Haunted Houses on Halloween (Castevania modern au - Trevor)

“Trevor hurry and move your feet. Come on, this will be fun!” Sypha chirped as she dragged the bigger man through the streets, making the him groan even as he headed her words. Said streets were filled with laughter and screaming children in costume, looking to get as much candy they could get their grubby little hands on. Halloween - every child’s second favorite holiday. The houses, more like mansions, in this neighborhood were lavish and Trevor would bet the kids were getting good hauls as they scrambled from house to house. As the two made their way further down the road, the people littering the streets started to thin. The trees around them started to get thicker and the fading path wound in tighter curves; the perfect place for someone to never be found again.

“Sypha, if I didn’t know any better I’d think you were taking me out here to kill me and stash my body in the woods.” His gruff words made Sypha laugh gleefully up at the trees, and Trevor couldn’t help but smile at the sound of it. God he really was weak for this woman. His smile quickly slipped off his face as they approached their destination, however. They came to stop at a hulking structure of a mansion looming above the tree-line. It’s shape was odd, seemingly a mash of different build styles as rooms had been added over the years, and it looked like it shouldn’t be physically possible to stay standing the way it was. The overgrown vines and greenery at the base of the mansion have had time to basically claim the structure as a part of the earth itself though, so who knows how long it’s been out here. The place didn’t look abandoned with the front door kept clear of growth, though he wouldn’t say it looked particularly occupied either. No lights shown from any window.

“It seems I actually don’t know any better, you’re definitely going to kill me now.”

“Oh come off it Trevor, this is exciting!! Exploring an abandoned mansion in the woods on Halloween; what could be more romantic?” Trevor rolled his eyes, trying to fight the smile tugging at his lips.

“Killing me in the woods would make a great tragic love story.”

“Oh my god; what are you, scared? Aren’t the Belmont’s monster hunters?”

“Yes, but we haven’t had much work these days you know- Sypha hold on!” Sypha didn’t wait for his quip as she sauntered right up to the front door and started inspecting the lock. He joined her just as she tried the knob, opening the door with surprisingly no resistance. They shared a look before carefully stepping through the door. Inside was still and dark, the edge of a blood red floor runner visible from the meager moonlight creeping in from the doorway. They stepped in further, closing the door and letting darkness consume them before Sypha summoned a small flame between her fingers. Speaker magic, a rare gift in the modern age and always a sight to behold.

“Wow, it’s beautiful.” Sypha whispered, her voice carrying through the tall, empty room. With the fire Trevor could now make out a grand entrance hall leading back to a fancy staircase, the tall windows were blocked out with thick red curtains and from the tall ceiling hung a lavish gold and crystal chandelier. No graffiti lined the walls and all the finery seemed to be in tack… odd.

“Sypha, are you sure this place is abandoned?” Trevor asked quietly, positioning himself closer to her as his eyes swept the balconies overlooking from the second floor. How many rooms could possible be in a house this big? Does this even count as a house?

“Oh definitely, I don’t know anyone who could live in all this dust.” She says as she pulls one of the curtains away from the window, dust pouring out of it as if it hadn’t been disturbed in ages. Trevor stepped away quickly to avoid the fall out, but even so felt his nose tingle in irritation. Fuck.

“This is ridiculous, I’ve never seen this much dust before. How long has this place been abandoned for it to pile up like this?” Sypha snarked, an eyebrow raised as she inspected the old silk. Trevor’s breath hitched as she talked, wavering even as his fingers pressed up under his nostrils. Just the reminder of how much dust they were surrounded in was enough to make his eyes flutter.

“S-Sypha…stop t-tahhlking haah-!

“What?” Just as she turned he felt his control slip as a final breath was finally yanked into his lungs.

“hAT’CHhhuu!! AT’Chooh! Haah- hAH! AG’TChhhhu!! Oh fuck- snf!” Trevor’s sneezes ripped out of him, the noise booming around the silent room. Both of them winced at the echo, staying still for a moment until the silence returned. They stood tense, listening for anything moving. After a few moments of nothing, Sypha smacked Trevor in the arm and glared.

“Jeeze Trevor, must you always be such a brute? You know you don’t have to go all out on everything right?” She asked in a sharp tone, still keeping her voice quiet even after the silence had already been broken. He rolled his eyes and crossed his arms at her, scoffing.

