Power Surge (Runaways Nico/Karolina F/F, superhero sniffles!)

Guys. Have you seen the new season of Runaways yet?

If you haven't, STOP EVERYTHING you're doing and go turn on Hulu right now, for fuck's sake! (Or, I mean, after you read my story. Lol.) For real though, I am back with a sweet little story for Nico and Karolina, which, if you didn't get the memo, is the best queer canon ship EVARRRR OMG. SO MUCH KISSING AND CANOODLING IN S2. I can't even. Their relationship is amazing. They are also unquestionably the two most powerful members of the group, together they kick so much ass. If you haven't seen the show at all, it's a bit hard to summarize...it's based on a Marvel comic and the action is pretty wild. Here's the last story I wrote for them after the end of the first season, that summarizes the plot and the characters. For the purposes of this story, I'm keeping the action deliberately vague, because it just doesn't matter. There was a big fight, Nico and Karolina whooped the bad guys' asses and both blew out their powers. Karolina's powers are glowy, gay rainbow alien lights (and she can fly and shoot energy beams, hell yes). So...if she blows out her powers, it means she loses her light. I really think that's all you need to know for the story to make sense. Please enjoy your ride on the SS Deanoru!!

Runaways Nico/Karolina (F/F)

………………………………………………

“Hey…what happened?” Nico woke up slowly, confused and with a pounding headache, curled up on top of her girlfriend, who felt shockingly cold.

“Um…I think we won?” Karolina responded woozily, shifting slightly under Nico’s smaller body as she blinked her eyes open and took stock of herself. “It’s all…kinda fuzzy.”

“Mmm,” Nico agreed, running her hands all over her girlfriend’s body in search of injuries. “Are you hurt?”

“I don’t think so…you?” Karolina sat up slowly, leaning over the petite Goth girl and stroking a few strands of messy dark hair back from her face.

“I mean I kinda feel like I got catapulted into a brick wall…” Nico grinned sheepishly at the loving, attentive blue eyes hovering protectively over her. “But yeah, I’m okay.” She sat up too, proving her point to reassure the anxious blonde girl, even if the movement made her wince a little and hold her ribs. They smiled at each other, and Karolina took Nico’s face gently in both hands, kissing her soundly.

“Kar, you’re freezing,” the Japanese girl groaned softly, taking one of Karolina’s hands from the side of her face, and holding it protectively between her own.

“I know…sorry,” the blonde girl sighed softly, pulling her hand back and wrapping both arms around herself with a little shiver.

“Don’t be sorry. I didn’t mean it like that,” Nico shook her head with a frown, cuddling up closer to Karolina and hugging her tight. She felt so cold, it was like hugging marble. “I’m just worried about you. Do you think you blew out your rainbow lights fighting the strike team?”

“I dunno…” the tall blonde girl frowned guiltily, even though Nico had just told her not to be sorry. She closed her eyes in concentration, and held out her hand, trying to make herself glow. Nothing happened.

“It’s okay, you’ll be okay,” Nico tried to reassure her girlfriend, with a small, pained smile. “Maybe I can cast a healing spell with the staff.”

“Nico, no. You’re too weak,” Karolina shook her head, taking back the role of overprotective girlfriend in an instant from the shorter girl. “We both overdid it with our powers getting rid of the strike team…we just need to rest. No more powers today, okay?”

“Okay,” Nico agreed with a shy little smile, wrapping both her arms around Karolina’s neck and kissing her again, pushing the taller girl gently back against the headboard. That was when their bedroom door was unceremoniously thrown open, and Molly walked in carrying a stack of blankets.

“Hey! You guys are awake!” the youngest runaway beamed. “Gert, come quick! They’re up!” she yelled over her shoulder through the open door. “Man, you guys were amazing, I’m so glad you’re okay. You totally brought the term power couple to a whole new level, you know?” Molly gushed excitedly.

“Knock much?” Nico grumbled, though she couldn’t be too mad at Molly when the younger girl looked so happy to see her.

“You’ve both been unconscious all day, Nico! We were trying to take care of you,” Molly exclaimed, dropping her stack of blankets on Karolina’s feet.

“Thanks, Molly. We’re okay now,” Karolina tried to reassure the anxious-looking fifteen-year-old.

“I think that’s still up for debate,” Gert announced as she came into the room too, following her sister’s call. “No offense, but you both look kinda craptastic.”

“Gee, thanks,” Nico grumbled sarcastically; but Gert just ignored her and walked around the bed to feel Karolina’s face.

“And you’re still freezing, even after Nico’s been sleeping on top of you all day like a cat.”

“Hey. Was that a short joke?” the tiny Japanese girl glowered at her friend.

“I’ll be fine, guys…really, don’t worry about me,” Karolina shook her head; but she still looked pleased when Nico nuzzled up to her protectively. “What about the boys, where are they?”

“They’re fine. They went dumpster-diving,” Gert waved a hand dismissively. “We’re pretty much out of food…but we do have some peppermint tea downstairs. How about it? We have to do something to warm you up, Karo.”

“That’s okay…” Karolina started to automatically refuse, embarrassed by the fuss; but Nico cut her off before she could finish.

“Yes.Tea. It’s not okay, Kar. You’re not okay,” the Goth girl shook her head sternly, rubbing her thumb over her girlfriend’s cheek. “We might not be able to do much to take care of you…but if there’s tea you’re goddam well gonna drink it.”

“Okay,” Karolina beamed shyly, all her attention on Nico even though Gert was the one actually offering the tea. She leaned down and pressed their foreheads together, Nico’s hand still resting on her cheek. But instead of the kiss that Nico was expecting, she turned her face abruptly away from her girlfriend with a soft little huff. Suddenly, Nico felt the warmth of Karolina’s rainbow lights come flaring abruptly back to life.

“Aah…iiiIISHhxchew!!! *Snghf.*”A dazzling aura of colored lights flared briefly into the air from the blonde girl’s skin as she sneezed into the crook of her arm.

“Whoa! Cool,” Molly laughed, stopping abruptly when Nico leveled her with a death glare. “Um—I mean, bless you. Sorry.”

“Why are you sorry?” Karolina sniffled softly, wiping her nose on the back of her wrist.

“Do you really not know what just happened?” Nico asked gently, grinning despite her worry at her painfully adorable girlfriend.

“What…did I get snot on you?” Karolina cringed, biting her lip.

            “You glowed, silly.”

            “What?”

“When you sneezed. You glowed.” Nico grinned and kissed the end of Karolina’s nose.  The blonde girl raised one eyebrow doubtfully.

“Okay then…” she held out her hand again, concentrating on trying to bring her lights back; but once again nothing happened. “I…I can’t do it,” she sighed wearily. “Why can’t I do it?” She sniffled and wiped her nose on her wrist again.

“Kar, it’s okay, it’s not your fault,” Nico hummed, rubbing her arm consolingly. “Just rest, okay?”

“No…I suck,” the blonde girl whined softly, while Nico pulled over the pile of blankets and began unfolding them to layer on top of them both, hoping to conserve more of her body heat to share.

“Shh. You don’t suck. You’re amazing,” the shorter girl hummed lovingly, climbing into Karolina’s lap and pulling a thick, squishy blanket around her girlfriend’s shoulders to wrap around them both. “You just said a minute ago that we both need to rest today. So let’s do that…okay?” The blonde girl nodded glumly, sniffling softly again as her nose began to run.

“Ohhh…*snf!*…ohhkay…” She turned her face away from Nico, her breath hitching unevenly again, and pinched her runny nose as she cupped a hand loosely over her mouth. Waves of warmth flooded through the blankets as the blonde girl’s whole body lit up suddenly with her sparkling rainbow glow. “Aah-aahhh…aahchxOOoo!!” The burst of warm, colored lights flared briefly into the air; and then Nico felt the chill as it was extinguished again, and she was left cuddling her icy cold girlfriend inside the blankets.

“Bless you,” the shorter girl cooed, willing herself not to shiver as she leaned in and kissed Karolina on the cheek.

“Thadks…*snghf*…sorry,” the blonde girl sighed miserably, wiping her runny nose on her sleeve again.

“Here,” Molly said gently, holding out a spare bandana from her pocket. Nico was the one who took it, as Karolina was still staring shamefully down at the blankets.

“Thanks, Molls.” Nico unfolded the bandana and gently wiped her girlfriend’s wet nose, finally getting a small, shy smile in return as Karolina took the cloth from her hand.

“Thag you…*snghf!*” Karolina paused to blow her nose, and Nico yawned, dropping her head against her girlfriend’s chest as her own exhaustion rose up and crashed over her again. Gentle fingers sifted through her hair, which was loose around her shoulders for once; Gert and Molly must have let down her braids while she was sleeping. “Maybe you should sleep somewhere else, Nico…” Karolina’s husky voice broke through the shorter girl’s sleepy fog. “I don’t wanna get you sick, too…*snfl*…”

“Yeah, not happening,” Nico sighed, still managing to sound commanding even while she was half asleep.

“But I…hhuh…” the blonde girl shuddered weakly, holding the damp cloth back up to her face as another ripple of colored lights washed over her, warming them both for a fleeting moment. Nico slipped a hand under her girlfriend’s shirt and began stroking light circles over her stomach.“Iiiishxiiuh!! *s-snf!*…Aaahh…aahKSHHchxew!!!” More bursts of warm, sparkling lights accompanied Karolina’s helpless sneezes, as she clamped the bandana firmly to her runny nose, her other arm still wrapped protectively over Nico’s smaller frame slumped against her.

“Bless you,” said Gert, Molly and Nico all at once, while the blonde girl gave a rattling cough. Karolina whined softly as she wiped her nose.

“Uhhgh,” the exhausted alien girl sighed wearily. “You cad’t keep lying od top of mbe, Ndico…I’mb just gonna…*snghhf!*…keep sneezing on you until you get sick, too. And you’re already weak from that last big spell.”

“Don’t care. Not leaving you,” Nico mumbled against Karolina’s chest, still stroking gentle circles over the blonde girl’s stomach with her thumb.

“So stubborn…” Karolina grinned shyly, obviously pleased with her girlfriend’s answer as she pulled the blankets up a little higher around Nico’s shoulders, and kissed the top of her head.

“I think I’m gonna go make that tea now,” Gert grinned at the pair of them, dragging her sister by the back of her shirt. “C’mon Molls.”

“I’m glad you’re both okay! Just yell if you need anything, ‘kay?” the youngest runaway beamed at them both as she was dragged backwards out of the room.

“Mm-hmm. Thanks guys,” Nico yawned, her eyes already drifting shut again as Karolina’s gentle fingers played aimlessly with her hair. She felt another flare of warmth as her girlfriend lit up underneath her again, with a soft, shuddering hitch.

“KhhxSHIUH!! *S-snf!*…” the fingers in Nico’s hair disappeared as both of Karolina’s hands clamped the damp bandana over her face to cover her sneeze; and both girls shivered as the brief surge of warm lights flickered and died again. Karolina coughed wheezily over Nico’s head.

“Bless you…” Nico sighed, worming around a bit under the blankets so she could slip one leg between Karolina’s, rubbing her foot up and down her girlfriend’s long leg in another attempt to share her body heat. “Poor little popsicle…”

“I must be making you so cold,” the blonde girl groaned guiltily.

