Elody and Jayde

Hello everyone! So I have not written anything in quite a while... But I recently created a new character for roleplay purposes and ended up on a creativity spree. So, I basically wrote a whole story. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy it. Feedback is always welcomed. I attached a few pictures as character references. Keep in mind, the artwork is NOT MINE. The art belongs to it's respective creator, I am simply showing it as a general reference for the idea of how the characters look.

The massive mahogany front door swung open as Elody entered the dwelling. Her black heels clicked on the lovely dark wooden floor as she moved to set down her briefcase and hang her keys upon their designated hook. There was a weariness in her usually pristine appearance and composure; her silvery blonde hair had several loose strands curling around her face, her neatly tucked blouse and pencil skirt were both wrinkled from a day of work, and there was a subtle slight pinkness to her pert nose.
Sighing softly, Elody clicked down the hall into the kitchen where she made her way immediately toward the wine rack. A rich merlot was selected from their stock and a generous glass was poured within moments.
“Rough day?” Echoed a voice from the dining room where Jayde sat with a cluster of papers strewn before her.

“No more than usual.” Came the casual response as El paced into the dining room, pausing to lean against the archway between the kitchen and dining area. Her slender physique was accentuated by the tightly drawn belt between her blouse and snug skirt. “Reynolds is just trying to snipe one of my cases… again. That prick seems to think the office is his for the ruling. But, he has another thing coming.”

“That so?” Jayde asked, looking up and sliding her reading glasses off of her face. “Does this mean you’ll be working late again?” There was a tone to her voice that El did not appreciate.

El sighed, exasperated. “I only have a few briefs to review and a proposal to draft. Shouldn’t be later than midnight.”

The unamused expression plastered over Jayde's face suggested her disbelief. “Midnight? Look at you… What you really need is-”

El cut her off, “Don’t you dare tell me I need rest.” Her tone was sharp and irritated.

“-rest.” Jayde finished irritably. “Darling, you are going to wear yourself out.”

“This damned conversation is going to wear me out!” Elody snapped back. “Unbelievable.” She snorted, turning to pace back into the kitchen with the wine glass lifted to her plump lips. Jayde seemed keen on mothering her, which would be endearing if El’s mind wasn’t consumed with the stress of work. How could she slow down? She didn’t have time to slack off and rest when there were others in the firm threatening her position. She hadn’t worked this hard to have everything swept away by some cocky man with a big mouth and blatant disregard for her.

She could hear Jayde rising from the table to tail her into the kitchen. “All I’m saying is that work shouldn’t be your top priority all the time. You should prioritize yourself once and awhile! Hell, it would be nice if you prioritized me once and awhile!”

El set her wine glass heavily on the marble counter and reeled around. “I should, hmm? You saying I don’t care about you because I work hard?” Her tone was accusatory and blunt.
Jayde threw her hands in the air dramatically. “Sometimes I wonder if you love your work more than you love me.” She replied angrily. With her brow furrowed and freckled nose wrinkled, Jayde pointed toward the fridge. “You’re dinner is in there, again.” She hissed before wheeling around and stomping down the hall.

Elody glared after her partner for a moment longer before releasing a soft sigh. Her delicate fingers pinched the bridge of her nose as he squeezed her eyes shut in effort to stave off the rising headache. She just needed to get some documents in order then she could head to the bedroom and apologize.

Hours slipped by as Elody sat on the living room couch working tirelessly into the night. Documents were stacked here and there on the coffee table and the couch, the TV hummed quietly across the room, and her laptop was perched on her lap. El scrubbed at her nose periodically as she worked, her attention hyper focused on her work.

Pausing, she glanced away from the screen and suddenly jolted with a rough half-stifled sneeze into the crook of her elbow. Elody shook her head irritably as the movement had angered her now throbbing headache. She assumed it was from the continued focus and work late into the evening. When she finally finished up it was nearly 3:00am… much later than her original prediction of midnight.

