Virus Vera

Yeah, I know, we've had stories about personified viruses before, but I don't remember ever reading one with a female personified virus, so...

I usually have a story quite figured out when I decide to start writing it down, but that's not really the case this time. All I know is that I have the basics and an itch to start writing it right now, even though I'm in the middle of writing other stuff. Thus, this story might get stuck if I run out of creativity. Bear with me.

Part 1:

The common cold. Not the worst virus the world has to offer, but the fact that it has no cure and that it spreads so easily makes it quite... irritating. I mean, if it was a person then it definitely wouldn't have been someone you'd want to be near, right?

Enter Vera. Just as the common cold appears from time to time, so does Vera. You know how a cold is something that is practically always around and you don't really know where it came from? Well, Vera is like that. No one knows where Vera came from, herself included. The only thing she knows for certain is that she is a living embodiment of the common cold. Just like the common cold, she's always around, but you're normally not aware of her. She doesn't have what you might call a "regular" course of life, meaning growing up, having a family and such. Instead, she constantly disappears and reappears, like a reincarnation of some sorts. People don't remember meeting her, but they're never surprised to find her around. The only major difference between Vera and the common cold, aside from the fact that she is human, is that she can only infect women. She's pretty sure that there's a male version of her somewhere, but she has never met him and has no interest in doing so.

When it comes to personality, Vera is what you might call an "ice queen". Yes, the pun is completely intended. Think about it - she's a virus in human form, so all she really cares about is passing her cold on to others. That being said, she knows how to interact with other people. After all, she has to do that in order to get close enough to pass her cold.

If you were to go over the H.R. files of the company Vera is currently "working" at, you would not find her name anywhere. Another person working there would also not randomly remember her if she's not around or casually say her name to another person during a conversation if she's not there. She doesn't even have a specific job to do. However, Vera's impact on other workers of the company can be very real. Just ask Mary, the current victim of Vera's cold.

Today, Mary feels terrible. She has a bad cold, but unfortunately she had to come to work anyway. If you were to ask Mary how she caught her cold, she would just say that there's a virus going around, completely unaware of the fact that there's an actual virus walking around the office and her name is Vera.

"Hu Eshoo!" Mary lets out a harsh, messy sneeze into a tissue.

"Bless you" Vera tells her as she walks by her desk. She always likes seeing her victims deal with their colds. "Caught a cold"?

"Yeah, add a bad ode" Mary replies. "Hua Tshoo, Hesh Pshoo! Ugh! I should've brought by haddkerchief today".

"Ha Ha Tshoo, Hei Tshoo! Do you usually use ode?" Vera asks and sniffles.

"I odly use it whed I'b really sick" Mary says before wetly blowing her nose into a wad of tissues. "These tissue are do good, I'b just so codgested. I wish I did't leave by haddkerchief at hobe today".

"Let be have ode of those He Tshoo!" Vera says as she takes a tissue from the box and sneezes into it. Mary already has a cold, but other people might take a tissue from the box as well so Vera thinks it would be a good idea to touch it with her cold-infected hand.

"Looks like I'b dot the odly ode with a Hea Tshoo, Hu Eshoo, He Pshoooo! cold" Mary says as sneezes into her hands.

"Yeah *sniffle* it bust be the seasod" Vera says, even though it's always cold season for her. "Bake sure dot to give your cold to adyode else, Bary".

Vera wants her cold to spread around, but even more than that she wants to be the one to spread it. That's why there's a big part of her that really means what she told Mary. It would be fun to see others sick, but not as fun as seeing them get sick from her.

"I'll do Hu Pshoooooo! by best" Mary says before giving her nose several gurgling, honking blows. She doesn't remember Vera being sick and sneezing all over the place these past few days, so she has no idea that she was the one to give her this cold in the first place.

Now it's time for Vera to find new victims.

Part 2:

Giving someone else your cold can sometimes be pretty difficult. Other times, it's as simple as a walk in the park. In Sherri's case, all Vera had to do was take a literal walk in the park. Vera likes to get to work in various ways, so she can meet various people and give them her cold. The park is a place Vera likes to walk through on her way to the office sometimes. Sherri also likes spending time in the park, when the weather is nice. That's what she did the other day. She won't remember meeting Vera, talking to her or getting sneezed on by her. Today, however, Sherri has a terrible cold.

"Hue Pshoo, He Epshoo!" Sherri sneezes into a wad of tissues. Her wide nose is rapidly getting red and her sneezes are loud and messy.

"I could've sworn the weather was nice like two minutes ago" she thinks when she notices grey clouds starting to cover the sky.

"Hie Tshoo, He He Tshoo!" sitting on a bench, Sherri is so focused on her cold that she doesn't notice Vera there until Vera sneezes.

"Oh, hello" Sherri says and sniffles. "I see I'b dot the odly ode with a cold".

"Yes *sniffle* I also have a cold" says Vera. "It's dot very fud".

"Tell be about it. I feel biserable" Sherri says before letting out several gurgling nose blows into the remains of her tissues. "I've used albost ad edtire box of tissues sidce this bordig add by dose just gets bore add bore codgested".

"Bide wod't stop *sniffle* ruddig Hea Tshoo!" sneezes Vera. "Also *sniffle* I keep sdeezig all the tibe".

The sneezes. The same germ-filled sneezes that gave Sherri her cold. Of course, as mentioned above, she doesn't remember it.

"Hua Pshoohooooooooo! At least your sdeezes are dot so earth-shatterig like bide" says Sherri. "Oh do!" she calls when she notices her tremendous sneeze sent some of her stuff flying to the ground. As she starts picking them up, Vera helps her.

"Hai Tshooooo!" she sprays Sherri with a wet sneeze. Sherri is already sick and too busy picking her stuff up to care about that. Obviously, Vera doesn't have to do that, since she already gave Sherri her cold, but sometimes she sneezes on others just for fun. She is a human common cold, so that's just what she does.

"I should *sniffle* go back hobe" Sherri says as she finishes picking her stuff up. "It looks like it's godda raid add I should probably be id bed adyway".

"Feel He He Tshoo! better" Vera says without actually meaning it.

"Thadk Ha E Pshooo! Thadk you *sniffle* but I dod't thidk that's godda He Apshooo! happed ady tibe sood" Sherri says before going home. Vera can hear Sherri blowing her nose as she walks away. The sound fills her with joy.

 

If only it was always so easy to give someone your cold. Take Jade for instance. Even if she felt bad about giving people her cold, Vera would've had zero regrets about trying to get Jade sick. Jade is a girl in Vera's workplace and most other workers don't like her because she always acts like she's better than everyone. Unfortunately, this means that Jade doesn't like spending time talking to other people, so it was hard for Vera to get close enough to get her sick. That's why, when several workers were going out of the meeting room the other day, Vera seized the opportunity and sneezed on Jade as she passed her by. Normally, it was something that Jade would've made a scene about, but since it was Vera she didn't notice it.

When Vera gets to the office, she's happy to see that her efforts were fruitful. Jade is sniffling, her nose is getting red and she looks tired.

"He Tshoo!" Jade sneezes openly. "What do you *sniffle* wadt?!" she snaps at Vera when she notices that she's looking at her.

"You to cover your bouth, for a start Ai Tshooo!" Vera says before sneezing openly as well.

"What do your care? You're Ha E Tshoo! sick too" Jade says before wiping her nose with a tissue.

"If you dod't cover your bouth other people would Ha Ha Tshooooo! catch your cold" says Vera.

"That's fide by be" Jade says and sniffles. "Other people are why I got He Tshoo! sick id the A Tshoo! first place".

"No, I'm the one who got you sick" Vera thinks as Jade walks away to blow her nose in private. "And I don't want you to steal me the joy of getting other people sick. This office isn't big enough for both of us".

Later that day, Jade gets sent home early for being sick. She tries to protest, sneezing and sniffling while doing so, but to no avail.

"How could this be?" she wonders as she leaves the office. "I've been in my room all day and haven't talked to anyone. How did they notice I'm sick"?

What Jade doesn't know is that Vera works in mysterious ways, and not only when it comes to giving people her cold.

Part 3:

Home sweet home. Obviously, Vera can't spend all her time at work. She has to live somewhere. Just like her workplace, Vera's place of residence changes each time she manifests. It's usually somewhere close enough to other people, potential victims for Vera to infect. Wherever this place might be, Vera's cold is too contagious for just one building to contain. Thus, the place where Vera lives tends to turn into a "ground zero" of a cold that spreads to people throughout the area. Although she's practically the opposite of a doctor, Vera likes to make "house calls" and check up on the people she infects. Unaware to the fact that she was the one to infect them, they invite Vera in, longing for some company while they're sick.

Currently, Vera lives in a prime location. Her apartment is in a building where many women live, mostly by themselves. As mentioned before, Vera can be friendly, when she chooses to do so. A casual conversation with one of her neighbors while taking the stairs or the elevator, a few "unexpected" sneezes, that's all Vera needs to give her cold to the unfortunate person in front of her. When that happens, all Vera has to do is drop by a couple of days later and check out just how well she did.

The settings is usually similar: Used tissues scattered around; the heating turned on in a futile effort to provide some warmth; her victim(s) wearing warm and comfortable clothes, often covered in at least one blanket, usually lying in bed or on a couch. Since they're already getting up to let Vera in, a lot of them use that time to make themselves tea before returning to horizontal state.

In Lara's case, she already finished her tea before Vera arrived, so after letting her in she just goes back to bed. The empty mug on the little table by her bed is accompanied by a small glass vessel containing honey, some pills and a box of tissues that's already half empty. Back in her bed, Lara plucks a tissue from the box and brings it to her face as her eyes are starting to close and her breath starts to hitch.

"Haaa Pshi, Haa Pshooo!" she covers her face with both hands and sneezes into the tissue she's holding.

"I cad see your cold isd't goig adywhere" Vera tells her.

"Do Aaaa Pshi! add neither ab I Hi Pshoooo! I'b just godda stay id I Pshooo! bed udtil I feel Ha A Pshi! better" Lara says before wetly blowing her nose.

"That soudds like a He Tshoo, Hai Tshoo! good idea" says Vera.

"What about you? Dod't you thidk you should stay hobe id bed as well?" Lara asks through constant sniffling.

"He A Tshoooo! I have too buch work to do" Vera replies. That's a blunt lie, but Lara has no way of knowing it.

"Add the people at your work are fide with you beig there whed you're Ha Pshi, I Pshoo! so sick?"' asks Lara.

"They have to be He He Tshoo!" Vera sneezes and then takes one of Lara's tissues to blow her nose.

"There's do way I could've Hi Ipshooo! gode to work with this cold" says Lara. "I'd be too busy Ha Ha Pshi! sdeezig by head off".

Before too long, Lara decides that she's tired and wants to take a nap, so Vera leaves. She takes the stairs and goes down one level when the door of one of the apartments opens. Out comes Carol. Her hair is messy, the edges of her nose are red and she looks very tired.

"Haaaaaaaaa Eshoooooooo!" she lets out a roaring sneeze into a crumpled tissue she's holding.

"Hey there *sniffle* Carol" says Vera. "What are you doig out of E Tshooo! bed"?

"Is it that obvious that I'b sick?" Carol asks with a thick sniffle.

"There's a bad cold goig aroudd" Vera says. "I've just beed to Lara's add she's dowd with it too".

"Dot to bedtiod yourself" Carol says while wiping her overflowing nose with a tissue.

"Yeah *sniffle* I'b sick too Hie Tshooooooo!" sneezes Vera.

"Gesuddheit" Carol tells her.

"Thadks" Vera says and sniffles. "Baybe you should go back idside? You look very cold".

"Probably because I ab" says Carol. "I just wedt to He Ashoooooooo! get the dewspaper. I've beed id bed all day add odly dow I badaged to get out of He Ha Eshooooo! bed to get it Ha E Shooooooo, Hea Ashoooooooooo! I really should get back idside Ha Eshoooooo! This cold air is ticklig by dose".

Carol gets back into her apartment and Vera can hear her loud sneezes and nose blows behind the closed door. Vera is just about to head back to her own apartment when she hears a loud sneeze from behind another closed door.

