ticklywombat
Zach tried not to get sick. He tried so hard. But he had to go to the office on Monday for meetings, and three different people had colds. He stayed away from the coughs and sneezes as best he could, washed his hands thoroughly before and after every meeting, did his best not to touch his face. It was all for nothing. Zach wakes up on Thursday morning with a telltale, tingling discomfort in his nose. Day one of a cold always goes the same way for Zach. First that weird uncomfortable tingle. Then, either before or after the first little scratch in his throat, it'll start to tickle. Not too bad at first, just a tiny flicker of irritation that comes and goes, but slowly, the tickles get stronger, and more frequent. It usually takes hours for the first sneeze to hit, but it always seems to open the floodgates, and very soon thereafter, he's a helpless mess, sneezing and shivering uncontrollably as the cold has its way with his body. At least he's working from home this morning. Zach fumbles his way out of bed and makes straight for the shower. He's in his home office forty minutes later, putting the finishing touches on this afternoon's presentation before diving into the day's reports. He gets in nearly two hours of solid work. It's a few minutes before ten when he hears himself clear his throat, and only then does he notice it. The tiniest scratch. Ugh, fine. He makes himself finish his sentence, then gets up and goes to the kitchen. He makes a cup of tea, and dumps a couple of spoonfuls of honey into it. He takes a sip of the tea as soon as he's back at the desk - way too soon. It's too hot to drink. So hot it's still steaming. A tendril of steam curls up into his nose - - which tickles, just for a second. Then it's gone, but Zach knows how this goes. Once the tickles start coming... He's giving his presentation at two, and it's only fifteen minutes long. He has to last two hours and - he checks his watch - eighteen minutes without sneezing. It can take him most of the day to work up to that first sneeze. It'll be fine. Five minutes later, he remembers his tea, and takes a sip. Warm air rises off it, inevitably making its way to his nose, and he feels a drop of moisture form at the back. The drop runs down the inside of his nose, tickling him, and he wipes it away on the back of his hand, ignoring how his nose momentarily wrinkles. He waits until the tea is lukewarm before he finishes it. It doesn't help much. Every few minutes, the tickle creeps back. Just for a second or two at a time, not enough to cause a reaction beyond those brief wrinkles. He focuses on his work to the best of his ability, but every tickle drags his attention away from his slow, meticulous work. A lot of turning raw numbers into information that the higher-ups can understand. It's nearly a quarter to eleven before he feels another drip form at the back of his nose. It hangs there for a few seconds, then rolls. Slow. Ticklish. The wet makes him want to sniff, but he resists the urge. He wipes his nose with his hand, then gets up for a box of tissues. Good job, too, because another drip follows, then another. By eleven, his nose is running in earnest, and the scratch in his throat is getting worse. He keeps wiping. At twenty past he scoops up the scattered used tissues from his desk, tosses them with irritation into the bin underneath, then grabs a tissue from the box, just too late to defeat the urge to sniff. Sniffing tickles. The tickle holds. Zach freezes, waiting for the inevitable reaction, and - yup, there it is. His nose twitches. But it's fine, he only has to last another three hours. He can turn into a sneezing mess after the presentation. He gets more and more distracted as the next hour passes. He doesn't want to make more tea, but his throat's starting to hurt. He's pretty sure he has cough drops in the bathroom, and spends a good five minutes hunting through the bathroom before he admits defeat. No cough drops... tea it is. Tea and lunch, because he has to leave in twenty minutes. He makes himself a sandwich along with the tea, and tries to ignore when the steam tickles his nose. And tickles. And tickles. His nose keeps twitching, and as he takes a sip of his tea, the tickle sets in hard, and his breath catches momentarily in his throat. Stutters for a second, then releases. Stop it. A moment later the tickle is gone again, but just a couple of minutes later, it creeps back. Zach stops moving, sandwich halfway to his open mouth, and feels his nostrils flare in irritation. The tickle doesn't leave. Zach says, "Heh." A second later the tickle fades again. Zach finishes his sandwich, then the cooling tea. Wipes his nose, wipes it again before getting up, but as he's carrying his plate and mug back to the kitchen, the sensation of wetness in his nose gets too much. He sniffs. The tickle sparks up again, making his nose twitch, and Zach's mouth comes