“I will get more sleep after the deposition tomorrow.” She mumbled to herself. El glanced up at the TV and watched the commercials for a few moments. Perhaps she could get through one last document…

Morning light stretched through the large windows as birdsong chittered just outside. Jayde was up early in hopes to catch a morning run before heading to the studio. The 8:00am pilates class she taught always seemed to go smoother when she’d had a good brisk run first. While pouring a cup of tea she heard a sniffle from the living room. Not entirely surprised since she had woken up alone in bed that morning, Jayde padded into the living room and found Elody curled on the couch. She was still wearing her work blouse and skirt from the day before. A flash of irritation passed over Jayde at El’s recklessness, but it quickly evaporated when she heard the subtle congested sniffle from El again. Quietly, she knelt down beside her lover and placed her hand upon El’s shoulder.

“Good morning Workaholic.” She cooed teasingly.

Elody’s long lashes fluttered open. “Huh… Oh, I must have fallen asleep.” She hummed as she sat up slowly.

            “I’d say so.” Jayde replied.

El ran a hand gingerly through her hair while glancing at the neat piles of work documents around her. “Listen… I am sorry-” she paused to make eye contact with Jayde, “-about last night. I didn’t mean to snap at you. I’m just…”

Jayde exhaled softly, “Stressed out? I know… You’ve been working really hard these last few weeks and I think it’s had a toll on us both. I didn’t mean to irritate you either… I just care about you, that’s all.” She smiled lightly and reached over to tuck a strand of Elody’s silvery blonde hair behind her ear.

“Yes. Tell you what.” El righted herself on the couch and took Jayde’s hands in her own. “Tonight, I’ll take you out to make up for it. It’s Friday, after all, and we can go dancing if you’d like.”

“I’d love that.” Jayde replied with a smile. Leaning over, she tenderly gave her lover a kiss. “I’m just heading out for a run. It’s about 6:00am now. Breakfast when I get back?”

El shook her head as a surprised expression swept over her crisp features. “I have to head to work. I’ve really only got time for a quick shower. But, I will see you tonight.”

Elody readied herself quickly for work and, as promised, was gone before Jayde returned. She entered the office with her hair pulled up, her make-up perfectly touched up, and a freshly pressed feminine suit highlighting her lovely womanly physique. There was a subtle scratchiness to her throat that she was quelling with coffee and her headache had persisted from the night before, but nonetheless she appeared perfectly composed. Elody shot a snide smirk toward Reynolds as she made her way into her office and closed the door to finish final preparations for the deposition. That guy really irked her.

There came a rapt at her door not long after she’d settled in.

            “Enter.” El called.
It was her receptionist, Mindy, with a list of phone calls for her to return and a few updates on some research El had requested.

“Thank you, Mindy. Any updates on the-” El faded off suddenly as a shuddery breath foretold the surprise sneeze that had overthrown her. Turning her upper half away, El battled with the sneeze for a few seconds before pinching her nose and bobbing her head in a nearly silent sneeze. She promptly grabbed a tissue from the box she kept hidden in her desk drawer and apologized to Mindy. “-I’m sorry, on my requested meeting with Mr. Hemton?” She finished.
“Bless you. Yes, he is available today at 4:15pm. But I was told it would need to be brief.”

“I’m always punctual and to the point. It shouldn’t take more than fifteen minutes. Thank you, Mindy.” Elody replied before offering a dismissive gesture for the receptionist to take her leave. “Oh, one last thing. If you could find me some ibuprofen that would be appreciated. Thank you.” She smiled as the receptionist nodded and slid out the door.

Once alone again, El pinched the bridge of her nose and sagged slightly in her chair. The headache from the night before still loomed, she could feel it pulsing outward from her sinuses up into her forehead. She groaned softly, taking just thirty seconds to herself, before righting and refocusing on her work.

The deposition came and went with relative ease. Elody had been well prepared for it, however she found her headache had intensified during the course of the deposition. The ibuprofen Mindy had fetched earlier helped a little. She noticed her nose was being affected now as well. Throughout the deposition she was forced to stifle three sneezes and was battling a fourth as she headed back toward her office.
“Nice work in there, for such a young female prosecutor that is.” The obnoxious voice of Reynolds caught her ears as El paused to wait for the elevator. A spark of irritation sizzled within. She refused to glance toward him even as the fellow lawyer came to a halt in front of the elevator beside her.

“Thank you.” She replied curtly. Her nostrils flared as the tickle from earlier was returning with high demands. She could feel the prickling sensation high up in her sinuses.