“S’okay,” Nico mumbled back, yawning hugely again. “Stop worrying about me…I’m too busy worrying about you.”

“’Kay…guess we’re even then,” Karolina sniffled softly. “Just…don’t go back to sleep…Gert’s making us tea.”

“Mmm,” Nico mumbled. “You too. Stay awake. Drink tea.” But when Gert and Molly came back a few minutes later, they found two sleeping girls cuddled up in the middle of the bed again. Grinning, the two sisters roused their friends gently awake, despite their halfhearted protests, to force the hot tea down their throats before they could fall asleep again.

Hey my dears, sorry this update took a while! I'm on vacation with my fam in FL, and dayyyyum I am not ready to go home to NYC tomorrow and give up the sun. (I'm usually not quite this solar-powered, I leave that to Karolina...lol). But not every minute of every day can be spent at the beach, so here you go! :)

Power Surge

Part 2

…………………………….

“Karolina, wake up. Time for more tea, it’s gonna make you feel way better. Okay?” Gert nudged the sleeping blonde girl gently.

“Hmm. Mm-hmm,” Karolina mumbled without opening her eyes, her arm wrapping a little more snugly around Nico’s body curled up half on top of her, one hand buried in her girlfriend’s silky dark hair. The smaller girl made a mumbly, contented sort of sound in her sleep, cuddling up more snugly against Karolina’s cold skin and nuzzling her face into the blonde girl’s throat, humming sleepy reassurances.

“Karolina, come on. Wake up,” Gert tried again a little more sharply, shaking the blonde girl’s shoulder.

“Gert, stop it! Let them sleep. Look how cute they are,” Molly moaned, tugging on her sister’s arm to try to pull her back from the bed. “I can’t believe all we have are these stupid cheap flip-phones. We need photographic documentation of this, to remind Nico of what a cuddly little puppy she really is the next time she gets all commander-y when we’re not practicing hard enough.”

“Hey, what’s up guys? Why are we watching Nico and Karolina sleep? This feels kinda pervy.” Chase frowned in confusion as he entered the room with Alex, having just returned from their supply run.

“Karolina blew out her lights fighting the strike team, and now she has a power-sucking rainbow cold,” Molly explained succinctly, like it was the most logical thing in the world. “Nico probably blew out her powers too, she’s been kind of zombified all day. They need sleep. But Gert keeps trying to torture them with tea.”

“I would love to let them sleep, Molls, but we can’t. Karolina’s literally hypothermic right now!” The purple-haired girl ranted, waving the ear thermometer flashing 94.2 in front of her sister’s face. “Hot drinks are an effective treatment for early-stage hypothermia, I took First Aid last summer at camp. So this is our window, we can’t just keep letting her get colder. If she doesn’t wake up soon, she might not wake up at all!”

“Just take a deep breath, okay Gert?” Chase put both hands on his girlfriend’s arms, rubbing gently up and down, trying to match her breathing. “Karolina’s half alien. We know that. Whatever’s happening to her right now is connected to her powers, we know that too. So her body temp dropping out like this—it might not even be real hypothermia. For all we know, this is just what a normal cold is like for her, and it’ll be gone once her powers come back. Her entire metabolic structure is probably pretty different from ours. Considering, you know, that she’s half rainbow light.”

“Everybody shut up…we’re sleeping,” Nico’s cranky voice slurred, finally roused by the agitated chatter around her bed. “Why’s everyone in our room?” she whined sullenly, rubbing her eyes with a bleary yawn.

“We just wanted to make sure you guys are okay,” Molly said more gently than usual, the first to approach Nico’s side. “The boys are back with supplies and stuff. And Karolina’s really, really cold.”

“And we have tea. And soup!” Gert hastily interjected, looking through one of the bags over Chase’s arm. “I mean it’s just ramen so it’s mostly chemicals, but…it’s better than nothing.”

“Yeah, you’re welcome,” Alex retorted in mild annoyance, arms crossed on Chase’s other side. “It was no trouble at all, just five hours of dumpster diving so the six of us can eat for another few days. Sorry we didn’t bring along our Zagat’s Guide.”

“Okay, okay…just shut up already,” Nico grumbled, pushing herself up onto one elbow against her girlfriend’s side and squinting at the brightness of the bedside light. The petite Goth girl still looked at least half asleep, her usually stylized hair hanging loose and messy, and trailing across her girlfriend’s skin. “Karolina…” she leaned down and kissed the blonde girl’s temple, pressing her lips right up to her girlfriend’s ear. “Time to wake up, babe.”

“Mm-hmm…five more minutes, Nico…” The blonde girl’s voice came out so soft, it sounded like she was talking in her sleep.

“Okay,” the tiny Japanese girl hummed, fingers running through long blonde locks while her breath warmed Karolina’s temple. She kissed the spot again. “Five more minutes.” Nico was still grinning sleepily when she looked up and remembered that all their friends were watching. “Ugh. All of you please fuck off,” she mumbled, her unguarded expression of adoration from a moment ago already replaced by a cranky scowl. Then that expression drifted out of focus, too, as Nico ducked her face against Karolina’s side and gave a few rattling coughs, followed by a sharp, jagged breath.

“Aaheshxuh!! *Snghf.*” Nico shivered, stifling a sleepy sneeze against her arm before melting limply back into the blonde girl’s side, with a soft sigh and a woozy sniffle. Her eyes slid closed again as she rubbed her nose absently, burrowing into Karolina more snugly.

“Well that didn’t take very long,” Gert sighed, her tone caught between amusement and anxiety.

“Also bless you,” Chase added politely.

“Pleeease go away,” the cranky Goth girl whined softly without lifting her head from her girlfriend’s chest. “Leave the tea. I’ll…*snghf*…I’ll give it to her.” She coughed again, and Karolina stirred, her arm wrapping possessively around her petite girlfriend.