open. "Hheh." No. He resists the urge to sniff while he puts his dishes in the sink, then makes double time back to the desk, where he blows his nose hard before packing up his laptop. Time to get to his meeting. Five minutes later, he’s walking down the stairs to the lobby, dabbing at his nose with a tissue as he walks. Every now and then a particularly irritating drop brings the tickle creeping back, but he’s ready for them now, keeping his mouth firmly shut against the little temptation to inhale. Wait. Let it tickle, it’ll be gone in a minute. What he’s not ready for is the cold air outside. He breathes in through his nose, unthinking, and the change in temperature makes his nose wrinkle sharply. The tickle spikes, and his mouth drops open. “Hhehh…” He shoves a finger underneath his twitching nose, and after a couple of seconds frozen, he manages to let the breath out. But it’s a ten-minute walk to the train station, and even breathing through his mouth, he can’t keep the cold air from invading his nose, which is starting to stream. He can feel the rims of his nostrils getting tender as he wipes them over and over, pulling out a fresh tissue every couple of minutes. He can feel them twitching every time the tickle reasserts itself, and with each tickle, the temptation to breathe in, one of those sudden, sneezy breaths, gets a little stronger. He buys five travel packs of tissues at the station kiosk. The cashier takes one look at his face and says, “Hope you feel better soon, mate.” Zach nods and picks up the pace to catch his train. He just makes it, breathing hard from the run, nose ticklish, twitching and leaking in the cold air. The train is warmer again, and as he presses the tissue to his nose to sop up the mess, he feels it wrinkle again in protest at the temperature change. It tickles, and he presses the tissue harder against his nose, trying to defeat it. But the tickle is too strong. "Ehhhh... hheehhhh..." He feels his chin tip up slightly on the second helpless inhale, but then the tickle recedes, leaving behind a bit of tension in his nose that wasn't there before. Zach knows that tension. He's starting to feel sneezy. Do not sneeze. He presses the tissue harder against his nose, trying to clear up the fluid that keeps tickling him on its way out, and tries to focus on anything else but his nose. It's a forty-five minute train ride to the office. By the end of it, the tension in the back of his nose has become restless pressure, teasing him with the need to explode. Every tickle is a threat now, because he wants to sneeze. He's starting to want to really badly, but he can't let it happen. He's got to get through this presentation, and then he can go home and be a sick man all weekend. As the train draws towards his stop, Zach pulls a fresh tissue out of pack number two. Most of his pockets are now stuffed with used tissues, waiting for him to find a rubbish bin. He unfolds the tissue, bringing it close to his nose, and the paper brushes the tip of his nose too lightly. "Ehhh - " Zach's reaction is instant. He can feel the sneeze threatening, and tries to close his mouth without success. "Hhehh - eeeehhhh - " He manages to contain it at the last moment, pressing the tissue firmly to his nose, feeling it twitch and wriggle in his grip, full of uncomfortable pressing tension. He gets off the train with the tissue still held over his face, but his nose keeps dripping fluid, wearing the paper thin. He doesn't realise the tissue has a hole in it until he steps out of the station and the cold air hits his twitching nose. A tickle springs up and Zach's head jerks back. "Ehhh!" He fumbles in his pocket with his free han, searching for a clean tissue. The pressure in his nose is getting worse. "Ehhh!" With his head tipped back, fluid is running the wrong way, up his nose. He can't restrain a sniff, pulling the fluid back, and a noseful of more cold air. "Ehhhh-HEEEHHH - " He gets the clean tissue to his nose, but the tickle is receding. "Ehh... ehh..." The last couple of hitches are uncontainable, but the urge to sneeze is fading. For now. Zach gives his nose a couple of angry blows, changes tissues again, and strides across the road to the office building. The building is warm inside. Zach holds the tissue over his nose to protect it from the worst of the shift in temperature, but he still feels another tickle creeping up on him. He swipes his pass and thumbs the button for the lift, but it's on the eighth floor, and is taking forever to come down. He can feel his jaw starting to slacken as the tickle gets stronger. Teasing him. Nagging at the pressure at the back of his nose. He clenches his jaw muscles. The tickle will go eventually. All he has to do is wait it out, without - - without - "...heh..." - without letting himself sneeze. That's gonna be hard, but it's not - "..hheeh..." - impossible. He just has to control himself until this is - "hhhehhhh..." - over. "Hhhehhhhh..." It tickles. The lift dings, doors opening, making Zach jump, and his shaky control takes a heavy hit. "HEEEEHHH!" He almost, almost, almost lets it go, but manages at the very last moment to contain himself. He steps into the lift, thumbs the 4 button, and leans back against the wall. God, he really wants to sneeze. The pressure is more and more intense, making his nose shift and wriggle. All it'll take is a little spark, another little tickle to light the fuse and set off the needed explosion. Except he can't sneeze. Not yet. He checks his watch: five minutes to the presentation. A fifteen-minute talk, uncomfortable but bearable on his scratchy throat. Twenty minutes, and he can let the sneezes take over. Once he starts, he knows, he won't stop for a while. That's how his colds always work. He makes it to the conference room without incident, only a couple of minutes ahead of time - but all he needs to do is plug his laptop into the projector and open Powerpoint. The board settle into their seats. Zach opens his laptop and begins. The first few minutes of the talk go fine. The sneezy pressure in his nose is intense, and he can hear the tension in his own voice, but hopefully it's not so noticeable to the board. But a few slides in, he feels a little tickle start to build, and talking doesn't do it any good at all. "...as you can see from the nehxt slide..." The n sound pushes air down his nose, over the tickly spot. He pulls a tissue from his pocket, wipes the end of his nose. "Scuse me." And presses on. But the tickle isn't going anywhere, and it's getting harder to talk past it. "...the fihhgures clearly shh - show..." He pauses to get control of his voice. "Clearly show thah - thah - thahht - " Abruptly, the tickle fades, leaving him with urgent pressure in his nose and a scratchy voice. Good. He gets through a few more slides before another tickle sparks up. "...these nuhh - nehh - numbaaahh - " Oh no. He feels his chin lift and tries to force it down. Tries to force his mouth closed. But it ticklesticklestickles - "Aahhh - " Don't sneeze don't sneeze don't sneeze. He feels his nostrils flare, whole nose scrunching, the tickle finally taking over and not letting go. "AAAH!" No, not like this, not in front of the whole board. He still has four more slides to go, and if he sneezes now, he won't be able to stop. "AAAH - AAAAH - " Oh no oh no oh no. "AAAH - " He has absolutely no control over this now. The sneeze has him. Building building building until he can't possibly hold it - "AAAATSCHOOOO!" Several people around the room say, "Bless you!" "Thank you." He sniffs and dabs at his nose with the tissue. He's already ticklish again. "Excuse me. As I was saying, the numbers here dehh - demonstrehhh'tschhuu! 'Scuse me. Demonstrate that the customer behhh - behhhh - ehhtschu! 'Scuse meeh'tschu! Ehh'tschu hehchu ehh'TSCHIEW!" He sniffs heavily. He needs a new tissue. "The cuhh - cuhhh - HAHTSCHIEW! AAAAH - " He freezes, one hand reaching for his pocket for a tissue, the other flapping near his face. "AAAAH - HAATSCHUU! AA'TSCHUU! AAACHOOO! Ehhhh - " He can't stop. He gets a pack of tissues out of his pocket, but drops them on the floor, and he's going to sneeze again any second. It's a last resort, but he cups both hands in front of his face. "Ehh'TSCHUH! Ehhhtshoo! Hhhtschew! Hhheh... hhhh... HHEEHHH..." God, what a mess. His head is starting to ache. "Zach," says a voice. He cracks his eyes open to look, nose twitching. It's his boss, Ellen, talking. "You're clearly not" "HHHEEHHH'TSCHUH!" "well. Why don't we reschedule this until you're feeling" "Hhehhhh..." "better?" "Hhhehhh... hhhehhTSCHU! Might hhhehh be a good hhehtschu hhhehtshu hhh'SHOO 'scuse meehhh - " "Oh my god," says one of the board. Zach can't even tell who it is. "Ehhh'TSCHU!" "Zach," Ellen says, as Zach looks up. His nose still tickles. He can feel the next fit already building, but he has a bit of time to breathe. The board are beginning to file out of the room. "Why don't you sit down?" He sinks into a chair. His head is killing him, his nose hurts from all the sneezing, and a chill is starting to run down his back. All the cold symptoms hitting him at once, as usual. Ellen sits near him. Zach wants to tell her to stay away, but the truth is he just sprayed the entire board with germs, and anyway he doesn't trust his mouth right now. That fit could start any second. "Why didn't you just tell me you were ill? We could have had this meeting another day." "I wanted to - " That's as far as he gets before the tickle takes over. "Hhheh - hheehCHU!" And he's off again. "EEHHTSCHU! Ehh'TSCHIEW! Ehhchuh ehchoo etschu!" Big sniff. Big tickle. "Hhhhh - HHEEHHH - HHAAAH - " Ellen's voice calls, "LEWIS!" Her PA pops his head through the door, just as the next sneeze takes Zach over. "AAHHTSCHOO!" "Jesus... Yes?" "Lewis, could you please call Zach a cab?" Link to comment