“C’mon, El. You and I both know that I’m the better fit for that case. The family wanted a prosecutor with more experience. That just isn’t you.” He pressed, his tone demeaning.

El’s fingers tightened around her briefcase as she battled both the pending sneeze and the urge to lash out at the obnoxious fool beside her. “I am certain they will be pleased with my work.” She replied. Reynolds began to respond but she didn’t hear as she was forced to turn away with her breath beginning to hitch. “Hih….Huh...Hihtchxxt!” Much to her despair, El was unable to completely stifle the sneeze. She straightened herself and cleared her throat while turning back to face Reynolds. He did not offer a ‘bless you’, not that she expected one.
“I will see you in the meeting later today.” She stated bluntly. As if on cue, the elevator arrived. Heels clicking, Elody entered the elevator and turned around to face the irritable expression plastered across Reynold’s face. Apparently he had not realized that is was she who had called for the meeting with their Managing Partner, Mr. Hemton. She smiled tightly and added, “This elevator is full. Best wait for the next one.” To her relief, Reynolds didn’t bother to board with her. Rather, he turned away just as the doors closed and El was left alone for a few moments.

With a soft groan, El rubbed a finger tenderly under her nose as the tickle reared again. She was relieved to have a few moments alone. As the elevator surged upward, Elody geared up for another sneeze. This time she didn’t bother to stifle them. “Hih...Hehheh… HEHtchiew! Itchiew! Huhittchiew!” The last sneeze had her stumbling to grab the railing just as the elevator began to slow. Before the doors opened, she had once again righted herself to a state of near perfection.

By the time 4:00pm rolled around, Elody’s headache had nearly quadrupled in intensity. She had begun struggling to focus as the hours wore past and now, with the meeting starting in fifteen minutes, she was barely able to focus on the papers before her. The sneezing had increased as well, but now her voice carried a subtle note of congestion.

“Ugh, Jayde is never going to let this one slide.” She mumbled to herself as she reached for her tissue box again. The kleenex was brought tenderly to her nose in attempt to avoid wiping away whatever makeup remained. But, El was certain the appendage was taking on a pinkish tinge. She cursed under her breath, unwilling to admit that Jayde might have been right. Just as she was gearing up for another sneeze, Mindy knocked on the door and peeked inside.
“Ms. Wylde, your meeting with Mr. Hemton is in ten minutes.”

“Th-thank you, Mindy.” El replied shakily, her breath snagging a few times before she doubled over with two painful half-stifled sneezes. “Hihh...Hihnnxxt! Nnxt!” She couldn’t help but groan softly as the pinched sneezes cause her head to spin and throb. Clearly, Mindy recognized her discomfort.

“If you’d like… I could request to reschedule?” Her tone was hesitant but her concern was clear.

“No, it’s alright. I’m finde.” El replied, the congestion becoming evident in her voice. Clearing her throat, Elody took one final dab at her nose, collected her documents, and made her way toward Mr. Hemton’s office.

“Thank you for arranging to see me on such short notice.” El greeted the rather striking man seated behind the large desk. Mr. Hemton was a broad shouldered man with a chiseled jawline, keen green eyes, tan skin, and dark black hair highlighted by feathering of gray along the sides. El had heard men of his stature and allure to be known as a Silver Fox; he was a man in his prime with plenty to show for it.

“Of course.” Mr. Hemton replied while gesturing for El to sit. “Please, Elody, you know you can call me Jason by now.” His wide white smile met her reserved grin.

“Certainly, Jason.” Elody replied. The pair small talked for a few minutes until Reynolds joined them. Elody made a point to check her watch and lift her eyebrows as if to silently say Wow, you’re three minutes late, Reynolds. He shot her a veiled glare in return.

“So, what is this about exactly? Your receptionist was relatively vague, El.” Jason prompted as he settled back in his seat.

“Well, I wanted to bring to your attention the hostile working conditions I have been subjected to. I pride myself on maintaining a professional disposition at work.” El began. Her head was throbbing, her nose was beginning to burn and there was a raspiness to her voice that she was unable to eliminate. “I cherish my work here. I believe I have proven myself and earned the privilege to manage some higher risk clients.” She paused as Reynolds jumped in to mention his own expertise and hard work. El sighed softly.

“Really what’s going on here is that Elody wishes to tarnish my name. That’s really all this is, Mr. Hemton.” Reynolds added defensively.
“Not in the slightest. I just wanted to-” El’s eyelashes fluttered as she was forced to glance away, the burning sensation in her nose rising into a tickle. “-I wanted to…” She tried to continue but could feel her defenses failing. Her breath hitched once, twice, three times before she crumpled into a harsh, “Huhitchnnxt!” The half-stifled sneeze did little but make her nose burn more intensely and her head spin.

“Bless you, Elody.” Mr. Hemton offered.

Blinking rapidly and waving a hand gently in front of her face, Elody tried to thank him. But her nose was not cooperating and she crumpled again into a pair of rough, partially stifled sneezes. “Huhnnnchew! Nxxtch!”

Mr. Hemton passed a tissue box toward the young lawyer, who gratefully accepted. Once a tissue was plucked and dabbed against her nose, Elody tried to continue. “I’m so sorry. What I’m trying to say is that I do not appreciate the way Reynolds has… recently….” her voice became breathy and her eyelashes fluttered again. The heat of embarrassment rose to her cheeks. Was she really going to have a sneezing fit in a private meeting with her nemesis and the boss she highly respected? Her breath snagged again, which seemed to be an answer in itself. “Huh...ehh...Ehhtsshh! Mmmtsh!” El pinched her nose with the tissue as fiercely as she could dare. The partially released sneezes backfired painfully into her sinuses and up into her throbbing head. The last two sneezes made her exceptionally dizzy to the point she lost her train of thought all together. Her head bobbed again as she held back two more completely silent sneezes.
“Bless you.” Jason’s deep masculine voice came again. “It is getting late. And it is a Friday. Perhaps we can continue this on Monday, hmm?”

Elody’s cheeks flushed with frustration and embarrassment. Clearly, Mr. Hemton could see how much she was struggling. It was incredibly uncharacteristic for her to be this uncomposed.

“Fine with me.” Reynolds replied. As Mr. Hemton dismissed him, the young lawyer was out the door quicker than a hare on the first day of open season. Elody, on the other hand, was struggling to compose herself.
“Yes, Monday. I should be availahhh… heh…” She scrubbed her nose roughly with the tissue, which managed to do the trick. “I should be available in the afternoon on Monday.” She breathed out, her voice congested and raspy. She held out the tissue box to return to Mr. Hemton.

“Keep it, I have a feeling you may need it more than I do right now.” There was a softness in Jason’s voice that surprised El. She had expected disgust and irritation that she had wasted some of his time and kept him in the office later than he usually was on a Friday afternoon. “Get some rest, El. By the looks of it, you could use it.” Again, his voice was gentle and considerate. It made Elody furious and grateful at the same time. She wasn’t a child. She didn’t need to be cared for. She didn’t want his pity. And she certainly did not want him to see her as a weak helpless woman. She was a lawyer. A hard working, determined, unfaltering lawyer that ran with the wolves. The look of concern across his face was more than she could bear.

“Thank you. Have a good weekend.” She replied curtly and set the box of tissues on his desk. She didn’t want any handouts.

On the way home, Elody struggled to focus through each stoplight. The pounding of her head was blurring her vision a bit and she had to force herself to concentrate. Once she was finally closing the front door behind her, Elody heaved a congested sigh. She kicked off her heels and let down her hair right there in the entry way as she heard Jayde calling her name from the other room.

“How’d the deposition go?” Jayde asked, her voice carrying over the sizzling taco meat she was cooking. The curly haired brunette glanced toward the archway just as Elody padded into the kitchen looking disheveled and exhausted.
“It went finde.” El replied. The congestion was thick in her raspy voice and the response was followed by a short dry cough.

Jayde’s eyes widened in alarm. She knew El had been run down that morning, but she hadn’t quite expected this. “Oh, baby…” she breathed out while setting down the wooden stirring spoon and making her way across the kitchen.

“Huh...Heehhh…” Elody hitched. She turned her head away and pinched her nose, catching two harsh sneezes between her thumb and forefinger. “HuhNnxt! Nnnxxt!” The pain of stifling was clear across her face. Groaning lightly, Elody pressed her fingers to her temples. “It’s nothing. I just need a...a….hih-hih-” She pulled away as Jayde now tried to wrap an arm around her, “-huhtichiew! A nap.” She sniffled. She didn’t want to be coddled, especially not by Jayde who had warned her of this very thing only a night prior.

“Oh, sure. Okay Little Miss.” Jayde replied in a sarcastic tone, her eyes rolling. “Would you care for some pain killer and decongestant with that nap of yours?” She asked. “I told you that you needed to rest! Look at you, you’re a mess!” Jayde thwarted as she turned away from El’s rejection and went to fetch the tea kettle from the cabinet.

“Really, I’m finde.” Elody replied. Her heart sank as she realized she had promised to take Jayde out dancing this evening. The very thought of it made her cringe now. The idea of loud music, high energy people, and alcohol made her head pound even harder. El shifted to seat herself at one of the stools along the high counter-top so that she could watch Jayde cook. “We can still go out if you want.” She offered thickly and followed it up with a subtle cough.
“Pft, nonsense. You’re sick as a dog. There is no way I’m letting you go out dancing tonight.”

Elody scowled, “You’re acting like a mother.” She replied indignantly.

“Well, it seems you need me to act like a mother right now! El, when are you going to just take care of yourself?” Jayde was moving quickly around the kitchen. She placed a cup of tea on the counter in front of Elody before turning back to the stove-top. “You never listen to me. So what am I supposed to do? Just let you run yourself into the ground like this?!” Her voice rose in anger and desperation. “God damn it, El! I love you!”

El could feel the heat of tears rising behind her eyes. She despised crying. It showed weakness and it was something for pathetic air-headed girls. But she could feel the tears coming nonetheless. “I don’t need you to baby me!” She snapped suddenly, her eyes blazing as she looked up to meet Jayde’s gaze.

Jayde stared at her aghast. “No? You don’t? Have you looked in the mirror today?” Jayde hissed fiercely back.
“God, just fuck off, Jay. I am not dating you to gain a mother.” She snarled and pushed the tea aside.

“Why are you even dating me then?” Jayde shot back furiously. She stood with her hands on her hips, her curly hair falling around her shoulders, and her freckled features etched into a glare. “Fuck you, El. Just… fuck you!” She screamed.

The raised voices, the pungent scent of the taco meat, the heat of anger and embarrassment all made El’s head feel as though it was going to explode. Rising from her seat, she headed down the hall toward the bedroom just as Jayde had done the night before. She did not bother to check if Jayde was following since she knew she wouldn’t. El paused once she made it into the bedroom as a rough throaty cough consumed her for a few moments. She couldn’t remember the last time she had felt this poorly. Tears trickled down her cheeks as she leaned on the bathroom counter catching her breath. Why was she like this? Why did she always push Jayde away?

Gritting her teeth, El squeezed her eyes shut. One particular memory loomed in the back of her aching head, threatening to push through her carefully constructed walls. She ran her fingers through her silvery blonde hair trying to clear away her thoughts.

El decided she’d do the only thing she could manage right now; a shower. Undressing, she climbed slowly into the steaming water and braced a hand against the slick wall. The water felt soothing as it ran over her shoulders, down her back, and off her legs. For a few moments she found relief from the congestion and the all consuming headache. For a few moments she was able to set aside the embarrassment and stress from the day and simply exist in the embrace of the warm water.

She lost track of how long she was in the shower, but she stood in there until the water began to lose its heat. Climbing out she instantly began to shiver. The towel she wrapped around herself felt useless against the oncoming chill. While she stood tiredly brushing her hair the congestion ebbed back into her sinuses and her nose began to tickle once more. This time, the tickle was persistent and confrontational. It seemed offended that she had evaded it for so long and had returned with a vengeance. She was forced to pause her mindless task and sneeze fiercely downward with her hands bracing her against the counter-top.

            “Hihitchiew! Huh-huhtschiew! Itschiew!”

Elody released a groan while she rubbed at her nose. Her limbs felt so heavy and her head was pounding so hard she thought she could just lay down and sleep right there on the bathroom floor. If it wasn’t for the intense shivering that was now racking her body, she just might have.