          “Nico…”

“Shh. I’m here, Kar, it’s okay,” the Japanese girl hummed softly, sniffling again as she rubbed her nose impatiently along the length of her sleeve. Finally Karolina’s blue eyes drifted open, her sleepy smile lighting up her pale face as she took in Nico and nothing else.

“You’re sick,” the blonde girl observed woozily as she took in her girlfriend’s sniffly nose-rubbing, her pale skin, the dark shadows under her eyes.

“You’re sick,” Nico corrected gently, leaning up on her elbow again to hover over Karolina’s face, stroking her cold cheek with a weary smile. “You used up all your rainbow juice, now you just gotta rest ‘till you get it back.” The Goth girl ducked her head back down against her girlfriend’s side, muffling a deep, wet-sounding cough that rattled her chest.

“Ouch,” Karolina murmured, her fingers gently trailing over Nico’s back.

“It’s fine,” Nico shook her head, smiling shyly now that her girlfriend’s sleepy attention was fixed on her. “Don’t worry about me. We’re all worried about you, we just wanna warm you up. Can you sit up and drink some of this tea Gert brought us?”

“’Kay,” Karolina nodded with a yawn, sitting up a little shakily with Nico curled protectively against her side. The blonde girl paused and turned away from her girlfriend as she huffed in a few shallow breaths, her skin lighting dimly with a faint rainbow glow. “Iiiihschew!!! …*Snnghf.*” She pressed the back of her hand sleepily across her face as her lights flared bright and warm.

“Whoa,” Chase and Alex said in unison as the warm lights flared out. Nico shivered weakly.

“Well that’s different,” Chase observed unnecessarily, one eyebrow raised as he looked back at his girlfriend, who still had her worried face on.

“She’ll be fine. It’s just a cold,” Nico grumbled protectively, reaching for the tea Gert had placed on the bedside table. “C’mere Kar…this is gonna make you feel better, okay?” She put the mug carefully in her girlfriend’s cold hands, playing aimlessly with Karolina’s blonde hair while the taller girl sipped the tea. A few weak waves of colored light rippled through the alien girl’s body, and she sighed, closing her eyes.

“That feels good,” she murmured, taking another sip. Beside her, Nico sniffled with a soft, helpless sound, letting go of her girlfriend to cup her hands absently to her face.

“Iiiishxew!! Hheh’iiishxuh!!! *Snghf.*” Nico sighed wearily behind her hands, wiping her nose on her sleeve with another soft, liquid sniffle.

“Bless you,” said Gert, Molly, Chase and Alex all at once, while Karolina put a steadying hand on her girlfriend’s shivery back.

“Tea,” the blonde girl murmured simply, pressing a kiss to Nico’s forehead as she pushed the cup back into her girlfriend’s hands. The shorter girl whined softly, but she took a sip.

“That does feel good…thanks Gert,” Nico sighed softly, while Karolina smiled sleepily and pressed another lingering kiss to her forehead. “Here, Kar, drink some more. You need it more than I do.”

“No I…don’t…” the sleepy blonde girl shook her head with a soft sigh, raising an arm across her face as her breath huffed, and her body lit up again in a dazzling swirl of colors. “Aah-ahtchOOoo!!” She sneezed dazedly into the crook of her arm, making Nico shiver more as her rainbow warmth flared up and then extinguished again.

“Bless you baby,” Nico murmured croakily, resting her head against Karolina’s arm while the blonde girl dug Molly’s bandana out of her pocket and wiped her runny nose with a deep snuffle.

“I’m making you feel worse,” the blonde alien girl murmured guiltily, running her fingers up and down Nico’s arm. “I’m making you cold.”

“Only a…a little…” The tiny Japanese girl shook her head as her eyes welled up, and she pushed the tea absently back into Karolina’s hands. “Iiiishxiiuh!! *S-snf!*” Nico’s small body trembled with shivers as she pitched forward and sneezed into her hands again.

“You’re a terrible liar,” Karolina whispered in her ear with a weary smile, taking another little sip of tea while Nico sighed and wiped her nose on her sleeve again.

“I’m gonna get another bandana for you, Nico,” Molly volunteered, bouncing out of the room.

“I’m making more tea,” Gert announced with the certainty of someone who was thrilled to have something concrete to do.

“And I think we’re gonna take the Rolls out for another supply run to the drug store,” Chase gestured to himself and Alex. “What kind of cold meds do you guys want?”

“Adythidg that will…*snghf!*…knock me out,” Nico grumbled, going limp against Karolina’s side again with a soft yawn, accompanied by another trembly shiver. The blonde girl put the tea down and pulled a few blankets up from the messy pile on the bed to wrap around her girlfriend’s small body, planting a kiss on the top of her head.

“Karolina? What about you?” Alex asked, doing his very best not to pay attention to the way the blonde girl was fussing over Nico, and how Nico in return had eyes for no one but Karolina.

“Whatever you get for Nico is fine, I don’t care,” Karolina yawned, rubbing her glazed eyes. She took another sip of the hot tea, sending more faint ripples of warm, colored lights though her body. “I think the tea is helping more anyway.”

“Yeah. It is,” Nico agreed, not moving from her slumped position against Karolina’s side. “I can feel your skin getting a little warmer every time you take a sip…it feels good.”

“Yay,” Karolina smiled weakly, taking another sip and leaning down to kiss Nico before her lips turned cold again.

Power Surge

Part 3 (In Which Nico is an Adorable Stoner on Cold Meds)

…………………………………………………………………………………..

