So recently I’ve been on a major Alec Benjamin kick, and one of his songs “If We Have Each Other” really spoke to me, making me really want to write something that reminded me of the lyrics. Alec’s songs are so beautiful and to me really tell a powerful story and they always put me in a good mood :) This is my second attempt at any original fiction so I apologize in advance for any error

———————————————————————————————————————————————

Part 1

It was nights like these were Marren wished she could be laying on the hood of a car watching the stars light up the sky.

It was nights like these where Marren wished she could lay on a tube as she floated in the lake feeling weightless.

It was nights like these where Marren wished she could be anywhere except under a tree studying for exams. It was only a month away and already she felt the panic rise in her chest as if settling in for a long stay.

It wasn’t that she didn’t like college, in fact quite the opposite. College gave her a chance to discover who she really was; a feat that never seemed possible within the high school walls.

She turned yet another page in her textbook on Poetry Origins, trying to make sense of the words in front of her face. She shined her flashlight against the words as she read them, but she was struggling to comprehend anything her eyes glazed over.

Slowly she felt her eyelids begin to fall shut, her head resting against a tree trunk. She knew she shouldn’t fall asleep, but she did little to fight the sensation overtaking her body.

The flashlight dropped from her fingertips and lazily rolled off of her textbook into the grass.

She wasn’t really sure how long she was asleep for before she awoke due to a loud noise coming from somewhere near by. Was it coughing?

She picked up the textbook out of her lap and laid it on the ground next to her. Carefully she grabbed her flashlight and scoped the area around the tree, gasping when it landed on another person.

It appeared to be a boy, clad in a navy blue hoodie and black Adidas sweatpants. The light was shining directly into his bright blue eyes, which at the moment were snapped shut.

h’etsh’EWW! Ugh. Could you maybe point the light not at my face?” he asked in a congested baritone voice, that was not too low, but instead rather smooth.

“Oh. I’m sorry,” Marren said, a bright pink blush spreading on her cheeks.

“Out studying this late?” he asked, noticing the textbook on the ground.

”Yeah,” Marren says with a tired sigh, “what are you doing up this late?” she asks.

”Came out here to get some fresh air, maybe get a chance to look at the stars a little,” the boy said, “obviously it was against better judgement,” he added, breaking off to cough in his fist.

”Are you okay?” Marren asked nervously.

”Peachy,” he said with a small grin. Marren noticed the fact that it was obviously the middle of November yet the boy was only in a cotton sweatshirt and without a coat. Definitely not smart for someone who was obviously getting sick.

It was sorta odd for Marren herself to be out on such a cold evening, but fortunately she was bundled in a jacket and a hat. She always studied outside, no matter the weather; it was sorta her thing.

”So, who in fact am I so lucky to be in the presence of?” the boy asks with a light sniff.

”My name’s Marren,” I say with a smile.

”Colby,” came the reply. I watched him struggle with a few hitching breaths before twisting to the side.

h’shh’IEWW! itsh’eww! huh’ETCH’eh! h—hn—“

“Bless—“ Marren started to say, but stopped short once she saw the finger he raised, indicating that he wasn’t finished.

h’aeshh’eww!” He punctuated his fit with a sniff.

”Bless you,” Marren says sympathetically.

”Thanks,” Colby says, obviously a tad embarrassed over the show he had put on.

”You probably shouldn’t be out here when it’s this cold,” Marren says.

”I could say the same for you,” Colby remarked, noting how I rubbed my hands together for warmth.

”How far back is your walk?” he asked me. The campus was pretty big, so your walk could range from two minutes to twenty.

“I guess around a fifteen minute walk,” I say, not looking forward to the treacherous walk back to my apartment with the wind blowing in my face, biting at my cheeks.

“I’m about three minutes this way,” Colby said pointing to his right, “why don’t you swing by my place first and get warmed up a little,” he said.

Part of Marren was skeptical of entering another person’s apartment when she had just met them a half hour ago. The other part of her was so numb she lost feeling throughout it.

”I-I don’t want to intrude or anything...” Marren said quickly.

”It’s fine. You may run in to my friend Sam though,” he added with a huff of laughter which quickly turned into a cough.

”I think I’ve run into him in a few of my classes before,” Marren says.

”Sam is majoring in English and Literature. I can assume you are as well?” Colby asks.

”About the same thing,” Marren says.

”I’m personally in the marketing and advertising field,” he says.

