Comfortandstuff
Hello, beauties! I decided to write this little thing tonight, in honor of the newest Critical Role episode. Except, if it were to have gone my way. LOL. Just a heads up, this is kind of spoilers for anything recent in the campaign (kind of?) so enter with caution. Thinking of continuing this, with some Jester and Caleb action. Let me know what you think. The Breezy Night Air of Nicodranas “Jester?” Jester was shaken from her general malaise and space-out by the voice of The Traveller. Apparently, Artie had been sitting there for quite a while and she hadn’t even noticed. Maybe it was the view- she hadn’t been home in so long, and singing the winding trees and beautiful beaches of Nicodronaus called for a complete mental checkout. A gentle, chilly breeze wafted across the balcony where she stood and brought her back to reality. “Oh, I’m sorry! I didn’t know you were going to come.” Jester began to reassure her friend- or her God, depending on the day- with boisterous laughter and a bright smile, slyly wiping at her sore eyes. “Oh, no worries, no worries- I technically didn’t even tell you I was going to pay you a visit, but something up here told me to check on you.” He tapped at his head, smirking and placing a hand on his cheek. “Well, that is very nice of you.. It’s been a while since we’ve talked, you know?” Jester smiled attentively, with a gentle sniffle and an adjusting of her neck. “Yes, we’re both very busy. But, duty calls!” “It does, it really does.” Jester sighed with exasperation, and wrapped her arms around her torso. “Mmm….. Are you feeling alright, dear?” Artagan asked gently, staring at her with furrowed, long orange brow, ignoring her attempts “Feeling alright?” She asked, straightening up. “You seem a bit out of sorts.” He purred casually, his concern bleeding through his nonchalant demeanor. “Oh, I think I am just tired, you know? It has been a very long couple of weeks.” Doing her best to reassure the fey, she gestured frantically, and did her best to be chipper. It was more difficult than usual, lately. “As you say..” Artagan decided not to pry, crossing his arms and paying her a sideways glance. Jester giggled, and met his eyes. “I’ve really missed you.. I’ve missed home. Mama, too.” Artagan listened intently, facial features relaxing as he listened to her speak. “I, uh… I’m- very scared, Artie. I’m scared that I’m never going to see you again. That I’m never going to see mama again.” Jester’s eyes quickly crowded with water. She made no eye contact, and stared directly at the water of the ocean- focusing on the lights reflecting from the city. “I know.” He replied simply, genuine empathy seeping through his facade. “I’m scared, too.” Jester nodded, and held back a sob by biting the inside of her cheek and breathing through her nose. “I’ll really miss you.” Jester murmured quietly, her voice breaking as she wiped her eyes, Artagan couldn’t stand leaving her like that any longer- scooping her up into a tight embrace, and running his hands through her hair he began to comfort her. “This isn’t goodbye, Jester. I’m going to give everything I possibly can to protect you, I promise.” Artagan whispered to her in between gentle hushes and sighs, before suddenly pulling back. “What is it?” Jester asked, wiping her nose on her sleeve. “You’re very warm.” Artagan said, clearly concerned. “I’m always warm, Artie. I’m a tiefling.” Jester laughed waterily, sweeping the last tears from her cheeks. “No, I- I know that. I mean, you’re abnormally warm..” Artagan clarified, pressing the back of his hand to her forehead. “I knew it. You’re ill.” He met her eyes, with sympathy. “Oh, no.. I’m just tired, that’s all. I promise.” Jester took his hand and squeezed it with thanks. Her nose began to tickle, as if to immediately betray her, and she slowly turned to the side raising her arm that wasn’t clutching Artagan to her nose. “Hit-chiew!” She sneezed lightly in her elbow, as subtly as she could. “Oh dear..” Artagan tsked, still clutching her hand in his. Unfortunately, Jester’s stifle could not expel the itch and she bent once more, sneezing more freely. “Hap-tchieww!” She groaned lightly, and pressed a hand to her head. “Ok, maybe you are right.” “Bless you, Jester.” Artagan purred delicately, pressing a soft handkerchief into her hand, and running his fingers through his wind-tossed, orange hair. “Please, do your best to rest for me. I know that is not easy right now, but as soon as you get the chance. I simply cannot take seeing you like this.” “I know.. I’m sorry.” “Don’t be sorry. I just… you know I love you. It kills me to see you in such distress.” “I promise you, I will find time to rest. I’m really glad you came to see me. You already helped me feel better.” Jester smiled, resting her head on his shoulder. Running his fingers through her hair once again, he smiled and rested his chin atop her head. “Good.” “Now, please- take care of that cold,” He said with a final gentle kiss to the forehead, his cool lips feeling lovely against her forehead. “I’ll see you soon.” He uttered pointedly, before fading away. Jester sighed, dabbing at her eyes with Artagan’s silk handkerchief, and clutching it to her heart as she turned back to face the night sky’s reflection in the warm ocean water beneath. “See you soon.” That's all for now. Let me know if you want more. Also, if you wanna talk about critical role- I'm always game. All the best- A Link to comment