“Molly, put me down! I can walk,” Nico kicked at the empty air for emphasis, giving the younger girl an exasperated glare; but then she started laughing. Molly raised an eyebrow, but gently set the petite Goth girl on her feet. “Thag you,” Nico sighed, rubbing her nose absently before sticking one hand on her hip. “And may I…*snghf!*…please remind you that we are not dying. This is just, like, a short-term snot situation. You guys don’t have to hover this much.”

“Okay. Sorry,” Molly nodded guiltily, not wanting to antagonize her fearless leader while she was sick and out of sorts, especially after what a hard time they’d gone through when Molly blamed Nico for Topher’s death. Even if they had only known him briefly, it was the first time Molly had ever known what it was like to feel connected to someone who she thought shared her powers.

“Jeez, kiddo, don’t look so serious.” Nico grinned and cocked her head, scrunching up her pink nose playfully as she reached up on her tiptoes to ruffle Molly’s curly hair. “Heh. Much better. *Snghf*…wait, where was I going again?”

“Um…bathroom?” Molly gestured down the hall, smiling quizzically at Nico’s newfound cheerfulness.

“Ohhhhh yeah. No doubt. Be right back, ‘kay dudes?”

“Are you sure you’re okay, Nico?” Gert asked warily, raising one eyebrow as she looked the Japanese girl up and down. “You seem…kinda loopy. Maybe I should walk you there?”

“Didn’t we just establish that I can walk?” Nico sighed, giving Gert the same mock-stern look she’d just given Molly a moment ago. “But if you’re keen on being useful, you could keep Karolina warm ‘till I get back. Hands off the goods!” She narrowed her slightly glassy eyes at her friend, shaking a warning finger in her face. “Just, lie right next to her so she gets your body heat.”

            “Um…”

“Actually, no, forget that. Molly…” Nico waved her finger between the two of them to show her preference, as her voice died away with a trembly huff, and her woozy eyes slid out of focus. “Hhiiishxu!! *Snghff.*” She pitched forward with a stuffy sneeze, wiping her nose in the already damp bandana. “…You…*snfl*…you get id bed with her. You’re taller, so you’ll cover her better. Plus I trust you more.”

“Nico!” Gert spluttered indignantly. “I’m not gonna make a move on your girlfriend while she’s sleeping. Or—or ever!” The purple-haired girl looked caught between exasperation and amusement.

“Yeah, whatever. My girl is irresistible, I trust no one. Be r-right…b-back…” Nico waved them off with one hand, her steps slowing down as her breath quivered teasingly. “Aaahhxiiew!!” She stumbled a little as she sniffled and wiped her nose again, followed by a few soft, rumbly coughs. Molly chuckled under her breath as she watched Nico shuffling woozily down the hall, one hand trailing absently over the patterns on the wallpaper.

“Oh man, Nico’s high as shit right now, huh? What kind of cold medicine did Chase give them?”

“Molly! Language!” Gert immediately chastised, unable to completely hide her grin. “But yes, she is.” The purple-haired girl walked over to the end table by the bed and picked up the bottle of red syrup, examining the generic label. “It’s just regular stuff. But not everyone reacts the same to every drug. That’s why finding the right anxiety cocktail can be such a fun, fun challenge.” Gert sighed, worrying once more about what would happen the next time her meds ran out.

“Mm, well, at least it knocked Karolina out. Maybe she’ll feel better after she gets some more sleep,” Molly sighed, throwing back the covers on Nico’s side of the bed and sitting down next to the pale, sleeping alien girl.

“Molly, do not get in that bed, it’s covered in cooties,” Gert groaned.

“Is that your official clinical assessment, Dr. Yorkes?” Molly rolled her eyes sarcastically.

“Molls, come on. I don’t want you catching this thing too, we’re already operating at half-power here.”

“But I told Nico I’d keep Karolina warm!”

“She’ll be back in five minutes, she’s just being overprotective as usual,” Gert rolled her eyes; but Molly had already curled up next to the sleeping blonde girl, resting a hand protectively on her arm and snuggling up to her long limbs, trying to share some body heat.

“Ughhh…” Karolina whined pitifully in her sleep. “Nico…”

“Hey, it’s okay. She’ll be right back,” Molly said soothingly, rubbing the blonde girl’s cold arm reassuringly. Karolina’s hazy blue eyes blinked open, slowly filling with tears as she took in the room around her and realized that her girlfriend wasn’t there.

“I really want her,” the sleepy alien girl whispered miserably, curling up under the covers as a weak shiver coursed through her limbs, and the tears in her eyes spilled down her pale cheeks.

“Aww, Karo, please don’t cry,” Molly begged, sitting up beside her in the bed and leaning down to plant a kiss on her cold forehead. “D’you really feel awful?” Karolina just nodded shamefully, sniffling softly as more tears spilled down her face.

“I’ll make more tea, that helped before,” Gert said gently, her big-sister instincts kicking in when she saw how miserable Karolina was, and how worried it was making Molly.

“’Kay,” the shivery blonde girl whispered, raising a hand to wipe her runny nose on her sleeve. “Hhuh…ehhhshx!” She pressed her arm harder against her nose, half-muffling a wet sneeze in her pillow. Instead of her whole body lighting up, this time her lights rippled erratically from her hair, down her arms and legs before fizzling out.

“Here,” Molly offered her the crumpled up bandana from the bedside table.

“Molly!” Gert yelped in her most authoritative big-sister voice. “Go wash your hands this minute! Do not touch anything, especially your face!”

“Dang, yes mom,” Molly rolled her eyes; but she ran her hand through Karolina’s hair and kissed her forehead one more time before climbing out of the bed. “Don’t worry, K. I promise we’ll make you better.”

“Thags…*snghf*…hh-hhiishxOOoo!!” Karolina buried her sneeze in the damp bandana, her lights flaring distinctly less brightly than before.

