recounting a fit

Playing with different writing techniques...

I heard you come in, kick off your shoes and set something down in the kitchen.  Then you come into the living room where I’m still sitting on the couch with my laptop.  I put it on the coffee table and get up to give you a kiss.  “How was your day?  Did your big meeting go okay”
“Yeah, my meeting went pretty well.  But then I had the most embarrassing thing happen this afternoon on my way home.  It was awful!”
“Oh, no!  What happened?”
“I stopped in at Kroger to get a couple things- not a full grocery run, just a few odds and ends…”
As you finish saying this, you suddenly turn and head back to the kitchen.  “Sorry- I forgot there’s some stuff in there that needs to go in the freezer.”
I follow you into the kitchen.
“So I was in Kroger, and I just wanted to get to the back of the store.  And I cut down the first aisle I saw that looked empty.  I didn’t realize until halfway down that it was the aisle with the laundry detergent.
“For whatever reason, the scent was ticking my nose more than it usually does, so I was trying to hurry down the aisle before it made me sneeze.  But then a little old lady on one of those ride-on scooter carts stopped me to ask for help reaching something down from a high shelf.  I had to sneeze so bad, but I really didn’t want to sneeze in the store.”
I’ve never understood why you’re so against sneezing in public, but I know how much you hate it.  Anyway, it doesn’t seem like you’re looking for commentary right now, so I just listen.
“So I hand her the bottle she wanted, and put it in her basket.  But then I guess she didn’t really know how to drive the cart, because instead of going forward, she backed up and bumped into a guy standing right behind her.”
“Oh, no!” I said, still trying to figure out where on earth this story was going.
“He was fine- he was a young guy,” she said.  “But she bumped him enough he dropped the detergent bottle he was pulling off a shelf.  And it smashed when it hit the floor.  Really perfumed stuff- the kind I’m super allergic to.”
Ahh…now I’m starting to understand.
“And I had the. biggest. sneezing fit.  Seriously- I don’t think I’ve ever sneezed so many times in my life.”
“Yeah?” I ask.  I’ve never figured out how to tell you how much your allergies turn me on- this conversation is amazing, yet torturous.  “That must have been embarrassing- I know you hate sneezing in public.”
“It was awful- I was already trying not to sneeze, and then that perfume hit me and I just lost complete control.  I must have sneezed fifteen or twenty times before I could even catch my breath.”
“Wow,” I reply, not at all sure what to say but hoping you’ll continue.
“And that was just the beginning.  I took a couple breaths and the tickle came back even worse.  I don’t have any idea how many times I sneezed but it must have been over a hundred.  Finally the manager took me by the elbow and led me to the bathroom.”
“The bathroom?” I ask.  “I would have thought maybe outside.”
“Yeah, well, I was still so overcome by this awful sneezing fit I was hardly in a position to ask.  Anyway, once I got to the bathroom the sneezing finally settled down.  I blew my nose and washed my face and after a while I was ok, but it was still so embarrassing when I was paying and that same manager was there, and asked me if I was alright.”
“Aww, honey….that sounds awful.”  You’re done putting things away now, so I reach out to give you a kiss.  “You didn’t happen to notice what brand of detergent it was, did you?”
