Monkee sneezes!

You know, a while back I was searching for Monkees episodes with sneezing in them, had compiled a mental list, and forgotten all about it... until this evening... and

There are quite a few of them! Unfortunately I can only have the season 2on DVD, and have yet to watch it. Up til now I've only seen snippets on YouTube, and have been reading episode synopses online. So my knowledge is spotty. But anyway, here is what I know for sure--

Too Many Girls (Davy and Fern)- season 1, episode 15- The boys go to a fortune teller who is plotting against them. She needs them to believe in her powers, so she forces her daughter to make the predictions come true-- Mike is going to get a flat tire, and Peter is going to come down with a 24-hour virus. (All this to lead Davy to fall in love with her daughter.) So, her daughter pours pepper all over Peter's jacket, which he'd hung up on a coat rack at the door, and uses a nail to stab a hole in a tire on the Monkeemobile. After the boys have their fortunes told, they laugh it off and leave.

Mike: Well, it's just ridiculous. Davy's not gonna fall in love in 24 hours, Peter's not gonna catch a 24-hour virus, and we're not gonna get a flat tire--oh, we've got a flat tire.

Peter [putting on jacket]: There must be a logical explanation. I mean... ah ah.. atchoo! Hrm, I must be coming down with a cold...

It was a glorious moment. The video that I first saw on YouTube has since been removed, but hopefully when there aren't family members wandering around the house I can try to find another one! After this, the boys panic because they don't want Davy to meet his true love and leave the band, so they spend the next 24 hours trying to sequester him... I found it interesting/disappointing that nobody ever mentioned Peter's alleged cold again. He didn't sneeze any more, but somehow nobody noticed that he didn't get sick.

A Coffin Too Frequent- season 2, episode 43- The episode begins with the boys settling into bed for the night, when they hear suspicious noises downstairs, get nervous, and creep into the hallway to see what's going on. As they're making their way down the hall, Peter sneezes, startling everybody. A bit later, as they're talking to their unexpected visitors, Peter sneezes again. Mrs. Weatherspoon, a little old lady, is convinced he has a cold and rushes him upstairs for some TLC. He spends most of the rest of the episode trapped in bed, and occasionally we get to see him getting nurtured. In truth, I'm not sure he was really sick?

Unfortunately I never managed to find the beginning part of the episode on YouTube, so I can't really say anything about it-- I just read about it on the Monkees Episode Index website. (Soon as I watch it on DVD I'll fill you in on any juicy details! