Daydream of the Future

Just a little snippet of a daydream, and a hope for a post-pandemic future. Sorry/not sorry for the political reference! Hey, it's my daydream.....

It was a beautiful, sunny April day in 2021, and Tomás was strolling home through the beautiful and bustling campus. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, Joe Biden was in the White House, the pandemic was over, and all was right with the world.

Oh, the normal things he would never again take for granted - teaching in person. Hugging his friends, seeing his grandmother. Going to a concert.

"Atchhoooo!" he sneezed.

And enjoying coming down with a cold. 

Of all terrible effects of the pandemic, Tomás thought as he lightly blew his nose, he could hardly complain about the effect on his sexuality. But there it was. He was a sneeze fetishist, and he liked colds and contagion best of all. Then all of a sudden what had been a source of innocent pleasure was mixed up with a terrible thing that was happening to the world. He tried to keep them separate in his mind, but it was hard. When he had thought that he was getting sick in the fall (it was just allergies and an athsma flare-up) - it was not fun at all. The second wave was raging at the time, and it was really scary. 

But how quickly things had turned around. The long-awaited vaccine was approved in December and an effective drug cocktail came soon after. After an initial botched roll-out, vaccine production quickly ramped up, and a massive vaccination campaign ensued. Tomás was able to get vaccinated in early March. In-person classes began again April 12.

And now, two weeks later, he was coming down with his first post-COVID cold. Just an innocent, sniffly, sneezy cold that wasn't going to put anyone in ICU. 

"Etchoooo!" he sneezed again, feeling a flush of pleasure. The "teach remotely if you are even slightly ill" guidance was still in effect, so as soon as he realized he was getting sick, he'd packed up his things and headed home. Home to Sofia, his beautiful, sexy, incredibly tolerant and understanding girlfriend, who would let him kiss her and play with the idea of giving her his cold. She didn't mind. "I'm either going to get it or I'm not," she'd said with a casual shrug and a smile the very first time he'd gotten a cold in their relationship. She was so perfect for him. He let himself imagine her catching his cold, with her cute little hitching sneezes. "You gabe be a code," she'd pout, having fun driving him crazy. "Hih-hitchooo!"

Tomás felt a surge of desire and happiness. Everything was right with the world again, and he had so much to look forward to.