With a jolt, Elody stumbled backward a few steps as she hissed, “Jesus. You scared the shit out of me.”

Jayde was standing in the bathroom doorway with her arms crossed. She looked irritated by her body language but her brow tweaked together in concern. “Will you just let me help you now?” She asked. Much to El’s alarm, her voice was very soft and gentle. Lowering her arms, Jayde approached slowly as if she were trying to get near to a wounded animal. At last she lifted a hand to brush some of El’s hair away from her face, her hand lingering to then stroke along Elody’s cheek. “You’re burning up.” She breathed out. The concern deepened as El pulled away slightly to cough.

“I’ve felt better.” El replied with a sniffle. The tears swelled in her eyes again and she pressed a hand over them to shield herself. “I’m sorry.” She managed to say as she choked back the tears.

“Oh, darling, it’s okay. It’s okay.” Jayde soothed. She pulled Elody into a hug. She was smaller than El and therefore unable to become a full support for the trembling lawyer, but she did her best. “Let’s get you dressed and fed.” Jay smiled warmly as she tugged Elody to the bed and fetched some warm pajamas from the dresser.

Elody sat defeated as her partner helped to dress her. Tears still glittered in her eyes but she refused to sob. “My head is killing me.” She offered in a quiet voice once they had finished dressing and were making their way to the couch.

“I’ll warm up some soup, if you’d like. And I know I have some ibuprofen around here somewhere.”

El gratefully sunk into the couch and pulled one of the warm fuzzy couch blankets over her. Her mind was quietly chugging over the interactions of the day and the way she’d made such a fool of herself in front of her boss. The prickle in her nose began to flare up again to distract her from the negative spiral of thoughts. She hurriedly reached for a tissue from a box Jayde had placed beside her and brought the soft fabric to her flaring nostrils.

“Did everything go okay at work?” Jayde asked as she seated herself on the couch beside her partner and placed a bowl of warmed soup on the coffee table in front of them.
Scrubbing at her nose, El replied, “Not exactly. I completely messed up a… a…” Her eyelashes fluttered and her head tilted back as she geared up for the sneeze. “...a meeting… with-hih!” Elody shook her head before doubling over with a powerful, “Hihitchiew!” She rubbed at her nose. “With my boss. God, Jay, I have never been so embara-” Again she was interrupted by the twitching of her nose. She had hardly a moment for a sharp inhale before, “Hatchiew! Hih-Hiitchiew!” Moaning, El gently blew her nose. “The meeting went a lot like this. I could barely speak.” She finished with a raspy irritated cough.

Jayde began tracing her fingers through Elody’s hair. “I’m sorry, my love. I know your boss has seen your worth, though. I doubt he’d hold it against you.”

Although Elody didn’t appreciate the pitying tone of Jayde’s voice, she was too weary to argue.

“I certainly hope so.” She replied. “God…. and Reynolds was there.” Elody added in despair.

“That idiot is a waste of space. Don’t worry about him.” Jayde replied with a snort. “He’s just jealous that you’ve achieved more than him without a trust fund and without a dick.”

At this Elody couldn’t help but chuckle. It was probably true. She had put so much effort into her career in ways that most other attorneys in her firm had not. It was likely Reynolds was simply pissed off that he had not reached her level of success just yet.

“Perhaps he’s pissed that I’m into girls too.” El added with a teasing smirk.

Jayde returned the comment with a chuckle and pulled her partner in for a kiss. It was one of those kisses that promised something more. Their lips locked as the anger and frustration from the fight earlier seemed to melt away. Elody pulled back suddenly and reared to her right with her nose twitching furiously.

“Hatshiew! Ugh, I’m sorry.” She sniffled, “You probably shouldn’t be kissing me right now anyway.”

“I don’t care if you get me sick. I just want to be with you, El.”

Offering a small smile, El leaned into Jayde’s embrace and cuddle deeper under her blanket. It was rare she could relax, especially with another person, but tonight she was too tired to hold her defenses up. Before long she was gently being woken and guided to the bed for the evening. Elody didn’t argue as she was fed some cold medication and nudged into bed. The soft mattress and warm blankets welcomed her with open arms. As she began to drift off again the last thing she remembered was saying, “I love you” in a quiet voice.

“I love you too.” Jayde whispered back.