”That always sounded like a fun field,” Marren says.

”It is, but there’s a lot more to it than one may think—h’ITSHH’eww!”

“Bless you. We better get you inside, then,” Marren chirps, offering a hand to Colby. He accepts, hoisting himself up onto two rather shaky legs.

”You’re sure your good to walk?” she asks, watching him nervously.

“I’m fine,” he says.

“Okay,” Marren replies doubtfully, keeping an eye on the boy as she went to go grab her textbook off of the ground.

She allows Colby to lead the way to his apartment, only stopping once he reaches the door.

”I apologize if things are a bit messy...two boys in an apartment doesn’t exactly make he cleanest duo,” he says sheepishly.

”I’m sure it’s just fine,” Marren says kindly.

Colby brought a shaky hand up to the keyhole, twisting it until the door clicked. He paused as his hand rested on the door handle, sneezing into his shoulder.

“h’nntsh’eww! hih’ETSCH’eww! h’tsch’uu! h—huh’ktsh’eww!”

“Bless,” Marren said, voice full of sympathy.

Now that she got a better look at Colby she saw that he had dark brown hair that was just long enough to fall a little in his eyes. His skin was pale, especially in the face—no doubt due to the illness. His blue eyes were glazed over and appeared a little hazy. Marren noticed the dark circles under his eyes, and the rawness around his nose and lips.

Still, though, she couldn’t help but feel butterflies in her stomach as she glanced in his direction. Every time her green eyes met his warm blue eyes her chest tightened and time seemed to stop. She supposed now wasn’t the fairest time to make her assumptions of him anyways given that he was sick and all.

He pushed open his apartment door, stepping aside so Marren could go in. She sighed in relief as heat washed over her chilled frame, her cheeks still burning from the cold.

”It feels so much better in here,” Marren says with a content smile.

 “Definately,” Colby said in agreement.

“Want me to make us some hot cocoa?” he asks, biting back a cough.

”If your feeling up to it,” Marren replies.

”I’m fine,” Colby reassured, trudging into the kitchen to pull out to mugs. Marren entered the apartment more fully, seating herself in an armchair close to the fire.

It felt good to have the heat radiating in her direction, the flame’s cracking almost creating a soothing lullaby. She felt her eyes drift close, her breathing growing deep and steady.

“Marren.” Her eyes snapped open as a mug of hot cocoa was placed in her hands. Marshmallows floated at the top, bobbing around while slowly melting into the chocolate drink.

”Thanks,” she said gratefully, relishing the warmth it brought to her hands.

Marren noticed a desperately sneezy expression cross Colby’s features. Quickly she set her mug down and took the one out of his hands right as he snapped foward.

h’ETSH’eww! hn’shh’oo! AESHH’eww! hn’tshh’eww’h!”

“Bless you,” I say, handing the mug back into his hands.

”Ugh. Thanks,” he said tiredly.

”Do you always sneeze in fours?” Marren asked with a giggle.

”Pretty much,” Colby replies with a smile.

And if it were possible in that moment Colby in the navy blue sweatshirt and black Adidas sweats got even cuter.

This story gets me excited! Than you! Hope you will continue 😊

So sorry about the fact that I wrote bits of Marren’s lines in the first person😅 It was late. Really excited for this story and can’t wait to continue!

———————————————————————————————————————————————

Marren set her finished mug of hot cocoa on the coffee table, carefully inspecting the digital clock on Colby’s microwave.

The numbers blared back at her like a siren, as if alerting her that she’d stuck around far too long.

She glanced back at Colby noticing the way he carefully massaged his temples working his way to the bridge of his nose.

”Headache?” Marren asked.

Colby nodded his head slightly, slowly blinking his eyes back open.

”Maybe some meds would do you good. You have any ibuprofen or something?” Marren asked, carefully making her way over towards Colby.

She laid a hand to his forehead before he could protest.

“Feels a bit warm,” she commented.

”There’s some ibuprofen in t—h’isshh’eww! ETSCH’ieww! in my bathroom s—h’ishheww! tschh’eww! somewhere,” Colby said with a sniff. He grabbed a tissue, covering the lower half of his face.

”Bless you,” Marren said. She went in search for Colby’s bathroom, thankful that the room’s door was cracked open.

She located the medicine cabinet and grabbed the bottle of ibuprofen and a bottle of NyQuil figuring that a little sleep would do his body some justice.