“Bless you,” Gert and Molly chorused sympathetically. The blonde girl just shivered and sighed, wrapping her arms snugly around herself as she curled up a little tighter. “*Snghf.*”

“Hey! I gave you a job, Molly Hayes-Hernandez. Who told you to get up?” Nico demanded, stumbling her way back into the room just as Molly was climbing out of the bed.

“Gert did.” Molly pointed at her sister, happy to deflect the blame. “Anyway, she wants you, not me.” Nico’s pout immediately dissolved as she crawled back into bed with her miserable, trembling girlfriend, and wrapped her up in a tight hug, barely even noticing Molly patting the top of her head on her way out the door.

“Aww, babe…” the tiny Japanese girl cooed, covering Karolina’s face with slow, lingering kisses, and stroking away her tears with gentle fingers. “Poor thing, even your tears are cold…you must feel so awful,” Nico hummed, wrapping her small body around Karolina’s huddled form under the layers of blankets, so the blonde girl’s face was resting against Nico’s collarbone.

“Don’t leave…okay?” Karolina sniffled, rubbing her nose in the damp bandana as her breath quavered in her chest, and she trembled in Nico’s arms. “Kh-hhxshu!! *S-snf*…” Only a weak wave of colored lights rippled through her pale skin now.

“Bless you, little rainbow,” Nico hummed sweetly, cupping one hand protectively to the back of her girlfriend’s blonde head. “And I’m not going anywhere…not without you. Not ever.”

“But I’mb…*snghf!*…gonna make you feel as bad as I feel…I’m hurting you,” Karolina whimpered, as more icy tears dripped down her pale face. Her lips were starting to turn blue.

“Actually…feels good now,” Nico sighed, sifting her fingers aimlessly through endless locks of long blonde hair. “I got so hot…this is better.” Gert frowned and came around to press the back of her hand to Nico’s forehead.

“Well, crap, you’ve got a fever,” the purple-haired girl sighed. “Guess that explains why you’ve been acting like a goofy little stoner fuck.”

“M’not goofy…I’m a force of darkness,” Nico mumbled, taking her hand back from Karolina’s hair to rub her knuckles roughly across her damp nose, with a long, liquid sniffle. Karolina snuggled closer and trailed her fingers over her girlfriend’s back. Gert just chuckled.

“Oh, man…Molly was right, I’d give anything for a camera right now,” the purple-haired girl sighed. “But, in lieu of embarrassing pictures of cuddly Nico, I’m gonna go make some more tea. And food. You guys have to eat, okay? I’ll find something comforting. Just stay under the covers and try to rest.”

“No prob, Bob,” Nico yawned, her fingers trailing absently through Karolina’s hair again.

“Aah’iiIISHxuhh!!! *Snghf*…” Karolina’s lights flickered dimly as she sneezed against Nico’s chest, with her runny nose buried in the bandana. Despite Nico’s earlier assurance that her girlfriend’s human-popsicle impression was making her fever feel better, the tiny Goth girl felt goosebumps rising up and down her arms from Karolina’s cold breath on her neck.

“Bless you,” Nico murmured, cupping her warm hand to Karolina’s cold cheek, and pressing a lingering kiss between her eyes. The blonde girl sighed and tilted her head up, and Nico kissed her, runny nose and all.

“Feel better, adorable queermos,” Gert grinned, resting a hand briefly on each of their heads before heading out the door. “Try not to do anything too cute before Molly and I get back. We may not be able to take pictures, but we can still tease you like crazy later.”

“I’ll just pretend I dod’t remember,” Nico called sleepily after Gert’s retreating form. "I'm delirious. I have a fever." She grinned goofily and gave a small, fake cough. Then Karolina coughed for real, raspy and rattling in her chest; and in a flash all Nico's attention was back on her sweet, thoroughly miserable blondie.

“I’mb…*snghf!*…I’mb sorry, Nico,” the shivering alien girl whispered dejectedly, laying her head back down against the shorter girl’s warm chest with a soft, wet sniffle.

“You’re not allowed to be sorry, K,” Nico hummed softly back, her thumb moving in light circles over the back of Karolina’s neck. “You didn’t do anything wrong.”

“It feels like I did…everythig feels wrong,” the blonde alien girl shivered, blowing her nose softly in the damp bandana. It wasn’t enough to clear out all the congestion in her head, but she didn’t have the strength to blow any harder; so her nose just kept running, and she snuffled ineffectually, with a halfhearted wipe against her sleeve.

“That’s just because you’re so sick, babes…it’s gonna pass, I…*snghf*…I promise. You hear me, Karolina Dean? You are a badass glowing rainbow alien, and I’m a badass witch, and we are not gonna be taken out by snot.” The blonde girl laughed weakly, which quickly devolved into a wet cough.

“Ohh…*snfl*…ohhkay…” Karolina agreed halfheartedly, wiping her nose again as the tickle rose up all the way through her chilled body, and her tired eyes squeezed helplessly shut. “AaaAAHhh’tchxew!!!” She shivered all over as her cold breath tickled Nico’s neck again, despite the bandana pushed up to her wet nose.

“Bless you,” Nico hummed, yawning softly. “Bless you, bless you…” Karolina made an unintelligible mumbly sound, and had almost drifted back to sleep when a wheezy quiver in Nico’s chest jolted her awake again.

“Aaahh…” Nico’s warm hand left Karolina’s hair to press against the slick underside of her nose. “Iiih’iiishxew!! *S-snghf!*” Karolina kissed her collarbone.

“Bless you,” the blonde girl whispered…and then she really was asleep, a slow and steady rhythm of lukewarm, flickering lights accompanying her stuffy breathing.

Thanks so much! (And to all my loyal peeps, I appreciate you muchly). And FUCK YES you should watch runaways, omggggg. It's girlpower on top of marvel superhero magic on top of CANON QUEER SHIP! Nico and Karolina actually have THE first on-screen queer kiss in the entire marvel cinematic universe. S1 is a slow burn (but only 10 eps), but S2 it's ON. I absolutely adore them as a couple, almost as much as they adore each other. Not to be missed. 😍🌈🌈🌈

Power Surge

Part 4

………………………

It had definitely been at least a day since they blew their powers; though Nico and Karolina had quickly lost track of time after a few rounds of falling asleep, being nudged awake for tea or food, more sleep, and waking up comforting each other through wheezy coughing fits and painful shivering. This time, it was Nico who was roused from her bleary fever dreams by her girlfriend’s restless whimpering, shifting under the blankets with one arm locked protectively around her petite girlfriend’s waist.

“Mom, don’t, please…please…” Karolina’s cold limbs were twitching under the blankets, her dream wrapped tightly around her and pulling her down further into the scary place.

“Heyyy, it’s okay Kar. I’m right here, I got you,” the sleepy Goth girl mumbled, rolling onto her side to face her whimpering girlfriend, reaching out to stroke the messy blonde locks back from her pale face. The half-alien girl was so cold now, pale wasn’t even really the right word anymore; Karolina’s skin had achieved a faint, delicate shade of blue, like newly formed ice over a winter lake. “You’re safe, you’re in the Hostel…your mom can’t get you,” Nico murmured hoarsely, nuzzling into her girlfriend’s chilled throat while Karolina’s arm just wrapped more tightly around her.

“Nico…” the blonde girl whimpered in her sleep, sounding so scared, and so heartbroken, Nico felt hot tears blurring her vision as she pushed herself up woozily on one elbow, planting soothing kisses all over her girlfriend’s frigidly cold face.

“Kar, I’m here…I’m right here, babe…” The tiny Goth girl sniffled, and she swiped her free hand impatiently under her runny nose, unwilling to roll over away from Karolina to grab a bandana from the bedside table. Instead, she slumped back down against the pillows, pressed flush against her girlfriend’s chilled body, as her breath huffed traitorously and she cupped both hands over her face.

“HhuhCHIIiixh!!” Nico shivered weakly, her small body curling up a little tighter against her girlfriend’s tall frame. “Aaahtxchew!!! *Snfl*…*s-snghf!*…” She had no choice but to sit up then, swaying a little dizzily with a feverish head rush as she twisted her upper body to grab a fresh, clean cloth from the side table. Her head was swimming as she blew her nose, and even that didn’t appease the wet tickle swirling around somewhere behind her eyes. Her sore ribs expanded again, hitching jaggedly to suck in more air as she buried her nose firmly in the damp cloth. “Hht’kshhx!!”

“Bless you…” a sleepy, gravelly voice murmured as Nico blew her nose again, dropping back to the pillows dizzily.

“Thag you…” the Japanese girl yawned softly, giving her nose a final wipe before shoving the damp cloth into the pocket of her thrift store hoodie. “I’mb…*snghf*…sorry I woke you up…but nod really, because you were having bad dreambs, baby. Do you…*snghf!*…wanna talk about it?” Nico cupped her warm hand to her girlfriend’s cold cheek, her eyes full of love and understanding. Karolina put her cold hand on top of Nico’s, lacing their fingers together against her cheek as her blue eyes brimmed with tears.

“They were putting you in the murder box,” the blonde girl whispered, her voice quavering with the freshness of the nightmare. “Our parents…and I couldn’t stop them, because I…*snf*…I dod’t have my powers…” Cold tears spilled down her face, Nico felt the chill dripping over her hand. But she didn’t pull away. Instead, she wrapped both arms around her alien girlfriend’s neck, hugging her as tight as she could, hooking one leg over the blonde girl’s hip to pull her even closer.

“That sounds horrible,” Nico whispered, trailing her fingers through endlessly long locks of blonde hair over Karolina’s shoulders. “I’m so sorry you had to see that, Kar…but it’s not real…it’s never gonna happen. We’re gonna get better, we’re gonna be fine. Better than fine. You’re gonna get your glow back, baby, and you’re gonna light up the world.” She pulled back a little so they were face to face, giving her sad girl a brave smile.

“How can I feel so crappy, and still feel like the luckiest girl in the world at the same time?” Karolina whispered croakily, running her hand aimlessly through Nico’s long, shiny black hair. They grinned shyly at each other. Then Karolina abruptly pulled her hands back to cover a deep cough that rattled her chest, pulling back a few inches away from Nico in the bed while the shorter girl just kept playing with a loose lock of blonde hair. When the jagged coughing fit finally passed, Nico leaned over and grabbed a half-drunk cup of lukewarm tea from the side table, urging her woozy girlfriend to sit up a little against the pillows and drink.

“There, does that feel a little better?”

“A little…” Karolina nodded absently, even while her tired eyes were narrowing and her runny nose began to twitch and relax irritably, her pale blue skin lighting up with a faint, warm glow. “Iiihh-IISCHEW!!! *Snghf.*” She fumbled with the clumsily folded cloth from her pocket, oblivious to the brief burst of colors flashing off her chilled skin.

“Bless you,” Nico hummed, her voice full of adoration as she leaned in and kissed the chilled tip of her girlfriend’s nose. Karolina giggled a little, and coughed.

            “Nico?”

            “Hmm?”

“Will you…*snghf!*…will you blow on my hands?” Karolina asked sheepishly, discarding the damp cloth to hold both her cold hands together between them, in a slightly kittenish position. They were facing each other now, cuddled up lying on their sides, with Nico trying to share as much of her fevery body heat as possible with her cold-numbed, powered-down girlfriend.