“It’s not my fault dust makes me sneeze, with you throwing it around like confetti.”

“I did no such-”

“Is it customary to enter someone’s home uninvited?” A third voice startled them as the two whip around towards the noise, spotting a young man at the top of the stairs holding a candle. He was tall, built elegantly with long flowing golden hair. He looked unamused, though oddly not mad or frightened at the fact that two people had apparently just broken into his home.

“Oh my god, I’m so sorry!!” Sypha apologized stepping out of her fighting stance. “We thought this place was abandoned; there were no lights and the door was unlocked.” she reasoned. The man hummed in understanding, reaching over and flicking a switch in the archway he’s standing under. Suddenly the room is filled with light as the chandelier comes to life, causing the two to shield their eyes with the suddenness of it. It does nothing to help Trevor’s still irritated nose.

hih- ahG’TChuu!!” He aims a sudden sneeze towards the floor, only remembering to cover when Sypha elbows him. A moment of awkward silence follows.

“Bless you.” Their host offers finally, and in the direct light Trevor gets a better look at the man. Not only is his hair a beautiful pale gold, but so are his eyes. His sharp teeth glint in the light as he talks. The sight makes Trevor tense.

“Vampire” he spits, feeling his expression pull into a sneer. His family may not do much hunting anymore, but he knows a monster when he sees one. Fuck, if only he had brought his whip. Sypha gives him an astonished look, while the thing merely raises an eyebrow.

“Vampire, now what makes you say that?” He asks, almost taunting. Playing with it’s food, the fucker.

“I can see your teeth from here, monster.”

“Why, don’t you know it’s Halloween? Who says I’m not just dressed up for the occasion?” The thing doesn’t raise his voice, though the haughty undertone is enough to make Trevor’s fingers twitch. He may not have his blessed whip, but he does have a knife if it comes down to it.

“I’ll know the difference when I rip them from your jaw-”

“Belmont!” Sypha’s scolding voice cuts him off, and he watches the vampire’s expression open in recognition of the name. He laughs quietly, and that makes them both pause.

“A Belmont, well that explains some things. Though you’re not quiet right, sir Hunter. I am a Dhampir, born of a human mother and vampiric father. And I live alone, secluded in the woods and not a threat to anyone. So tell me, have you come here to hunt me?”

“No!” Sypha interjects before Trevor can open his mouth, glaring harshly when he opens his mouth to argue. “It really was an honest mistake, we are sorry for disturbing you. We will be going now.” This time Trevor does speak up glaring right back at her.

“I am not leaving knowing that there is a threat just down the road from a bustling neiborhaah-! AT’CHhuuh!!” Another surprise sneeze throws him forward, cutting his speech short. There’s another awkward pause, and when Trevor meets the eyes of the dhampir he seems to be contemplating something.

“Why don’t I make us some tea then. You can ask all the questions you want, and if after you still consider me a threat you can hunt me all you like. Though, I hardly think you’ll be much of an opponent in your...current condition.” Trevor stares blatantly at the suggestion, sit for tea? Is he serious? Sypha looks to him questioningly, and he can only shrug. After a moment she shrugs back and turns to their host.

“That would actually be much appreciated, sir…?”

“My name is Adrian. And you are?”

“Sypha and Trevor, nice to meet you.” Trevor crosses his arms and huffs, glaring when it makes Adrian chuckle.

“The pleasure is all mine.” He answers politely, turning towards the archway behind him. “Now please follow me into the kitchen, it’s much more welcoming than this dusty place.”

hIH- AGT’choo!! snf!” Trevor catches the whirl of golden hair as Adrian turns back to face them, teeth on full display in an infuriatingly amused smirk.

“Bless you, Belmont.”

I have surprised myself by becoming quite a big fan of the Netflix series - it's good to know there are more of us out there :biggrinsmiley: I greatly enjoyed reading this story and would love to read more of your work with these characters. I wrote a Castlevania fic about three years ago, but with Sypha doing the sneezing

Trevor is just as much of a jerk in a modern AU as he is in the actual series, and I love it. You wrote him so in-character! And his sneezes are delicious, of course.