It was strange how just two hours ago she was sitting under a tree studying for exams, and now here she was standing in the middle of a boy’s apartment.

She went out to his kitchen grabbing a fresh glass out from the cabinet. She filled it with water and brought it over to Colby along with the pills.

He took them eagerly, no doubt in anticipation for the headache to go away. More reluctantly though he downed the dose of NyQuil.

”God, this tastes horrible,” Colby said, cringing.

”But it works wonders,” Marren said in return.

He set the empty medicine cup down, laying back on the couch.

h’itshh’eww! t’etshh’eww! huh’ITSHH’eww!”

Bless you,” Marren remarked.

”Than-h’ITSCHH’eww! Thanks,” he said sniffing thickly.

”Sorry I’mb sudch a bad host,” Colby mumbled congestedly.

”Your sick. I’m not asking you to be a good host,” Marreb said with a small smile.

”Trust me, I’m not this bad when I’m not sick,” Colby reassured. Marren laughed, bringing the used glasses from the evening to the sink.

”Look, I should probably get going,” Marren said. Truthfully she didn’t want to go, but it felt wrong to stay so long with someone she barely even knew.

”No! Don’t!” Colby said a little to loud. Marren raised her eyebrows.

”I mean, unless you have somewhere to be, or something,” Colby added in with a bright blush spreading on his cheeks.

”Colby, I’ve obviously overstayed my welcome. You need sleep and I need to study,” Marren said.

”I mean I guess if you have to go it’s just...” Marren waited for Colby one finish, but he never did. She watched a frown slowly etch into his expression.

”I’ll make a deal with you. One episode on tv and then lights out for you and hone for me,” Marren said thoughtfully.

“Deal,” Colby said with a smile.

Marren took a seat on the couch with Colby and grabbed the remote, flipping through channels. When the tv landed on Food Network Colby seemed to perk up a little.

The channel was halfway through an episode of Chopped. Marren was cringing at some of the the ingredients the contestants had to use: blueberries, prosciutto, dragon fruit, coconut flour, and squid. She giggled as the contestants raced for the clock, glaring at their strange

After a while she felt a heavy wait drop on her shoulder, slowly drifting to her lap. Colby was sound asleep.

Marren didn’t want to stay and accidentally wake up Colby or end up staying the night.

Marren went off to Colby’s bedroom and grabbed a pillow, bringing it back to rest his head on. She also spread out the thick fuzzy blanket over Colby’s legs.

He stirred, coughing lightly, but slowly went back to sleep.

Marren scribbled our a note explaining that she left and to call if he needed anything.

She gave Colby’s hair a quick ruffle, smiling at his tousled bedhead hair. She knew it was probably wrong to obsess over a boy she just met a few hours ago. She knew it was probably wrong to think about his warm blue eyes and how they absolutely melted her heart in every way. If that were the case then Marren did not want to be right.

Slowly she cracked open his front door, met face to face with a boy about Colby’s age with sandy brown hair and brown eyes.

“Hi there. I’m Sam,” the boy said extending out a hand.

“Hi there, I’m Sam,” the boy said extending out a hand.

Marren looked up to meet his warm brown eyes, welcoming and sweet like melted chocolate.

“Hi, I’m Marren,” she said in return.

”I’m sorry if I’m wrong, but I don’t remember ever seeing you around here,” Sam said.

“Yeah...I’m uh taking an English Major so I’m in the other apartment complex, but I just met Colby tonight.” Marren averted her eyes shyly. When she said it out loud it sounded silly to be staying so long with a boy that she just met.

”I see you met my roommate then,” Sam said. “Sorry if he was a little off-putting. He doesn’t get out much.”

”He’s quite charming actually,” Marren said quietly.

”That may be, but when it comes to grocery shopping that boy is a bust,” Sam said with a laugh.

”Speaking of grocery shopping, you may want to go out and get some extra tissue boxes and medicine. Colby seems to be a little on the sick side,” Marren said.

”Figures as much. He didn’t seem to well when I left the apartment earlier.”

Sam cracked open the front door to find a lump of blankets and pillows on the couch, peppered with crumbled tissues and empty water bottles.

”How long did you say you were here again?” Sam asked.

”Since probably around eight o’clock I guess,” Marren said.

”Gosh how did you manage that long? Colby is horrible company when he’s sick,” Sam said.

”It wasn’t all that bad,” Marren said with a small laugh.

