Max’s Sick Timeline

So this is my first time posting a story on here (I’ve been lurking for about a year though) so please don’t judge this too harshly! I’m posting this pretty late so I can’t psych myself out of doing it and there’ll probably be more parts.

Day 1

Max was sitting on his couch, blowing his nose into a tissue, and counting down the minutes until his boyfriend Rodrigo got home. Max had all the signifiers that he was going to get sick the previous day; headache, sore throat, and a runny nose, but that was nothing he couldn’t he couldn’t write off in his mind pretty easily. Now though, he was just flat out sick and it would be difficult to hide it from anyone, let alone his boyfriend. He couldn’t go a solid 5 minutes without needing to blow his nose or sneeze or cough despite the large cocktail of medicines he’d taken an hour earlier. His nose was red and chapped and he felt the beginnings of a fever creeping onto his skin. He had no idea what to do and Rodrigo was going to get home any second. If Rodrigo found out he was sick, he’d make him stay home at least for a day or two. And though that was probably best for his health and what he’d prefer to do, he couldn’t afford to miss any classes, especially not over some cold. Max was consumed his thoughts before he was shocked out of them by the front door opening. He quickly pocketed the now soaked tissue he was using and got off the couch.

“Honey I’m-! oh hey.”

“Hey baby” Max could hear the nasally tone in his voice and hoped Rodrigo couldn’t.

Rodrigo pulled him in for kiss, and though Max didn’t want to spread his germs to him, he thought it would look suspicious if he pulled away, so he leaned into it. While Rodrigo was taking his shoes off and putting down his bag, Max took the opportunity to discreetly wipe his nose on his sleeve. Damn nose is running again and I blew it not even a minute ago, how am I supposed to keep this up for multiple hours he thought to himself frustratedly. After Rodrigo had changed into some sweats, the two of them curled up on the couch together to watch a movie. Rodrigo worked at an upscale restaurant, so he usually got home pretty late and this was the rare time they got to spend together most days. The movie was more background noise as the talked about their days. Max let Rodrigo lead most of the conversation and only spoke occasionally. Rodrigo didn’t seem to notice how little he was talking or Max constantly wiping his nose because he so consumed in telling his story from that day. Max also had to stifle quite a few coughs and it made his throat hurt even more than before.

“Babe, are you okay, you seem kinda off?” Rodrigo asked, his eyes brimming with concern.

“Yeah I’m totally fine” Max answered trying to assure him.

So much for him not noticing. He really didn’t need Rodrigo paying attention to him every time he coughed or sneezed. There was only so much he could reasonably explain away.

Max decided by the time the movie was ending that he was going to bed early, both in an attempt to get away from Rodrigo and also because he was extremely tired. Thank god he had done all his homework that was going to be due tomorrow the previous day“just in case”.

“Babe, I’m gonna go to bed early.”

Rodrigo was very confused by Max saying this. He was normally a night owl and didn’t go to sleep until well after midnight, and it was nowhere near that late. Rodrigo had, had the feeling that Max was getting sick since he got home and this certainly wasn’t helping.

“Is everything okay? You never go to sleep this early.”

“Yeah, I’m fine, I’m just kinda tired for some reason.”

Rodrigo nodded in response and Max walked away to their bedroom. Once he got in there he exploded into some tissues from the box on his nightstand.

“HHAATTCCHEEW! TTSSHUU!”

Max moaned in pain from the sudden movement of his head and prayed Rodrigo couldn’t hear him over the sound of the tv. He crawled into bed and reluctantly set his alarm for the next morning.

I’m posting this hella late again for reasons, but here’s the next part! I’m thinking I’ll do around 6, but I’m not sure.

Day 2

Max woke up to the agonizing sound of his alarm ringing and quickly turned it off. Normally it took him hitting the snooze button a few times to actually get out of bed, but now he couldn’t even think of doing so. All of the symptoms he’d had yesterday felt like they had multiplied by 10 fold in intensity, how did he manage to get this sick this fast? He badly wanted to go back to sleep, but he knew if he didn’t get up now then he never would. So he sat up and walked over to bathroom to take a shower. He took a look in the mirror and to put it shortly, he looked horrible. His eyes had dark circles under them, his cheeks were flushed red, and the rest of his face was sickly pale. Hopefully the shower would fix at least some of that and if it didn’t… he’d figure it out.

