A Nasty Cold

Chris had just gotten home from work. Despite the fact that it was 60ﾟ out he felt decidedly chilled and had worn a hoodie all day in the office. Chris thought it was because of the AC but his walk home in the sunshine did nothing to alleviate how cold he felt. So, he decided to go take a hot shower with the hope of warming up. His boyfriend would be home soon and they could snuggle under a pile of blankets if the steaming water didn't work.

Chris also noted that in addition to feeling chilled, his congestion that he attributed to his allergies, had gotten much worse as the day progressed. He decided to ignore this fact as he turned the water on until the bathroom filled with steam. After letting out a few messy sneezes and soaking up the warmth of the shower, Chris turned the water off. He immediately regretted it as the cold air hit him. He got out of the tub quickly, realizing the chills had not subsided. Chris wrapped his towel around his shivering body and went to his room to find some warm clothes to put on. Chris put on his thermal underwear, onesie pajamas, and fleece robe. He decided to crawl into bed as a wave of exhaustion added to his misery. As he buried himself under the blankets, Chris fell asleep in the warmth. When he woke up several hours later, it was no secret that he had caught a terrible cold.

Chris felt absolutely awful. His congestion from earlier had settled into his chest giving him the urge to cough. Before he had a chance to try to cough off the thick mucus he let out a very wet triple, spraying snot onto his blankets. He reached over for a tissue to clean up. Just as he was about to lay back down his boyfriend Trevor walked into the bedroom.

Trevor had a tray with steaming soup, a glass of orange juice, vapor rub, and a thermometer. Chris tried to hide under the blankets because Trevor had the worst immune system and he did not want him to end up sick in bed as well.

Despite Chris's feeble efforts, Trevor pulled back the covers and put his hand on Chris's forehead. "You have a 🤒 fever and you sound awfully congested!" Chris did not disagree with Trevor's assessment and instead he opened his mouth for the thermometer. While Trevor was waiting for Chris's temperature 🌡, he unzipped Chris's fleece onesie and unbuttoned his union suit so he could lather vapo rub on his chest. The thermometer 🌡 beeped with a reading of 102.8. Trevor shook his head and placed a cold 🥶 cloth on his boyfriend's forehead. He then rubbed in the vapo rub and covered up Chris with his blankets. For the next half hour he fed Chris warm broth one spoonful at a time.

Part 3

Trevor looked at his boyfriend lying in bed underneath a mound of blankets. He looked so helpless, his cheeks were flushed but his complexion was pale. He asked Chris if he needed anything. "Mot night mow..." came the muffled and congested reply. Trevor freshened the cool cloth, gave him a sip of water, and a cherry 🍒 cough drop.

"I'll be right back" Trevor said as he left the room with the tray of dishes. Once he was downstairs he decided to change out of his work clothes. He found his flannel pjs folded on the couch along with his favorite fleece robe. After Trevor was more comfortable, he went back into the kitchen to have the rest of the soup. He poured himself a steaming bowl and sat down at the table. Trevor's mind was racing about how he could help Chris so he didn't notice that he picked up the same spoon he had just used to feed his boyfriend. As he finished the last bite he realized his mistake. 

Trevor accepted his fate that within a day or so he would be in bed too feeling just as miserable or worse than Chris. With this reality in mind he put the dishes in the sink, turned off the lights, and poured Chris some Nyquil. He made his way to Chris's room to spend the night trying to nurse him back to health before they traded places later in the week.

Chris chugged his Nyquil and then smiled when he saw Trevor in his pajamas. "Can you cuddle with me?" Chris asked shyly. "I am freezing 🥶  still!". Once again, Trevor placed the thermometer in Chris's mouth and got the heated blanket out for them both. Just as Trevor was turning the power 🔋 on to high, the thermometer 🌡 beeped. 103.4 read the digital display. Trevor felt bad for Chris but was also worried for what was to come. He decided to ignore reality for now and settled in next to his boyfriend. They both fell asleep 😴 under the warmth radiating from the blanket and Chris.

