Why did people use snuff years ago?

I was wondering... You know, from many books/movies I know what snuff (sniffing tobacco or whatever you call it) is, and that people used to actually use it. Off the top of my head, I immediately remember Gulliver's Travels in Lilliput, where the tiny people accidentally found his snuff and tried to figure out what it was 🙈 I also know that snuff was still being produced even last century (at least in the USSR), and all that makes me wonder: WHY

Why did people just want to... like... sneeze? 😅😅😅 *nervous laughter*

P. S. Also, do you think chhinkni is a kind of snuff?

Ok, I'm dumb, I've just researched it and realized that it affected people the same way as usual smoking tobacco (?) 

Nobody ever bothered to explain that in the books/movies 😂😂😂

Now I wonder if people sneeze from everything they snort to get high - like cocaine?

usually it's considered an amateur move to do so, bc if you do then you lose a lot of the potency of the substance. anyway, drugs are not sexy, and neither is substance addiction
