The IT department. Most people called it the dungeon, but you don't mind it. The windowless basement room suited the job, and the tendency to be on call or on strange hours didn't bother you either. You didn't have as strict a uniform as the rest of the company either, and the pay was great for the relative ease of the job. It was just you and three other people, normally with just two people on shift at a time.

 

You had just finished logging in when Naomi came in.

 

Naomi was beautiful. 6 feet tall, with shoulder length hair that was a different color every week that somehow was only slightly fried and always complemented her deep brown eyes. Today her hair was orange, she was wearing a big sweatshirt and long, thick skirt. You'd seen her wear that skirt before,the first week after you had decided to both come out as trans at the office together by storming the merchandising department for new name tags, but the sweatshirt was so old and ratty you were surprised for a moment, until you noticed how flushed her face was, cute hawkish nose rubbed raw around her twitching nostrils. You didn't think your crush on her could get any bigger.

 

She snuffled as she flopped down into her chair. It rolled pitifully over to you and she looked up at you with fever bright eyes in the gloom. "Terry," She sniffled wetly, "sxnxgh- Avenge me, I'm dying and Darla made me come in."

 

"Poor baby," you coo, looking away so she can't see how heavily you're blushing. You focus very intently on logging into the computer. "I can't do that, but I'll get you lunch and cover your work?"

 

She's too busy sneezing wetly into her elbow to answer. It's the kind you can hear scraping against her throat, and you can tell from her sudden grimace and frantic grabbing for the tissue box it was productive. "You're an angel," she says eventually, after blowing her nose thoroughly, "I'd hug you if I wabsn't so gross."

 

You're saved from stammering out a reply by the object of Naomi's misery bursting in. Darla is Naomi's opposite in many ways, short, thin, and severe. "Good, you're both on time." Naomi coughs a little. "You can stop faking, I don't know what kind of little goth parties you go to on the weekend but being hungover is no excuse to miss work on such an important day."

 

"I know it's a Monday, but we don't have very many tasks lined up?" You start, "it was only that issue with the printers on three, and from looking at the emails that was fixed, everything else is just forgotten password requests."

 

"Oh," Darla says. "Well. Faking sick to skip what could be a busy day is wrong to do anyway. I expect you both to be keeping up today." She turns on her patent leather heels, slamming the door behind her.

 

"What a bitch," you start, turning to Naomi, who's building up into another sneeze. She could be on a cold medicine advertisement, the blue light from the screens making the red of her nose and bags under her eyes more intense. You're transfixed, handing her some tissues out of the box on autopilot as she hitches. "hh-hhh-HXTCHieew!" She groans, raising the clump of tissues you placed into her hands to her face just in time. Your heart is pounding. Still on autopilot, you turn to the computer and start typing away.

 

"Danks," she mutters, leaning her head onto her desk. "Snrrff! Ugh, I dunno why she hates me so mduch, I know it's not the trans thing because she's fine with you, Melanie, and Sock and Sock uses neopronouns and I've never heard her get those wrong."

 

"Fae's kind of a suck up," you say, heart still pounding in your ears. You can't meet her eyes.

 

"I'mb sorry, you must be such a germaphobe too, withd the way you're acting."

 

You freeze, but your mouth moves before you can catch it. "Kind of the opposite, actually." She makes a noise of inquiry. "I'll uh. Shit I didn't mean to say that I can explain later I guess?" You're talking very very fast.

 

She nods, smiling slyly a little, and slides over to her desk.

 

The hours till lunch pass like molasses. Naomi stifles into her elbow or tissues more and more often as time stretches on, occasionally catching you flinch away from looking at her. You switch between computers often, so tickets are being filled out in her name, and she dozes when she can.
