the form of an injection. Am I correct that you would like the treatment which promises the quickest recuperation rate?” “Yes.” Kylo turned his head away once again. He gritted his teeth as the needle pierced his skin. Within a moment it was over and a small silicone patch covered the spot, like a bandaid. Kylo inhaled deeply. He hadn't realized that he had been holding his breath. “Your treatment is complete.” The droid hummed. “Thank you.” Kylo said, standing. The droid dispensed a slip of what appeared to be paper from a slot in its metal casing. “Would you like a sticker?” The sticker was of a smiling porg with a bandaid on its head. The words read, ‘I was brave for the doctor’. Walking out of the MedBay, Kylo hurried up to his room. He didn't want to have another run in with a colleague in the hallway. Returning to his pajamas, Kylo plopped back in bed. He was already starting to feel sleepy. He closed his eyes, and within moments he was fast asleep. Thanks for reading my weird fluff! I think I can do one or two more parts if anyone is still interested. Link to comment

uniquelyme
Here’s a rather late update. XD Kylo sat in bed wolfing down the oatmeal and toast that he had ordered via droid. His appetite had come back marking a sure sign of recovery. His headache and fever had subsided, but his congestion and cough had decided to persist. He was expected on the bridge in fifteen minutes. He lifted up the bowl to scrape the last bits of oatmeal into his mouth. As he did so, he felt a tickle growing in his nose. Kylo panicked for a brief moment. With his mouth full of oatmeal, he quickly clamped a hand over his nose. “MMPTFFF!” He tried to swallow quickly before he gasped in air again and- “HMMPFHH!” His cheeks puffed up as he tried to keep his lips pressed tightly shut. “PFFFTCHHH!” He pulled his hand away from his face, revealing a palm sticky with snot and oatmeal. Perhaps this was a sign that he should take one more day to rest. He could feel his heart sink. Being unable to fulfill his duties as commander was embarrassing. However, he reasoned to himself, having his officers see the him as sniffly sneezy mess was far more humiliating. He cleaned himself up in the bathroom and got dressed. “General Hux,” Kylo spoke into the telegraphic communication. The General’s face appeared before him. “Supreme Leader Ren, are you feeling better?” Kylo could feel his cheeks grow warm. He had hoped that Hux had been too busy relishing his spot of command to noticed Ren’s illness. If he could, he would have force choked Hux right through the holographic screen. Hux’s eyes widened as he noticed his slip. “Er- I mean- Will you be returning to command today?” “No, I have work to do. Tomorrow I will relieve you of command.” “Very well, Supreme Leader.” Hux quickly closed the communication before any more damage could be done. Dammit. Kylo’s embarrassment quickly turned into frustration He swiped the empty oatmeal bowl off the table and watched it shatter into pieces. He ran his fingers through his hair and took a breath. It was easy to let his temper get the best of him. Suddenly, he knew he wasn't there alone. “Are you alright?” The voice was gentle and almost hoarse. Kylo spun around to see Rey, sitting down, as if she was there in his chambers. “Yes, I’m fine.” The words came out shakier than Kylo had intended. As he glanced Rey over he noticed that her nose and cheeks were tinged pink and her eyes were a little watery. “Are you alright?” He repeated her question back. Rey’s smile looked tired. “Yes, fine. Just a little under the weather.” She winced slightly as she swallowed. Instantly Kylo felt a pang of guilt. “I didn't get you sick did I?” “I didn't think it would be possible.” Rey chuckled. Her laughter quickly turned into a fit of deep coughs that left her rubbing her chest. “Where are you?” Kylo asked. Rey’s shot back an incredulous look. “You know I can’t tell you that.” “No, I mean, are you in bed? You should be in bed.” Rey’s expression melted into a slight smile. “Yes, I’m sitting in bed.” “Good.” Kylo bit his lower lip, thinking. “Do you have anything you can take for that- medicine or something?” “I’ll be fine.” Rey’s eyes fluttered shut. She pressed the back of her fingers against her nose. She shook her head slightly, trying to fight off the torturous tickle. Suddenly she gasped- “KSHHHeew!” She brought up a handkerchief to pinch and dab at her nose with. “Bless you.” Kylo chuckled. Rey’s eyebrow arched. “Its cute when you sneeze.” Kylo continued to smile. “Like a- an Earth kitten.” Rey chuckled. “Well how about you? Yours sounds like it could rupture someones eardrums; its more of a throaty scream really.” Kylo laughed harder than he had in a long time. “Are you feeling better then?” Rey asked. “Yes, much- well, I did sneeze out oatmeal this morning.” It was Rey’s turn to laugh. “I really can’t picture it.” Kylo smiled sheepishly. “Sort of like- achoo!” He pantomimed sneezing into his hand. Rey snorted. “No, I mean I couldn't picture you doing that.” “Why not?” “You don’t seem very-“ She searched for the right word “-clumsy?” “I hide it very well.” He looked quite different when he was smiling- it was a nice change. Rey laughed until it caused her to start coughing again. Kylo winced at the sound of it. Rey punctuated her fit with a sneeze. “EhhhKSHHHew!” She blew her nose into her handkerchief as discretely as she could and shivered. Kylo’s eyebrows knitted together. “Bless you. You look like you have a fever.” Rey shrugged. “I’m okay.” Slowly, Kylo raised his open palm and leaned in. Rey pulled away. “Be still.” Kylo ordered. His voice was firm yet gentle. He pressed his palm against her forehead. “You’re much too warm. Have you been taking in liquids?” Rey turned her head away. “No offense but I doubt you have much experience nursing colds.” “I was a kid once; I’ve had Bantha noodle soup and stayed home from academy playing video games just like all the other kids in the galaxy.” Rey nodded. Her gaze didn't meet his eyes. “Then your childhood was more normal than mine.” Kylo’s expression turned serious. “Fill a bowl with cold water and grab a wash cloth.” Rey didn’t move for a moment, then cocking her head slightly, she stood to comply without quite knowing why she listened. She wavered slightly on her feet. “Slowly-“ Kylo leaned forward, as if he’d be able to catch her should she fall. Rey returned with a bowl of water and a cloth, as instructed. She leaned back on her pillows. Kylo took a breath to focus himself. He leaned in and picked up the cloth. Dunking it in the water, he rung it out a few times. Leaning forward, He placed it on her forehead. He breathed out in relief. If he had to guess, he would've assumed that much contact between planes to be impossible. Rey was smiling slightly, eyes closed. “Why are you taking care of me? Do you pity me?” She asked without opening her eyes. “I understand you.” Kylo answered finally. “Do promise you’ll eat something when you wake up? I’ll see if I can somehow bridge us tomorrow to check in on you.” Rey just nodded slightly. It was clear that she was dozing off. Kylo could feel the force link dissipating. As a last thought, he reached to his side table and removed an item, leaning forward to leave it in Rey’s relaxed hand. It was a sticker; “You were brave for the doctor”. Link to comment

<33 You did a good job with this fic!! I love how you portrayed their dynamic here. Link to comment