“You don’t have to lie,” Sam said with a smile.

”Well, I best be going. Don’t want to intrude on your, uh, care taking.”

”See you later, Marren,” Sam said, pulling off his sweatshirt hood to reveal disheveled sandy hair.

“Oh, and can you tell Colby to call me when he gets up?” Marren asked hopefully.

”Sure thing,” Sam said.

Marren walked down the apartment complex stairs and out to the parking lot. She walked with her books and flashlight tucked under her arm, smiling to herself about her small fantasy of an evening.

Colby was nice, seemingly everything she wanted for herself at the time; but something about their evening encounter didn’t seem right. Maybe Colby didn’t feel the same way.

Marren’s mind buzzed with possibility that made her both bubble over with excitement and curl up in fear of tomorrow. She knew she would see Colby again, but right now she needed to focus on getting Colby back on his feet.

They were just friends Marren reminded herself. Just friends.

The next morning Marren’s eyes snapped open to the sound of a ringing phone. She glanced at her alarm clock. 7:45??!

She hit answer, butterflies swirling in her stomach as she was met with Colby’s congested voice.

She agreed to meet at his place by 8:15, giving her only about a half hour to get ready. She scrambled around frantically, running out her front door. She walked up the stairs to Colby’s apartment, knocking on the door.

Sam from last night answered with a tired sigh.

“Marren, is that you?” he asked with a yawn.

”The one and only,” she replied, entering the apartment. She set down her bag and went over to where Colby was on the couch.

”I’m back upon request,” she said with a small laugh.

”I’m glad you c-huh—came—h’ITSCH’eww!”

Bless you!” Both Sam and Marren said in unison.

“Thags,” Colby said behind a tissue.

Both of the boys were still in their pajamas, and Marren felt a little sorry for waking up Sam.

”Can I interest you boys in some coffee?” Marren offered.

“Sounds great!” Colby said happily.

”Thanks Marren, but your a guest here and we will not be having you serve coffee for us,” Sam said with a pointed glare towards Colby.

”It’s really no trouble. I feel sorry for waking you, Sam, and I’m afraid Colby is a little worse for wear.”

“If you insist, the coffee is in the top drawer,” Sam said tiredly.

”Sounds good,” Marren said, grabbing three mugs.

h’ISTCH’eww! hshh’EEWW!”

Bless you,” Marren said from the kitchen.

”Than—hish’EWW!”

Bless you!” Sam said coming back into the room with a sweatshirt on.

Marren brought out the steaming mugs and handed them to the boys with a smile.

She carefully sipped hers and thought back on the past two days. Things were so different than what she envisioned for herself at the start of the semester. She should have been studying, but instead here she was making coffee for a sick boy she just met.

It was crazy what love could do to you, especially love that made your insides melt and mind bend inside out.

Marren knew they could only really be friends, but deep down she never wanted her little fantasy to end.

Part 4

When a chill traveled up Marren’s spine she wasn’t sure if the steady breeze or her nerves was to blame. It could have been the fact that it was nearing 32 degrees outside, or it could have been the fact that her clammy hand rested on the brass door handle to Sam and Colby’s apartment seemingly paralyzed in time.

She inhaled deeply, putting the waves that crashed within her to a cease. She shouldn’t be nervous. She was simply a friend helping out a friend. They were mutual, basic, acquaintances. Nothing more.

She turned the handle and stepped in the doorway relishing the heat she was met with.

”Colby? Sam? Are you awake?” Marren asked entering more fully into the apartment.

h’ITTSCH’eww! tssh’EWW’h” I guess that answered her question.

”Good morning to you, too,” Marren said jokingly.

Colby groaned, wrapping his blanket tighter around his shoulders.

”What’s wrong?” Marren asked softly.

”Hurts,” Colby mumbled.

”Where?” Marren asked.

”Everywhere,” Colby said stifling a few coughs in the folds of the blanket.

Marren lifted a hand to Colby’s forehead, clicking her tongue at the heat she was met with.

”Your a little warm,” Marren notes out loud.

”Well I feel like I rolled around in the snow for ten minutes and then took an ice bath,” he said.

”How about some medicine?” Marren suggested hopefully. To her dismay she was quickly shot down with a head shake and a pout.

”Well I’m going to get a glass of water,” Marren announces getting up.

”N-no! Don’t go,” Colby said tiredly.

”Why not? It’ll only be for one second,” Marren said. Colby didn’t want to admit it, but he wanted to tell Marren to hug him tight and never let go. But it didn’t matter, she probably didn’t feel the same way.

”I’m sorry—it’s just...your warm, and it’s freezing,” Colby said blushing.

”Marren couldn’t help but feel all giddy on the inside, even if it was most likely the fever talking.

”okay, okay I won’t go,” Marren said.

“Goo—hih’essh’ieww! etssh’EWW!”

Bless you,” Marren offered.

”Ugh. Sorry I’m so disgusting,” Colby said with distaste. The one time he gets a girl and he has snot running down his face. There’s no way she likes him now.

”Don’t be. We can’t all be pretty when we’re stuck with a snotty cold and a fever,” Marren said.

”ha—Thanks,” Colby said with a snicker.

”How about a movie?” Marren asked.

”S-sounds—huh—good—h’ISSHH’eww!”

“Bless you.”

”Thags,” Colby said grabbing a tissue.

”How’s the Hunger Games sound?” Marren asked flipping through channels.

”Fine,” Colby said.

Marren dimmed the lights in the tv room and grabbed a blanket from Colby’s room before settling down on the couch. It felt weird to be all snuggled in on the couch, when all she’d ever have is his friendship. She did her best to keep her feelings bottled up. The last thing she needed was Colby finding out the truth.

Colby slowly made his way to laying in Marren’s lap. She, of course, made no effort to move, allowing the sick boy to slide into her lap.

“Did you know that the dandelion is a symbol of hope here?” Marren asked Colby.

”And how is that?” Colby asked with a smile.

”Because Katniss saw Peeta by a field of dandelions when he saved her from starving to death.”

”So, it’s sort of like developing a hope for humanity?” Coby asked sleepily.

”Exactly,” Marren said with a smile.

”Huh. I love it when you talk English to me,” Colby said.

”Well you hear it enough from Sam, right?” Marren asked curiously.

”Yeah...but it sounds less nerdy coming from your mouth,” Colby said with a laugh.

”Uhh—Thanks?” Marren said, laughing.

h’ITSSHH’eww! h’aeshh’EWW! That’s a complement. Take it,” Colby said with a smile.

”Sir, Yes, sir!” Marren said with a salute.

”You don’t have to pretend like it was good,” Colby said with a smirk.

”And you don’t have to pretend like you aren’t tired. Your face is practically dripping with drowsiness.”

”Hmm..there’s that figurative language again,” Colby said smiling, his eyes fluttering closed.

”I thought you said you didn’t know English!” Marren said.

”I’m full of surprises.” Colby said. And secrets. Marren just couldn’t find out. She just wouldn’t see it like he did.

Marren closed her eyes and sighed. She wanted to be closer to Colby which each passing tick on the clock, but she restrained herself.

She didn’t have a shot so there was no point in shooting.

I’m back everyone! 😅 thank you so much for all the lovely comments!

———————————————————————————————————————————————

Marren woke up on a couch with her head resting on Colby? God, she must have fallen asleep watching the movie. She glanced at Colby, who was sleeping peacefully.

Marren watched his chest rise and fall, his cheeks flushed and his hair sweaty. It was obvious he had a fever still, but Marren didn’t have the heart to wake Colby up.

Sam was sitting at the kitchen island typing away at his laptop, glaring at the screen. Part of her wanted to sink back down into the couch and close her eyes, with clicking keys and Colby’s heartbeat as a lullaby.

The other, more realistic side of her felt selfish to fall back asleep in an apartment that wasn’t hers next to a boy who was no doubt a little worse for wear.

Her decision making was put on hold at the sound of rustling blankets next to her.

h’ETSSH’eww!” “tsshh’EWW!” Colby released the explosions into the folds of his blanket, coughing roughly in the aftermath.

”Take it easy,” Marren said softly, handing Colby a glass of water to sip on.

He sipped the drink with shaking hands, the water landing more onto his lap than into his mouth.

”Thanks for saving me,” he choked out.

”Saving you from what?” Marren asked with a giggle.

”Death,” Colby said.

”Colby, you are not dying!” Marren said with a smile.

“Well it sure feels like it,” he replied.

Marren shook her head, resting the back of her hand on his forehead.

”Seems pretty hot,” Marren said with a mix of disappointment and disapproval. She was hoping he would’ve improved by today, but Colby only seemed to get worse.

”I know, I know; but tell me about the fever,” Colby said with a grin.