News flash, the shower didn’t help with anything. He looked just as bad and it only gave him temporary relief from his symptoms. Max decided he would take some medicine, get to class, and suppress his symptoms best he could. He opened the bathroom cabinet and dry swallowed 2 Tylenol’s (not a good idea because it triggered a harsh coughing fit). He stepped out of the bathroom, though he was confused not seeing Rodrigo in bed. He didn’t have work for another few hours, and if he was going somewhere why didn’t he say anything?Max quickly got dressed and stepped out of their bedroom to see if he was still home. He saw Rodrigo sitting on the couch watching tv. His eyes shot up from the screen as soon as he saw Max enter the living room. He looked Max fully up and down and smirked.

“You look… interesting.”

“Whatd’s that supposed to mbean?” Max asked clearly agitated.

He could hear how congested he sounded and muttered a curse under his breath at having not thought to take a decongestant.

“Well you just look particularly… how should I say, disheveled.”

Rodrigo wasn’t wrong about that, but just Max wished he would shut up and and stop being so passive aggressive about it.

“Well I have to getd to class, I’ll see you later tondight.”

“Okay, see you.”

Max kissed his boyfriend on the cheek and stepped out the front door.

“HHTTSHUU!” he sneezed suddenly as he was shutting the door.

“Bless you!” Rodrigo called out to him smugly.

Max wiped his runny nose on his sleeve and rolled his eyes.

This is gonna be a hell of a day he thought to himself, as he walked towards his apartment elevator.

Max had 3 classes to attend that day and by the time he’d finished his 1st one he was debating going home. He hadn’t even been paying attention to what the professor was saying, he spent the whole class trying to keep his sneezing and coughing to minimum. Every time he did, it felt like everyone collectively turned around and stared to shame him into silence. It wasn’t as if he could stop himself from being sick and they were acting like he was doing it all on purpose. He really didn’t feel well and the idea of going to sleep in his bed sounded amazing. As for his grades, he didn’t retain any of the information from his previous class and he was sure he wouldn’t be able to for his next 2. It was pretty much like he had missed it and he figured actually missing it was better than staying and suffering. He coughed a few times into a used tissue he pulled from his pocket, and he decided it was his final straw. He started his walk towards the school exit and kept himself upright with the thought of returning to his warm bed.

By the time Max got home, he could barely think straight. He started feeling woozy on the drive home and he was positive he’d went past the speed limit multiple times. By the time he got home all he could do was drop his things on the ground and collapse onto the couch.

Rodrigo opened the front door and wasn’t at all surprised seeing Max fast asleep on the couch. He’d convinced his boss to let him leave work a few hours early because he’d been so concerned. He had only been acting smug earlier because he knew Max wouldn’t last long. He guessed Max had skipped at least 1 of his classes, left early, and crashed. He gently shook his shoulder to wake Max up so he could take him to their room. He immediately sat up after he opened his eyes.

“Wha-wha whend did you getd get hobe?!”

“Just now.”

“Whatd? How is thatd… what timbe is it?!”

“About 5:30, I got my boss to let me leave work a few hours early.”

“Oh…”

“When did you get home baby?”

Rodrigo laid the back of his hand against Max’s forehead and clicked his tongue in disappointment. He felt a little warm to the touch last night, but now he had at least a moderate fever.

“Umb… a liddle over an hour ago.”

“Let me take you to bed so you can go back to sleep.”

“M’fide *cough* I’m notd thatd tired andymore.”

“But you’re sick.”

“Ndo I’m ndot!”

“Then why’s your voice sound all kinds of fucked up and why do you have a fever?”

“Well…”

“C’mon, are you really telling me you wouldn’t rather sleep in our room?”

Max stayed silent for a moment. He didn’t see any point in continuing to lie when he was it was very clear he wasn’t going to win this argument. He didn’t even care about what missing a few days of class would do to his grades he felt so awful. He leaned his head against Rodrigo’s chest and weakly nodded. Rodrigo pulled him off the couch and lead his shaky boyfriend to their room. He tucked Max in bed and he fell asleep before he could even take his temperature. He went back to the living room, turned on the tv, and waited for Max to wake up.

So I know it’s been a little while since I’ve updated this and that’s cause I have no idea what to write next 💀. I’ve written part 3 like twice already and I hated them both so if anyone has any suggestions on what I should write next it would be greatly appreciated 🙏.

I don’t know how I missed this, but I’m glad I found it. It’s so cute!

as for a suggestion, maybe amp up the progression of Max’s cold (not too much), and more caretaking between the two?

Next part is finally here and I’m posting this at a decent time! This ones a little longer than the previous 2.

Day 3

Max didn’t end up waking up until early the next morning. It was so early that Rodrigo was still soundly sleeping beside him, his alarm yet to go off. Max by contrast, had been laying in bed wide awake for the last hour unable to fall asleep again. His throat was killing him and he couldn’t get comfortable. His nightstand had a tall pile of used tissues on it, which he was rapidly adding to by the minute and his nose wouldn’t stop tickling. Max knew if he stayed in their room much longer he would wake his boyfriend, so he decided to go try sleeping on the couch. He grabbed his pillow and half empty tissue box and walked into the living room. He say down on the couch and laid down. He shivered, regretting not grabbing a blanket, but not having the energy to get up and grab one from the hallway closet. He blew his nose as hard as he could and shut his eyes so he could go back to sleep.

Max woke up again an hour later, seeing the blanket that had been draped over his body. He sat up and saw Rodrigo rushing around their apartment getting ready to leave for work. He didn’t even notice Max was awake.

“HA-TTCHHEWW!”

Well he noticed after that. Rodrigo immediately stopped in his tracks and looked up from his phone.

“Oh hey your finally awake!”

“*cough* uh huh…”

“…well I’m about to head to work, but do you want anything before I go?”

Max shook his head.

“You’re not going to class today are you?”

Max stayed silent, knowing if he spoke it would be abundantly clear he had every intention of going. It wasn’t like he was denying he was sick, he just didn’t want to miss anymore school than he absolutely had to.

“Max don’t tell me your actually thinking about going.”

“…”

Rodrigo walked up over to the couch and wrapped his arms around Max’s shoulders.

Please stay home, if you don’t I’ll be at work worrying about you all day.”

Before Max could reply with some bullshit excuse like he “wasn’t that bad”, Rodrigo started speaking again.

“And I know you don’t wanna miss class, but it’s not like you’re gonna fail if you miss a day or 2 for your own wellbeing.”

Max loudly sighed and rolled his eyes, knowing this was another instance of him being in an argument he wouldn’t win his with Rodrigo.

“Fide I’ll sdtay hobe.” he reluctantly agreed.

“Good! Now I have to go like right now or else I’ll be late, text me if you need anything.”

Rodrigo kissed Max on the cheek, grabbed his things, and ran out the door. As soon as he left, Max laid back down on the couch and easily feel asleep again.

“HHEESSHEWW!”

“Bless you baby, are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yeah I’b sure I’b-TTSSHHEEW!”

“That’s the 3rd and 4th time you’ve sneezed in the past half hour, I’m gonna get you some medicine.”

“But-!“

“Max, just shut up and let me get it.”

It had been hours since Rodrigo had gotten home from work and him and Max had been cuddling on the couch together for the past hour. The only problem was that someone had to keep jerking away to sneeze every 5 minutes. Max would’ve taken something earlier, but everything they had besides the Tylenol was a liquid/syrup and he hated the taste of them so much he’d rather feel miserable than take it. It seemed now though he wouldn’t be getting any options as Rodrigo got off the couch walked to the bathroom to grab the medicine. Max knew he’d be glad he’d been forced to stay take it in a few hours, he really felt like awful, it was just the initial experience of it he despised. Rodrigo came back holding a thermometer along with the medicine.

“I never took your temperature yesterday so I wanna take it now.”

He stuck it in Max’s mouth and waited for it to get it’s reading. After 10 seconds it beeped and he took it out. It read 101.7 degrees, not too bad, but high enough for him to be concerned.

“You’re such a child when it comes to liquid medicine, I don’t get it.” Rodrigo muttered under his breath as he poured out a dose of NyQuil seeing Max’s disgusted face.

“I just don’t like how it tastes, what’s there not to get??”

“What I don’t get is how you can pick feeling like crap all day over taking a little medicine that maybe doesn’t taste the greatest.”

“You’re so annoying, just hand it over.”

Max snatches the capful of medicine, chokes it down, and tries to think about how it’ll make him feel less shitty instead of about how horrible it tastes. He almost gags swallowing it, but he forces himself to suppress it and finish the capful.

“That was so-*cough cough* bad.” Max complained.

“You’ll live.” Rodrigo replied, pulling him towards his chest to resume their original positions on the couch.

He planted a kiss on Max’s forehead and laid his head against the back of the couch, closed his eyes, and slowly drifted off to sleep.
