Allergy sneezes on vacation

I went on vacation and my girlfriend to Spain, and in between running around in the hot sun, dusty streets, and light changes, there were a bunch of great obs from my girlfriend and a few from myself. It also seems that Southern Europeans are pretty open about sneezing.

Jumping on the Madrid metro to catch a tour in a different part of the city, my girlfriend and I snagged some seats on a pretty crowded subway. As I looked on my phone for directions on our stop, my girlfriend looked over my shoulder at my phone. She sniffed, and balled up a fist, holding it a few inches away from her face. She sneezed two sneezes, HACHHEEWWW, quickly followed by another cheeeeew. I felt the air blow across my arm, and drops of snot hit my knee. I blessed her, a bit curious if anyone in the crowded metro would care that a tourist sneezed practically uncovered, but no one seemed to notice.

It seems as though sneezing openly is pretty common in Spain. My favorite sighting was a family, Spanish-speaking, but clearly also tourists to the city. They were confusedly walking on the train platform in the direction of the exit, when the middle age mother slowed down. I almost walked into her, when she held up her right hand like a fan perpendicular to her face (even though people were walking to both her right and left, and sneezed hard HAAARCHHOOOO. She sniffed wetly, and kept walking. Her family made no comment and they kept on moving. 

Finally, walking in the park one late afternoon, I felt a tickle in my nose. Given that it was just the two of us, I turned my head slightly to the side and sneezed over my shoulder HEEHCeeewwww haacchewwwwwwww, the second sneeze just seeming to spray on forever. Turning my head back, my girlfriend commented, "watering the flowers, I see." I was a little flustered. She knows about my fetish, but generally doesn't appreciate a shower herself. "Did I spray you?" I asked sheepishly. "No, it just sounded really wet." she replied.
