nova_592
This has never happened to me before so I’m curious if this happens to anyone else. Last night I was drinking at a party, and I was definitely drunk. However, soon after feeling drunk, my nose started getting super itchy and tickly. I sneezed at least 6-8 times through the night. For reference, I’m usually a one and done kind of sneezer, so any time I sneeze more than 2-3 times I’m super surprised and I definitely notice. I don’t know if it’s allergies acting up, or if it was caused by the alcohol (I don’t really have any seasonal allergies so I didn’t think it was that)? I’ve read somewhere that some people may get sneezy when their drunk perhaps due to blood vessels in the nose dilating, but I’m curious if anyone else here has experienced the same/similar thing. Mal
Alcohol induced sneezing is definitely a thing! I think often it can be caused by an allergy to certain components of the alcohol you're drinking like histamines, barley, etc. Link to comment
guynextdoor
This never happened to me though I know that some people tend to be more sneezy, when they drink wine or so. Also I like to get away from everyone if I feel a sneeze coming on. Link to comment
strong sneeze32
It seems to be present in others as well, and I'm not sure if it's a common reaction. Here are some videos... Link to comment
strong sneeze32
It is really a curious phenomenon. I found some papers, hope they can help. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17927799/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15878494/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31826033/ In short, scientists have found that alcohol-induced sneezing exists, and it's not rare. However, there is still uncertainty about the mechanism. One possible explanation is that people may be allergic to some of the non-alcoholic components in alcoholic drinks, and they get rhinitis attacks after drinking. Moreover, some scholars believe that it may be related to alcohol, which may cause sneezing by vasodilation in nose. So, you may all be right! 6 hours ago, nova_592 said: I’ve read somewhere that some people may get sneezy when their drunk perhaps due to blood vessels in the nose dilating 4 hours ago, Mal said: I think often it can be caused by an allergy to certain components of the alcohol you're drinking like histamines, barley, etc. Link to comment

I have known two women in real life that are allergic: one who'd sussed it and one that hadn't. Plus there are many videos on YT, including a number of classics. The girl sitting on the side of a bath (can't remember the name of it) Another i think is called 'Drunken sneezing in Australia' but there are quite a few more inc the Russian lady mentioned above. Seems to be more common in women, but that's probably wishful thinking on my part!! Link to comment

Hajo
Thats really nothing new. Don´t know if its the real and only explanation, but I guess the histamines cause the sneezes. I found out many, many years ago, as a teenager.. When family met for a birthday party, you could be sure, that the uncle would start to sneeze after drinking a few glasses of wine, At this time of course I didnt knew about any scientific explanation, it was in the 70ies, before the internet was invited. :-) Link to comment
