Spanish teacher (F)

I’ve written a few observations in the past about my Spanish teacher, whom I’ll call Señora. However, those observations were about when she got sick. She gets sick quite often, because her immune system is fairly weak. However, recently, I found out (through her own complaints) that Señora also has allergies, which have been bothering her enough recently that her nose has been clogged for the past month, pretty much. She’s been so sniffly for the past month from her allergies, and she’s coughed a lot too.

Before we get into the observation, let me describe Señora for you. She is about 34 years old, quite tall (probably around 5’6”), and has tan skin and very long straight dark brown hair with some dirty blonde highlights. She also has a slightly tall, straight nose and friendly arched eyebrows. She almost always wears a friendly smile, cardigan, black flowing dress pants, black heels, a plain light colored shirt, two bracelets, and teardrop shaped earrings. She is one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. Only second, just under my cello teacher M.

Disclaimer: No sneezes today, but I bet there will be some in the future

In my Spanish class today, we learned more about the preterite tense, which we’ve recently been working on. We’ve been going over the many irregulars in preterite, and Señora sat on the desk next to me past the aisle (no one was sitting there) and named some irregulars’ definitions and had us say the infinitives and preterite conjugations. Señora talked for a bit until she said, “Alright, next one!” Instead of saying the next definition, she suddenly stopped, her breath hitched, she stayed silent for about two seconds, and her facial expression turned blank. She sniffled lightly. “I’m gonna sneeze,” Señora said softly but swiftly. I turned to my left to look at her and saw her pinch the middle of the bridge of her nose with her index finger and thumb as she sat on that desk next to me. “Ugh,” she groaned.

”¿Salud?” I said questioningly since she hadn’t sneezed yet. Some other kids said “Bless you.” Señora sat there on the desk with her feet up on the chair, which was pulled out, pinching her nose for a few seconds with her lips slightly parted and eyes shut. The class was silent for those few seconds as the sneeze decided whether or not it wanted to come.

”It’s gone!” Señora said with slight frustration, opened her deep brown eyes, put her hand down, and glanced around the front row, which included me. Her nose was now tinged red, and she sniffled thickly before continuing what she was saying. She was very sniffly for the rest of class and even swiped her finger beneath her nose once or twice.

It’s a bummer it didn’t come, but I still enjoyed observing, especially that close to her with such an excellent view. I will update if there is anything else from her with her allergies in the future. I hope we got some good observations from her this spring and a few sneezes. I will be picked up tomorrow and be able to talk with her after class for a bit, so it’s possible that since I’ll see her for longer, maybe she will have a higher chance of sneezing in front of me.

Great observation, sneeze or no sneeze. Thanks for sharing!

That was a wonderful ob, and yes there is just something about an announcement of having to sneeze, whether it comes or not. That would have been great to witness.

You’re welcome! I was debating whether or not to share it since the sneeze didn’t come, but after some thought, I decided I was going to anyway since she was close and announced it. I’m glad you liked it.

Thank you. I agree! There’s something amazing about someone announcing they need to sneeze, even if they don’t sneeze. Truly something amazing. Glad you enjoyed it!

Guys, I also just remembered that we will be outside for some of class today doing a review game with a mini relay race. :o  And I’ll also be talking to her for longer since I’m being picked up as I mentioned before. Oh I really hope she does sneeze today. It’s such a perfect setup. How could it be better than that? Going outside and being able to talk for an extra ten to twenty minutes! Even if she doesn’t sneeze, maybe I’ll get to talk to her about her allergies and how she’s feeling if going outside ends up bothering her but not making her sneeze. She’s open about discussing how she feels when she’s sick, so perhaps! We will see what today has to bring :D

Update: I didn’t see Señora today, because she had to leave early because of a family emergency. What a birthday present...my favorite teacher wasn’t there all class because who knows what happened. And I probably won’t even see her tomorrow or the next day either :( And we have spring break next week so I won’t see her until after then... I really hope we can get something soon though, everything is going okay, and I see her before spring break. Otherwise my anxiety will take over and I’ll be legitimately concerned all of spring break thinking about her and her family and hoping everything is okay

I hope Señora is doing well, and Happy Birthday to you!