"He Tshooooooooo!" the long sneeze, very loud and yet very feminine, comes from Serina. She was the very first person in the building that Vera infected, so obviously Vera can't resist the opportunity to witness such a great success.

"Cobe id" Serina calls when Vera knocks on her door.

"How's by sick deighbor doig today?" Vera asks as she enters, finding Serina on the couch in her living room covered in a blanket.

"Still super sick He Tshaaaaaaaaaa!" Serina replies and sneezes into a tissue.

As Serina blows her nose, Vera notices some similarities between the table in Serina's living room and the small table next to Lara's bed. Serina's table also has an empty mug of tea on it, as well as a box of tissue and some pills. There's also a bottle of nasal-spray on it, which Serina must have used constantly.

"This cold is kickig by butt" Serina complains. "I cad't eved rebebber what it's like to breath through by dose.

"That explaids the dasal-spray" says Vera.

"Yeah *sniffle* but it's dot really helpig be" says Serina. "Whedever I use it I bostly just edd up He A Tshooooooo! sdeezig".

"It cad sobetibes feel really good to sdeeze whed you're sick though Hai Tshooooo!" a cloud of mist can be seen in the air as Vera sneezes openly, as if to prove her point by sneezing.

"Sure, I guess" Serina says and sniffles. "It just sucks that by sdeezes are so loud".

"I kdow. I heard you sdeezig whed I walked by your apartbedt" says Vera. "I thidk I'll call you 'Sdeezy Serida' frob dow od".

"Dod't bake fud of a Ha Tshaaaaaaaaaaa! sick persod" says Serina.

"E Tshoo, Tshoo! I'b sick byself *sniffle* so I'b allowed" says Vera.

"Fair poidt" Serina says before they both blow their noses.

"Gahhhhh! I just wadt to be healthy agaid" Serina whines.

"If it bakes you feel ady better - you're dot the odly sick persod od this floor" says Vera.

"Carol's sick too, I kdow" says Serina.

"So you've seed her thed? He A Tshooo!" sneezes Vera.

"Do *sniffle* but I've Ha Tshooooooooooooooo! heard her" Serina replies. "It's like the two of us are havig sobe sort of sdeezig cobpetitiod".

"Who's widdig?" Vera asks.

"Our colds Hea Tshaaaaaaaaaaa, Ha Ha Haaaaaaaaa Tshooooooooooooooooo!" Serina sneezes and they both laugh.

part 4:

"Ha Iih Tshoooo!" Vera can't take her eyes off the girl who just sneezed.

Today, Vera decided she'd take the bus to work. She figured she might get a chance to do the old "public transportation is full of germs" routine and get someone sick, but sitting on the over side of the bus from her she found two girls, one of them with a pretty obvious cold.

Vera found that sick girl fascinating: The way she had two minor "pauses" during her sneeze; the way her nostrils moved as the sneeze was building up; the way she brought her hand to her face but the sneeze was so wet some of it still escaped. Mostly, Vera is interested in that girl's friend, sitting helplessly right in the line of fire. That is a perfect situation for giving someone a cold and Vera is envious that she's not the one to do so.

"Hey, are you O.K.?" the girl's friend asks while the girl recovers from her sneeze.

"Dot really" the girl replies. "I've caught a killer cold add I *sniffle* just cad't shake it off".

"That sucks" her friend says sympathetically.

"Yeah, do kiddig" the girl says before taking a tissue. She starts by wiping her hand, then her nose and then she proceeds to a wet nose blow.

"How did you get sick?" her friend asks.

"Beats be" the girl replies. "I bead, everyode aroudd is sdeezig add coughig, so I guess it's do big surprise".

"Ha Hie Tshooooooo!" Vera sneezes. Uncovered, obviously.

The girl gives her friend a look that says: "See? That's what I'm talking about".

"I guess you're right" her friend says. "There must be some bug going around".

"Ha E Tshoo, E Tshoo! Ugh! Sorry I'b so gross" the girl says after sneezing into a tissue.

"You can't help it, you're sick" her friend says, still keeping her sympathetic tone.

"If odly I could stop sdeezig for like five bidutes, that would be Ha A Tshooo! awesobe" the girl says before blowing her nose again.

"It'll all be over in a few days" her friend says. "You just have to let your cold run its course".

"Providig I'll A Tshoo! live that lodg" the girl says. "This cold is godda be the death of be".

"That's a tad dramatic, don't you think"?

The girl answers her friend with a productive blow.

"Anyway, I appreciate the fact that you're doing your best to cover your sneezes" her friend says. "I really don't want to get sick".

"Then you sure picked the wrong day to take the bus" Vera thinks.

"Hai Tshoo, He Ei Tshoo!" as Vera gets off the bus, she makes sure to sneeze towards that girl's friend.

"You've been sitting in front of a sick girl, but it's my cold that you're gonna catch".

That thought puts a little smile on Vera's face.

Part 5:

Even when you're very busy, it's important to make time for friends. Since Vera is mostly busy getting other people sick, if she spends time with friends it's either to give them her cold or watch them deal with it. Vera's friends change each time she manifests, but the way she treats them stays the same. First, she makes sure to spend some time with them in a way that won't allow them to escape her cold. Then, when they get sick, Vera plays the caring friend character. She doesn't mind helping them a bit, knowing that her cold won't be leaving them anytime soon.

I Julia's case, the place of contagion was a local Caffe. Vera and Julia sat there for a couple of hours the other day, talking and drinking their coffee. Naturally, Vera used that time to sneeze all over Julia, who seemed oblivious to Vera's continuous efforts to get her sick. The only thing Julia remembers from that day is drinking coffee with her friend. Well... she won't remember what it's like being healthy anytime soon.

"Heai ItsShChShoooooooo!" Vera is impressed by how delightfully messy Julia's sneeze is.

Vera visits Julia in her house, finding a perfect picture of sickness: Julia's nose is bright red, her eyes are puffy and her hair is a mess. Used tissues are scattered all over the house, a testament to Julia's hopeless battle against her constantly running nose.

"Oh god, so buch sdot" Julia groans before taking a tissue and giving her nose a gurgling blow. "Thadks for cobig over, Vera. I'b just sorry that you have to see be so *sniffle* sick".

When Vera hears Julia sniffling she knows that she did her job well. The sound of Julia's sniffles indicates that her nasal passages are completely blocked.

"Nailed it!" Vera thinks. "No air will be going through that nose anytime soon".

"Do probleb" she tells Julia. "That's what friedds are for".

"Abazig how we both have such bad colds at the sabe tibe" Julia says.

"Yeah *sniffle* truly abazig Haa He Tshooo!" sneezes Vera.

"Is that soup?" Julia asks when she notices the big pot Vera is carrying. "That's so dice of Yea hei TchShooooo! you".

"Figured you probably Hei Tshooooooo! deed it" says Vera.

"Looks like we both do" Julia says. "Cobe od - let's sit dowd add I'll get us sobe bowls".

As the girls eat the soup, Julia tries in vain to smell it.

"It's really good" she tells Vera. "I cad't really taste it, but I like the warb feelig id by stobach".

"I'b glad you *sniffle* like it" says Vera.

"Ye Yehi Hea ItschShuHooooooooooooo!" Julia's nose explodes with a spraying sneeze. "I thidk the fubes frob the soup are Yetch Shoooo! ticklig by Ya Ei Tshchshoooo! dose Yesh TchShooooooooooooo!" she says while sneezing uncontrollably.

"Ha Tshoooooooooooo! Better out thed id, I always say" Vera says before they both blow their noses.

On her way back home, Vera decides to stop at the place where she and Julia had coffee the other day. After all, she made sure to sneeze on the waitress that served them that day. She goes to the counter to buy a cup of coffee to go and she's happy to see that very same waitress behind the counter. What's even better is the fact that the tired looking waitress has a very red nose.

"Ode cup of coffee to go?" she asks Vera.

"Yes please" Vera replies.

"Cobig right Eshoo! right Ha Eshoo! Excuse be. Cobig right up" the waitress says.

As the waitress goes to get the coffee, Vera can hear her stopping to blow her nose. The wet sound is music to Vera's ears.

"Here you go" the waitress says when she returns with Vera's coffee. "He Eshoo!" she sneezes into her shoulder right after giving Vera her coffee.

"Bless you" Vera tells her.

"Thadks *sniffle* Sorry" says the waitress.

"Dod't worry about it" says Vera. "Rough day"?

"A little, yeah" the waitress replies and sniffles. "I thidk I'b catchig a cold".

"Oh you most definitely are" Vera thinks. "And not just any cold - my cold".

"There's He He Tshooo! a lot of that goig aroudd" Vera says.

"*sniffle* I cad't wait for by shift to edd so I could go hobe add rest" the waitress says.

"Thed I wod't keep you ady lodger" says Vera. "Thadks for the coffee".

When Vera walks out of the store, a noise from inside makes her look up from the coffee she's drinking.

"Ha Eshoo, Eshoo!" the waitress sneezes twice into her hands. "Gross" she says as she moves her hands away from her face and looks at them.

Vera walks away before the waitress gets a chances to notice her staring at her.

"My work here is done" Vera thinks.

Yeah, inspiration is elusive and time is something I don't always have, so when I get both I try to write as much as I can before either runs out.

Part 6:

Local medical clinics are places a person can use to find help when they're sick. Vera sees such places in a different way. Medical clinics are supposed to be places promoting health, right? Well not on Vera's watch. She likes to go to clinics, pretend to be just another person dealing with a regular cold and seeking help. When she's there, she likes to find a weak link in the clinic's staff. Usually, it's a young nurse that tries to be attentive to her patients. This gives Vera the opportunity to infect her.

That's exactly what Vera did the last time she visited the clinic. Since Vera's cold is still going strong, she has a chance to visit the clinic again and see how it was affected, so to speak, by her latest visit. Once again - it's a resounding success. The nurse is sniffling, her nose is pink and she looks like all she wants to do is sleep.

"Follow be to *sniffle* roob dubber ode please" the nurse says and Vera does.

"Lots of patiedts cobig id with colds this year?" Vera asks as they enter the room.

"About the sabe as every year, I guess Hhh Ha Ishoo!" the nurse lets out a breathy sneeze.

"Bless you" Vera tells her. "At least you dod't have to worry about Ha He Tshooooooo! catchig by cold".

"Do *sniffle* I suppose dot" the nurse says.

"Because you already caught it" Vera says in her mind.

"Sybptobs?" the nurse asks after giving her nose a light blow.

"Dorbal Ha Tshoooooo! head cold odes" Vera replies. "Sdeezig".

"Hi Ishoo"!

"Ruddy dose".

"*sniffle* *sniffle*".

"Codgestiod".

"Excuse be" the nurse tells Vera before she blows her nose again. Vera is thrilled to see the nurse presents every symptom she states.

"All id all *sniffle* it's a He He Tshooo! regular head cold *sniffle* like I said" Vera says before blowing her own nose.

"I see" says the nurse. "Udfortudately, there's dot buch I cad do to help you. Just get pledty of rest, dridk lots of fluids add your cold should be gode id a couple of days. If that doesd't happed, cobe see be agaid".

"Alright. I just wadted to bake sure it's dothig bore thad just a cold" Vera says.

"Let be just write it dowd id your bedical chart, id case you cobe here agaid" the nurse says.

"Ha Ishoo, Ihi Ishoo, Hi Hi Hi Ishoo!" a fit of sneezes causes her to drop the medical chart. When she picks it up again, she forgets she didn't write anything in it and sends Vera on her way. Vera's cold does its wonders again: There'll be no record of Vera's visit.

The nurse leads Vera back into the waiting room and then goes to blow her nose before seeing the next patient. Seeing as the next patient is a girl with a red nose, Vera sits down next to her.

"Ha Ashoo, Aaa Shoo!" the girl sneezes into a tissue.

"That's a lovely cold that girl has" Vera thinks. "Too bad it isn't mine. Oh well, you can't get them all".

"Bad *sniffle* I hate beig sick" the girl says before using her tissue to give her nose a gurgling blow.

"This year's Ha Ei Tshoooooooooo! cold got you as well?" Vera asks.

"Yea A Shoo, Ashoo! Stupid cold" the girl replies and sniffles.

"I just saw the durse add it looks like she has it too" Vera says.

"Great" the girl sighs. "At least I wod't be the Aa Shoo! odly ode Ashoo! doig the Ha Ashoo! sdeezig".

The nurse then comes and leads the girl away.

"Hei Tshoooooooooooooooooooooo!" Vera lets out a spraying sneeze as she goes outside into the bright sunlight. People around give her dirty looks, since she just got out of a medical clinic and didn't bother to cover her obviously contagious sneeze.

"Just be glad if you don't have to go in there. I left a ton of my germs inside" she tells them in her mind.

Part 7:

Infecting people at your workplace can be tricky. If you get the wrong person sick you might end up losing your job, as well as all the chances to infect people there. Sometimes it means thinking strategically and choosing your targets carefully. For Vera, however, things are much simpler. Why bother choosing your targets when no one is gonna remember you getting them sick anyway?

Still, it's not always easy giving your cold to someone at work. We've seen that with Jade, when Vera needed a moment of luck. It can get more difficult than that when you have a strict boss. Vera's boss, Paisley, is not a woman that would be easily caught off guard. Fortunately, Paisley keeps her personal assistant, Martina, by her side at all time, to help her deal with the work she has to do. Martina, with her weak immune system, was just what Vera needed.

"Hua Tshooooooooooosh!" Vera enters Paisley's office just when her boss blows some papers off her table with a huge sneeze. A red-nosed Martina is sitting at the corner of the office, blowing her nose into a tissue.

"You wadted to see be?" Vera asks. Getting an appointment with Paisley and making her think it was her idea was easy, since her assistant is too distracted by dealing with her cold.

"Bartinda *sniffles* cobe pick those papers up frob the floor" Paisley says before giving her nose a gurgling blow.

"I'b cobig Hu Ih Choo, Hi Choo!" sneezes Martina. She's sniffling constantly as she picks the papers up and puts them back on the table.

"What did I wadt to see Vera for?" Paisley asks Martina.

"I.. I.. Iiii Chooooo! dod't Choooo! rebebber. Let be check the U Chooo! diary" Martina replies.

"Do I have to He A Tshooooooosh! do everythig Choooooosh! byself?! It's bad edough that you're sick *sniffle* the least you cad do is your He Hea Tshooooosh! job" Paisley scolds poor Martina.

"Baybe it has sobethig to do with E Tshoo! this quarter's results?" Vera suggests.

"That soudds right" says Paisley. "Why did't you thidk of that?" she scolds Martina again.

"U Choo, Choo, I Choo!" Martina sneezes and sits back by her desk to blow her nose. She knows better than to argue with her boss.

"Well *sniffle* let's see the files" Paisley tells Vera.

"Sure He Ei Tshooooooooo!" Vera sneezes and hands Paisley the files she's holding.

"This doesd't look good Haaaaa Tshoooooooooooosh!" Paisley sneezes and drops the files. "Oh cobe od! Dot agaid"!

"I'll take care of that, Bartida" Vera tells the assistant as she sees she's about to get up. Seeing the chaos her cold creates is enough for Vera and she doesn't need Martina to suffer more than she already does.

"He Tshoooosh, ChshShooooosh, Ha He Tshoooooooooooosh!" picking the files up gives Vera an opportunity to admire her boss' monstrous sneezes from a different angle. Paisley lets her sneezes out freely, despite the damage they might cause to her office. Those sneezes are probably too big to cover anyway.

"There you go Hei Tshoooooooo!" Vera drops the files as she's about to hand them to Paisley.

"Is there ady chadce I cad work for ode bidute id this office without hearig sobeode sdeeze?" Paisley wonders out loud as Vera picks the files up again.

"Hi Hi Choo, Hu Choo!" Martina sneezes by her desk and Paisley gives her a furious glare.

"Huaaaaaaaaaaa Tshoooooooooooooooooooosh!" Paisley's sneeze is like a little hurricane inside the office. Fortunately for Martina, Paisley is too busy recovering from that sneeze to scold her again.

"Perhaps I better cobe back adother tibe" says Vera. She'll probably want to see these two again before they get over her cold.