Both boys slept through the night and Chris was the first to wake up around 11am. He was covered in sweat and immediately sneezed an uncovered double 🤧 in the direction of Trevor. Chris carefully slid out from under the heated blanket, took off his robe and unzipped his footed pajamas. He immediately laid back down because the last 15 hours of sleep did nothing to relieve his exhaustion. 

A few moments later Trevor woke up. He was surprised to see how late in the morning it was. He felt a bit groggy and chilly but ignored both and got out of bed. Trevor went into the bathroom to get the thermometer 🌡 for Chris. He was alarmed by his reflection in the vanity mirror. Again he ignored it because there was no way he would get sick so quickly. Before heading back to Chris, Trevor decided to get dressed. Despite the fact that it was a 65 degree day, he opted for some warmer layers. He chose his favorite long johns, sweat pants, sweatshirt, fleece pullover, and a ski hat.

He found Chris trying to drift off to sleep so he quickly stuck the thermometer into his mouth. After a few moments the beeping noise filled the room, 102.7. Still not good. 

Trevor went to make breakfast and told Chris that a shower would ease his congestion and make him feel better after sweating all night.

As Trevor made his way downstairs he let out a loud sneeze which he didn't bother to cover. He made his way into the kitchen. Nothing appealed to Trevor even though he only had soup last night for dinner. Noticing how tired 🥱 he felt and that he was shivering in spite of how warmly he dressed he quickly went back upstairs. He decided to stick the thermometer 🌡 in his mouth to confirm his suspicion. A minute later a reading of 100.3 confirmed he was already sick 😷 too. "Oh great he thought", out loud. 

"Cab you ring me some clothes?", Chris shouted from the bathroom. Trevor got him some fresh long johns, a warm pair of pajamas, and a robe. He left everything outside the door for his boyfriend. "I'll meet you back in bed Chris. I feel awful.", Trevor muttered as he made his way back to the bedroom. 

Trevor decided to trade his sweats for a union suit and footed pajamas. Feeling exhausted he just grabbed Chris's from last night and put them on. He was already sick so a few more germs wouldn't hurt. 

With his last bit of energy Trevor straightened the blankets and put the heated blanket on high. Chris came in just as Trevor was getting under the covers.

"That didn't take long", Chris said in between chesty coughs. Trevor nodded and sneezed desperately 🤧 into a pile of kleenex. As soon as he stopped blowing his nose, Trevor said, "I think we have the flu!". Chris looked at his boyfriend knowingly. "What are we going to do?".

Trevor replied, "For starters, we are going back to sleep 💤. I am exhausted and freezing 🥶." 

Chris went over to Trevor's side of the bed and put a few more blankets on him before tucking himself under the mound of warmth as well. The boys both knew they would get much worse before they got better. Their flus always became bronchitis and pneumonia. The trouble was who would care for them in this state?

Trevor went to the bathroom sneezing uncontrollably. He was only on day 2 of being sick with about 15 more to go. He took his temperature 🌡 😳. It was 104.4. Trevor called Chris's ex boyfriend, Connor to come over after work to check on them. Connor was a doctor and would help nurse them back to health. When Trevor returned to the bedroom, he found Chris sweating profusely in a pile of blankets. Trevor carefully pulled back the blankets and got Chris out of his many layers until he was down to the long johns. Trevor did the same and went back to the bathroom to draw a tepid bath.

Chris and Trevor climbed into the tub in an effort to lower their temperature. After about a half hour, the doorbell rang.

Connor made his way into the house looking for the patients. He followed the hacks, barks, and congestion to the bathroom. Connor opened the door to find two flu filled individuals in need of care.

Connor brought Chris and Trevor back to their bedroom so that he could diagnosis them. Connor began with Connor. He took his temperature, checked his throat, and sinuses. After a few moments he administered a flu test, strep test, and checked Chris's lungs for fluid. 

While he was waiting on Connor's results, he moved onto Trevor. Trevor's temperature at 103 gave him pause.

Connor helped both boys get into their pajamas and robe and tucked them into bed 🛌 so he could go read their results.
