2410Ar Posted June 16, 2019 Posted June 16, 2019 I started watching Asian dramas and I’ve realised that in majority of them there is this one episode with one of the main characters taking care of the other when he or she is sick. Is this some kind of the special “thing” for Asian people to take care of someone else ? And do you know some dramas with this kind of episodes because I’m super in love with them. 😂
•.*°•☆. Q .☆•°*.• Posted June 16, 2019 Posted June 16, 2019 this is a very common theme in every daytime tv drama, and it's kind of 🤔 to single out asian people/asian dramas if u ask me
Reader Posted June 16, 2019 Posted June 16, 2019 Most K-dramas are a bit different than American dramas. Whereas American dramas usually have more mature/adult themes, most K-dramas focus on the romance. Holding hands and kissing are major “blush-worthy” things and usually don’t happen until halfway through the season. There is also a formula used in K-dramas. The girl is poor, spunky, and pretty. The guy is rich and a jerk with an emotionally damaging past. And since K-dramas focus on the romantic and emotional aspects, caretaking is a perfect plot point. Whether that’s taking care of a drunk person—which is what I’ve seen mostly—or the rare cold.

Owlinatree Posted June 17, 2019 Posted June 17, 2019 I'm going to suggest that you more carefully consider the way you refer to demographics of people, and echo Q that this is a popular episode theme; you can google "sick episode" and see that it's a common trope in Western television as well.

Well I know there is such a thing as the “sick episode” but the frequency of occurrence of those episodes is so much bigger in Asian dramas than in other countries’ series’s. The same thing goes for anime.
•.*°•☆. Q .☆•°*.• Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 (edited) asia is not a country. asia contains many, many countries each with different cultures from one another. i think you might just not be as correct as you feel that you are, unfortunately. anyway, care-taking episodes are fairly frequent in a lot of country's daytime tv dramas (so much so that my favorite american daytime tv drama has had multiple instances where almost all of the characters the storyline was focusing on have either been sick or caring for someone who's sick across 2 or 3 consecutive episodes, like, several times over the course of the show's considerably long run) it's a fun trope that tv producers like to play with bc it gets people invested in romances. and i'll just say again that fetishizing one demographic of people is kinda not terrific. i sincerely recommend re-evaluating your feelings about asian people and cultures, and try to remember that they're just the same as any other peoples of the world, just born in a different location. peach Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 I mostly watch western tv/movies/series, but I'm close friends with real-life Japanese people They never showed any signs that care-taking was anything special for them, or that they took care more than people from other countries. Maybe it's just the easiest way to make characters fall in love? Kinda reminds me of 'Back to the Future', where Marty's mom fell in love with his dad by taking care of him after a car accident. I can't speak for Korea(s), China, and other Asian countries though.