“Sure, babe,” the Goth girl grinned a little woozily, taking one of the blonde girl’s chilled hands and kissing it first. Karolina grinned shyly back, always warmed just by having Nico’s attention focused on her. The shorter girl took both of Karolina’s hands between her own, trying to cover her girlfriend’s longer fingers as best she could, and bringing them up to her mouth, pressing her lips to the slightly open spot at the center and blowing a warm breath between the blonde girl’s palms. Karolina closed her eyes with a tiny whimper of pleasure.

“That feels sooooo good,” the blonde girl sighed croakily, with a sniffle.

“Not my favorite way of making you feel good, but I’ll…*snfl*…I’ll take it,” Nico murmured, an unabashedly flirty grin on her slightly flushed face. The fever seemed to be having an disinhibiting effect on the petite Goth girl; she said whatever she was thinking, whatever she was feeling, she had completely lost her filter. Even with Karolina, she wasn’t usually quite this bold. The blonde girl grinned back sleepily, pleased with having all of Nico’s attention to herself, and closed her eyes in pleasure while Nico blew on her cold hands several times more. But the effect was so brief, and as soon as it passed, the painful chill settled into Karolina’s hands again like ice water. She felt so cold and sniffly, and soon her rainbow colors were swirling around her again, giving Nico fair warning to take her hands back.

“Iiiishxuh!! *Snghf.*” Karolina shuddered as another faint rainbow wafted off her skin.

“Bless you,” Nico hummed, yawning softly as she cuddled up to her frozen girlfriend again, her dark head tucked against Karolina’s chest, and slipped a hand under the blonde girl’s shirt to rub some warmth into her back. Karolina just sniffled and pulled out her damp bandana again, pinching her cold nose in the fabric and rubbing it roughly while her breath continued to rise and fall inconsistently. Nico could feel the brief flares of warmth coming to the surface of her girlfriend’s skin and dying away again as Karolina’s nose kept teasing her.

"Hh-hheh…aahhh…ehh’TSCHXuhh!! *Snnnfl.*”  Another shuddering flare of warm rainbow lights enveloped them both before dying away again, leaving them with a fresh chill.

“Bless you,” Nico hummed sleepily again, crawling up a little higher on the pillows to press their foreheads together.

“Thags,” the blonde girl sighed, sounding exhausted. Then she frowned, pressing her forehead lightly back to her girlfriend’s, then feeling her hot face with one half-frozen hand. “Nico…you’re burning up,” the blonde girl sighed worriedly, running her cold fingers through her girlfriend’s long, loose strands of black hair, usually so precisely styled.

“Just feels that way to you because you’re…*snghf!*…hypothermbic,” Nico yawned, rubbing her nose absently on her sleeve. “I dod’t feel so bad, Kar. Still more worried about…you…” Her eyes fluttered closed again as a soft huff escaped. “Aaahxchiew!!! *Snf.*”

“Bless you…” Karolina sighed softly, before her eyes squeezed shut with a shuddering cough. She curled her body up a little so her head was pointed down, and not straight at her girlfriend’s face. Nico combed her fingers through Karolina’s blonde hair, rubbing her scalp affectionately.

“I thig we…*snghf!*…we both need some more meds,” the shorter girl yawned, pushing up on one elbow to lean over Karolina’s body and grab the medicine bottle off the side table. “Let’s be real for a sec, we both sound like shit.”

“If I take that, it’s gonna knock me out again,” Karolina whispered, eyeing the bottle warily.

“Kinda the point,” Nico agreed, sitting up a little woozily to pour out a dose in the little cup. “Aaahh…*snfl*…”She turned her face into her elbow, eyebrows knit together in a desperate attempt to hold in her sneeze a little and not spill the syrup. “Ehhschxx!! *Snghf, snghf.*”

“Bless you, babe,” Karolina murmured croakily, licking the side of Nico’s hand where a trickle of red liquid had spilled.

“Ughh. Thadks,” Nico sighed, wiping her nose in her elbow one more time before re-pouring a full dose into the cup. “Okay. Open. Time to pass the fuck out so you can feel better, little rainbow.” Karolina just pouted, shrinking back against the pillows slightly.

“What if I have more nightmares?” The blonde girl whispered, unable to look her girlfriend in the eye as she confessed her fears. She was supposed to be a superhero, not a big baby who was afraid of bad dreams.

“Hey…” Nico turned and put the cold medicine down on the side table before cuddling up on the blonde girl’s pillow, one hand resting on her cheek as they lay face-to-face. “It’s okay if that happens, Kar. I’ll be right here to protect you. I’ll cancel my dreams and jump straight into yours.” She grinned, a goofy, feverish grin, and Karolina laughed a little, burying a cough in the pillow.

“You’re such a romantic,” the blonde girl whispered, her beaming smile sending a flock of warm butterflies straight to Nico’s stomach.

“Do not. Tell. Anyone,” Nico warned, punctuating her declaration with a kiss. Karolina’s only response was to clamp her hands hastily to her face as another warm swirl of rainbow lights enveloped her.

“Hhhkshhx!!” The weakened alien girl shuddered with the effort of trying to hold in her sneeze a little, with her face inches away from her girlfriend’s on the pillow.

“Bless you,” Nico murmured, kissing her icy forehead as the colored lights died away again. “Now be good and take your medicine.”

“Yes mistress,” Karolina smirked weakly, her woozy state making her a little more bold and flirty, too. Nico always ended up on top whenever they started messing around; but they had never actually talked about it, about how Nico liked to dominate her. Karolina liked it too. She was sure she saw a blush rising in her girlfriend’s fever-flushed face as she obediently took the cup from Nico and swallowed.

This story was also very entertaining!  Definitely meatier than the other one and I appreciated it more for that as it let the characters shine.  Karolina and Nico make for a lovely couple.  Thank you for sharing your work!