”Oh be quiet,” Marren said blushing, playfully slapping him on the arm.

h’ITSCHH’eww! “h—h’ITSSHH’ieww!” “huh—hn.....esshh’EWW!”

“Ugh, sorry, I guess that wasn’t exactly quiet,” Colby said with a sheepish grin.

”Not quite,” Marren said handing him a tissue.

”Bless you, man. I’m surprised we haven’t gotten an eviction notice yet with all the racket you’ve caused,” Sam said with a laugh.

“Sorry, dude,” Colby said.

”Apologize to poor Marren over here. You’ve probably snot-rocketed her like ten times already.”

”No really, it’s okay—I’m okay,” Marren reassured. She didn’t want Colby feeling bad for being sick; he couldn’t control that.

”Whatever you say. Just...don’t feel pressured to stay. This isn’t my first rodeo dealing with a sick Colby,” Sam said.

”I do not get sick they often, Sam!” Colby shouted with a pout.

”What about what happened last Christmas Colby? You know, with the mall Santa?”

“That was just ironic!” Colby whined.

”Well now you have to tell me!” Marren exclaimed. Colby tucked his head in his hands, hiding the embarrassment on his face.

”Wait till you here this,” Sam said with a laugh.

“Go on,” Marren said, eager to hear a story about Colby. She wouldn’t say it out loud, but seeing him embarrassed was beyond adorable.

”We were present shopping in the mall last Christmas to buy a few last minute gifts and I got Colby to get in line to sit on the mall santa’s lap for a picture.”

”It was a dare!” Colby shouted behind his hands, “h’AESHH’eww! etshh’EWW’h!”

“Bless you,” Marren and Sam said in unison.

”Sorry,” Colby muttered, resting his head in his arms.

“Anyways, Colby got in line and then it was finally his turn to get a picture. The mall Santa honestly looked annoyed beyond belief to have a college kid come sit on his lap, but he followed up with the normal procedure anyways,” Sam explained.

”God! Just get it over with already!” Colby pleaded desperately.

“So...the mall Santa finally asks Colby what he wanted for Christmas—and Colby, being the dork that he is, decided to sneeze in that moment.”

”And? Is that it?” Marren asked with a raised eyebrow.

”This is the best part. The next morning Colby wakes up with a terrible head cold, so Colby got what he asked for: a terribly sneezy head cold that lasted for weeks.”

Marren burst out laughing, Sam joining in. Colby just buried his face deeper into his arms.

”Sorry—I don’t mean to laugh, but oh my God that’s too freaking good,” Marren said cracking up all over again.

“Like I said; it’s just ironic,” Colby said irritably.

”Awe, it’s okay Colby. I think the story was rather cute,” Marren said in an attempt to make up for her reaction.

H’ITSHH’eww! tsshh’EWW! h—hn’ETSSH’ieww! AESSHH’eww!”

Jesus, Bless you,” Sam said.

”Bless you. Take it easy,” Marren said soothingly.

hih—h’TSSHH’eww! Ugh. Thanks,” Colby said grabbing a tissue.

”You think we should get you to a doctor?” Sam asked with a concerned tone.

”Relax man, just a little head cold,” Colby reassured.

”Doesn’t sound like just a ‘little head cold’,” Marren said with crossed arms.

”Guys—seriously...I’m fine,” Colby said.

”Fine, but if that fever doesn’t break soon you’re going to a Doctor,” Marren reasoned.

”Fine.” Colby broke off into a series of rough coughs, barely able to pause for air.

”That doesn’t sound to good either,” Sam said.

”I’ll be better in a few days. Then I’ll take us all out for breakfast on me,” Colby said with a smile.

”I’m fine by that,” Sam said with a grin.

”Touché,” Marren said. She hoped Colby was right when he said a few more days. The last thing everyone needed was to be caught up in a mess. She had midterms to study for, and Sam was caught up between work and school.

“Please go to bed though, Colby. Seriously. You need to get better and that can’t happen while you’re running around,” Marren instructed.

”Okay, Mom,” Colby said sarcastically.

“Will you be back tomorrow then?” Sam asked.

“Sure thing,” Marren said trying to hide her smile. So it was set: Marren could come back the next day and fantasize some more about Colby. She wanted to tell him how she felt, but she’d wait until he felt better.

She sure hoped he’d be better soon, because she wasn’t sure how much longer she could stand her emotions being bottled up.
