Drinking and Sneezing

[Mods - discussion about the effect of alcohol on sneezing - please move to Adult section if you deem it appropriate]

I am curious to hear of anyone here finds that drinking alcohol can send them into sneezing fits? I am pretty sure this is a recognized thing, and although not being a sneezy person myself, red wine can certainly make me sneeze more than I would expect when I partake, and usually 4 or 5 times in a row rather than my habitual 3 :D

I recently met with some people who had just left a pub, and told me that they had had to leave because a member of their party (a girl about 25 who was sniffing heavily) had 'got the drunk sneezes'. They were all laughing about it and I managed to take this in my stride...just

So does anyone here get affected in the same way? Is it a particular type of drink that affects you and do the type of sneezes it induces differ from your normal sneeze?

It has happened on a couple of occasions, but it doesn't seem to follow any specific pattern. Except it being red wine. But the grape, the amount, and the circumstances have been different. And other times I drink red wine, the exact same label and everything, and nothing happens. What I can say is that the sneezes brought on by alcohol tend to be more violent and unrestrained, but that could just as well be because I'm under the influence. Not sure.

Sadly, both my parents tend to get it as well. Mom almost always, nowadays, though I can't remember that happening when I was younger. Ugh. Moving on.

I have witnessed it going out as well; I don't go out anymore, but when I was at a wine and chocolate exhibition, there was a woman who just kept on sneezing. She must have sneezed several hundred times over the course of the evening. I was unfortunately there with my sister so I had to do everything I could to not reveal how much I wanted to go on a hunt for this sneezy lady. :glare:

Yes, it does happen to me! Almost always when I drink white wine, and sometimes with red wine. Apparently it has to do (at least for me) with a minor allergy to sulphite present into the wine. When I drink wine without sulphite, I don't feel sneezy at all.

I usually sneeze single sneezes (very rarely 2, and fits only once every two or three years, when I have a very, very bad cold) but when I've been drinking some wine, I can sneeze 5 to 10 times in a row. Not actual "fits", as the snezes are... "spaced out"? Is that correct to say it that way? (Once every 20 or 30 seconds, with a constant itch and lots of hitching, something that doesn't usually happen to me.)

That's something I wonder, too.

The first sip of alcohol can trigger a sneeze sometimes, like dark chocolate, sun, or strong mint gum. I've never had a fit from drinking, but I 100% agree with this.

@Chanel_no5I knew of someone once who got the maaaajor sneezes from chocolate, so chocolate plus wine equals double sensitivity for some people I guess? Ohhhh, this is fiction material right here. I mean chocolate plus wine equals delight in any case, but with the sneeze-trigger element involved... huzz.

I’ve seen it happen to people in my family, which is kind of a shame because, well, family. I don’t get it myself, but I might occasionally get a kind of pre sneeze tickle from  strong spirits.

Wine and chocolate exhibition = the perfect date?

(also, fyi, one of the chocolates we got to try had three types of pepper in them. Black pepper, rose pepper, and one more that I can't remember now. You'd think pepper doesn't belong in a chocolate bar? WRONG! )

I believe this to be quite a common condition.

And I am sure good number of sneezy youtube vids are the result of a reaction to alcohol, often without the sneezer being aware of the reason.

I won't put the links up but 2 classics are: Drunken seeing in Australia and Attack of the sneeze. Both Female I should add.

Of course an absolute classic is this newspaper story https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/2700365/Wine-causes-sneezing-fits-in-allergic-student.html (Female)

Personally I have known (and witnessed) 2 people (both female) who have had a reaction: one who sussed the connection and one who had not.

PS Sorry, not sure why that link is dead. Anyway, if you google 'Red wine causes sneezing fits in allergic student' you'll find it.

Oh yes, I remember reading that article now - thanks for that :D With the YouTube videos, I'm never sure whether its the alcohol causing the sneezing, or whether they are being less inhibited while sneezing due to its effects.

Before my husband and I were married (many, many years ago) I stayed over his house and I was drinking red wine. It made me sneeze. I had wine in my mouth and it went all over his ivory-colored walls. I ended up painting that room 😂

Interesting - is it a certain amount of red wine or different for everyone?

i have had that 20 - 30 seconds apart with hitching sneezes randomly happen. It is so hard to hold back and I wish I could find more things that make me sneeze like that, as it’s definitely my favorite.

I’ve witnessed that phenomenon quite a few times, but unfortunately those affected have mostly been old people :poorfool:.
