Did men and women used to sneeze more generations ago or do they sneeze more now?

I don't remember much about the 1980s, but I remember in the 1990s I used to hear much more sneezing than I do now in public.

I was wondering if there are any on here who remember how sneezes were in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s.

I have watched many older videos online for many years and it seems like back in the 1980s and 1990s videos there was tons of sniffling compared to the current time.
It seems like a higher percentage of guys a generation ago would sneeze more than once than they do know.

I notice 80-90 percent of college-aged guys these days a single, but a generation ago it was more like 50 or 60 percent.

I do think the average guy sneezes louder though compared to the 1990s. I remember in this county (USA) that there was much more of an effort to cover sneezes back in the 1990s and it was a much higher percentage sneezing into hands and hankerchiefs.

I wonder if the loudness of the sneezes these days is one of the reasons for the surge in single sneezers at least in this area.

I have to say though that interestingly that I lived in a city of retirees for two years and many in their 70s, 80s and 90s and it seemed like there was very little sneezing at grocery stores and restaurants even compared to this generation.

Very interesting topic. I live in the United States too. I'm in my mid 20s so I don't remember the 1990s. But as far as I can recall (the last 15 years give or take) I don't notice any increase or decrease in the "sneeziness" of people. Ever since the pandemic, I have hardly seen any sneezes in public.

But let me ask you this, have you noticed any change in how women sneeze now compared to the 1990s? In terms of loudness and wetness of sneezes?

Weirdly enough but I can sort of answer this. So part of the reason that pollen season is so fun/brutal is because pollen producing trees are very popular in landscape architecture.....but not the ones that receive it. It wasn't even one of us because we'd be a bit more subtle about it. People like flowers.

From what I remember of the 90s/early 00s there were definitely more people who covered their sneezes.

And people seemed to bring a tissue or handkerchief with them much more than these days, there was less sniffling more nose blowing I feel like

According to Wikipedia, the first antihistamines were discovered in the 1930s, benedryl was approved in 1946 and seldane (the first non-sedating antihistamine) was approved in 1985. The urban tree planting boom was post-WW2 and benedryl wasn’t available without a prescription until 1976 (but expensive at first).

Ergo, in the US at least, peak sneeziness was approximately 1950-1980. QED. Thank you and goodnight. 🎤💧
