Cold-stuffed noses run and tickle, tucked firmly into soft tissues. The rims of red nostrils are inflamed, heat radiating off even though there’s no fever as wet, thick sniffles hang in the air. The sniffles alternate with messy sneezes and juicy, splattering blows into the tissues that quickly soak through them and render them useless. The tissues ball up, rubbing once more at the underside of those red nostrils and cleaning up the fluid gathered beneath before being tossed away.

More tissues are pulled from the box, a never-ending cycle. Hitch, sniff, wipe, rub, hitch-hitch-hitch-sneeze!! Ugh…….blow, rub, sniff. More tissues. God, it tickles. A constant stream of mess leaks from red noses, sniffled back into battered nostrils over and over until they’re too full and they begin to overflow. Then those noses are blown again, but sometimes a particularly stubborn nose will refuse to blow and just rub instead. The soft tissues wipe at the underside of crimson nostrils over and over, trying to soak up that mess even though it would feel so much better just to blow…...oh god, the tickle is coming back. Not another sneeze, please, there have already been so maaaaah...many…...haahhh, ahhh, hah! HIH!!!

Another overflowing sniffle, the mess coming even more profusely as that poor nose tries to rid itself of the agonizing, cold-induced tickle. Weary eyes slide shut, tears gathered at the corners as damp tissues pinch around the leaking nose, desperate to soothe the tickle. More hitching, tissues pinching tighter and pressing desperately against the rims of those crimson nostrils. Hih—ih—ih, ih, ih!! HAAAAHH—! Not another sneeze, not another sneeze, p-pleeEEEHHHHT’SCHIUUUUUUHH!! AAAAAHHHH’ISXHIEWWW!! HUUUUHHHH—!! Ugh….fuck…..sniff, sniff, blow (finally), wipe-pinch-rub….tissues thrown away…...maybe now the tickle has abated and more sneezes won’t come. Hopefully.

The tickly nose continues to leak helplessly, and more tissues are tucked around it. The box is almost empty.

Sniff…….

This is so well-written!

I love the line "but sometimes a particularly stubborn nose will refuse to blow" - maybe that's the owner of the nose who's stubborn, maybe they're not a good nose-blower, or perhaps they try and nothing comes out leaving them snuffling frustratedly into those tissues.

You do capture that feeling of the recurrent nasal itch from a bad cold so well, well done!
