Joal 555 Posted January 8, 2022 Posted January 8, 2022 Myth - saying "pineapple" stops you from sneezing Reality - it's possible that saying something out loud is enough to distract you from sneezing, but if so, it will work with any word, not just "pineapple". Okay, your turn!
Chanel_no5 Posted January 8, 2022 Posted January 8, 2022 Okay... don't kill me, I'm sorry... 🙈 Myth: putting a finger against the underside of the nose stops a sneeze. Reality: actually, it's putting pressure on the upper lip, above the line of teeth, that can stop a tickle in the nose from becoming a sneeze.

Stimuli Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 Myth: tickling the nose, with a feather, will make you sneeze. Reality: not once has feathers even got me, or anyone I know anywhere near to sneeze.
bingochamp7 Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 Myth: saying ‘elephant’ can stop a sneeze Reality: The word elephant is not effective enough to stop the tickle and I’m speaking from personal experience.
Light Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 Myth: Pepper can make anyone sneeze easily like in every cartoon. Reality: While it works for some, those people are often set off by any spices that get in the air. As for the rest of us, inhaling pepper is more painful than sneeze inducing. 😣
Joal 555 Posted January 9, 2022 Author Posted January 9, 2022 Myth - if you sneeze with your eyes open, they will pop out of your head. Reality - they won't!

Wig_Powder Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 MYTH: Getting soaked (especially in the rain) will get you sick. REALITY: While getting cold will weaken your immune system slightly (especially if you're already recovering from an illness), it won't actually get you sick. SECONDARY REALITY: I choose to disregard this fact when writing fic, because the potential for fluff and hurt/comfort is too good to pass up.
geniesong Posted January 11, 2022 Posted January 11, 2022 MYTH: Your heart stops when you sneeze. REALITY: There is a drastic change in pressure from when you inhale to when you sneeze, and the change in pressure causes a temporary change in heart rhythm. The electrical signals in your heart are not affected by a sneeze, thus keeping your heart pumping as you sneeze.

Maybe the odd person is sensitive to them, but I’d agree that this doesn’t work for most. It's important to distinguish what "tickling your nose with a feather" means here. I'd imagine there are quite a few people who would sneeze by sticking a feather UP the nose, like others do with rolled-up tissues, provided the feather is stiff enough to actually push up there. However, the stereotypical cartoon thing is tickling the nostrils or the bridge of the nose with a feather held outside the nose, and THAT is unlikely to make many people sneeze. Okay, your turn! I thought the reason for the word "pineapple" was that with all the "n"s and "p"s, it kind of makes you scrunch your nose (sort of the opposite of a nostril flare) when you say in the right way. Though even if that were the case, lots of other words might be expected to work, like "finish", "pinch", or, ironically, "sneeze"! Ok, for one of my own... Myth: Most allergies cause sneezing Reality: Only allergies to certain airborne things do this. Food allergies (like I have) cause either a runny nose/congestion (but rarely sneezing), sore/tickly throat, stomach upset, or in severe cases difficulty breathing. Skin allergies commonly cause rashes. In reality most allergies are completely unsexy.

starstorm00 Posted May 1, 2022 Posted May 1, 2022 Myth: People in life (i.e. family, friends, and strangers) will start to wonder whether or not you have a sexual fixation on sneezing if you sneeze a lot, bless people, or talk about “sneezing” in casual conversation. Fact: You’re being paranoid. Most people would be astounded to learn that this is actually a kink.
