What's the earliest sneeze media you remember?

Holaaa 😄

So today, I was browsing another thread in general discussion which got me wondering about the earliest sneeze media you can remember (books, movies, TV) that really sparked your realization that you felt funny or interested in people sneezing. I feel like this is a very interesting discussion because for me personally (and I'm sure for many others) encountering this media as a child was very upsetting because it was non consensual. Maybe you're one of the lucky ones who was not traumatized from encountering sneeze media in your early years :laugh2:

For example, my earliest memory of sneeze media is watching this episode of Scooby Doo with my family in which Velma gets sick. It's meant to be a comical episode but my six year old self was super upset by it. It's such a vivid memory for me because when I watched it, I had this child like realization that I felt weird about people sneezing. I was so upset that my parents had to put me to bed because I was freaking out. 😅

Anywayyy that's just me, maybe encountering sneeze media led to wonderful feelings for some of you. So, what's the earliest sneeze media you remember?

(Also not sure if this topic is ok, because many of these media clippings might involve characters under 18 so if a mod needs to remove it, please do). I'm just linking this clip as an example to the relevant discussion).

As far as media the scene I remember the most is from Alice in Wonderland (1951). My profile pic is from the movie. Seems so silly now, but that was definitely a moment of realization for me as a kid that sneezing was something special. I didn't know why or what it meant, but something clicked in my head like that scene from Inside Out when they find "a core memory". Also, what exactly is scooby doing in that last clip and why is he so happy? haha

A book called The Mitten I think, but really any kids book that had sneezing in it made me feel really awkward when my mom would read it to me; so I'd hide those books and only look at them when no one else was around.

I could be remembering it incorrectly which is probably the case because I have yet to ever find it since. I remember being pretty young and I think a Robert Munsch song(maybe not him) would come on about allergies and he would fake sneeze. It was like a kids music video thing. 🤔

A Dennis the menace comic where Dennis' dad catches a cold and/or another comic where an elephant (Pellefant) sneezes. I don't know which one was first.

I think for me one of the more memorable early ones was Cloris Leachman in The Muppet Movie (1979). If you've never seen that scene, you gotta watch it!

That was it for me as well - I was mesmerized by that as a kid!

Oddly, the first clear memory I have of seeing a sneeze and being fascinated by it was in this cartoon (go to around 4:43 to see it; in case this video ever disappears, it's a Disney Goofy cartoon where Goofy is trying to build a house and sneezes because he inhales a cloud of paint). I doubt that was my first piece of media that involved sneezing, but it's the first "media sneeze" memory I have.

Either "The Big Wash" or THAT scene in Snow White.  Or a book called "Morris Has A Cold".  Can't quite remember which came first but they were all roughly at the same time.  Oddly I don't exactly have fond memories of them, I don't want to look them up and watch them for the fetishy nostalgia.  I had no idea what was going on but it felt disturbing and wrong and bad.  I was fascinated by them but horrified by them at the same time.

Nowadays of course I know what's going on and it's no longer horrifying, just fascinating and very fun.  But things that remind me of those memories in particular give me the heebie-jeebies still.

Either a My Little Pony-episode or Pluto in "Bone Bandit", probably. :bag:  There were other things too, particularly in kids' books (I particularly remember one titled The Tea Party, where a female elephant sneezed), but I think those came later. And I never wanted to watch those when anyone else was around, or have anyone read those books to me. I think that's why I learned to read so early, so I could read every bedtime story in advance and make sure there was no sneezing in them.  It was too awkward even in those years to have parents do or talk about anything related to sneezing.

Oh man, it's that old cartoon "Bone Bandit" where a gopher tortures Pluto with goldenrod for me 😅 I remember being totally captivated by the buildups and Pluto's helplessness in it all. I was really young at the time, and didn't fully understand, but I knew it was significant. I talked about it to a friend at school the next day on the playground and they didn't understand at all. I think that's when I knew it was singular and something to keep to myself lol.

Luckily, my family wasn't around when I watched it, at least that I can remember. But they sure did ruin plenty for me growing up LOL. Just like many people are saying here, was a very awkward and awful time whenever I got stuck with a family member during a book or show with sneezing in it. When I got my first personal computer, it was a gift beyond compare haha.

This is exactly how I feel! I watched the Clip I linked out of curiosity to see if it was the right one and it brought back a weird icky and unsettling feeling. So interesting so many of us had similar experiences.

Not sure what the earliest was.  Probably mostly cartoons like Alice in Wonderland, Dumbo, Mickey's Elephant, Pluto Junior, Bone Bandit, Tiny Toons, etc.  These often had really over the top sneeze scenes so I guess they left an impression.  Also picture books like The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs, "Ah-Choo!" by Mercer Mayer, and "Stand Back Said the Elephant I'm Going to SNEEZE!!"

I definitely had those Velma sneezes recorded on a hidden VHS tape back in the day.  I must have watched it so many times.

I'm surprised I never heard of this one.  I wonder who wrote it?

No idea. 🤷 And I don't know if it was an internationally published book either, I know another forummer has mentioned it but I think they were from the Swedish-speaking part of Finland.

The two that you can find on YT are Cloris Leachman in the Muppet Movie, which some already mentioned. And the Count on Sesame Street counting flowers. 😱 Always made me vaguely uncomfortable, yet I somehow couldn't look away. 😅

But there was this other saturday morning Cartoon about a big red dog (no, not Clifford, this was the '70's) and there was an episode where the kids and the dog were going to meet some famous dog trainer (IIRC?) but it turned out he was allergic to dogs? Yeah, it doesn't make sense as I remember it. 🤣 But that one scene where the dog is jumping on him and he sneezing and trying to say he's allergic to dogs always stuck with me. Would love to know what it was called.

My earliest memory of sneeze media is this episode of Tom and Jerry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXt-Qhx9EG8

At 1:55 in the video, Tom uses pepper to induce the elephant to break out in a giant sneeze with many hitches.

At that time I felt excited and uneasy, and a little embarrassed. I wanted to keep watching to see if the elephant would sneeze again, but I also wanted to change the channel in case my family noticed I was watching a sneezy video, especially my sister.

My earliest memory of sneeze media is a video that is no longer on YouTube which I believe was simply titled "some people sneezing"
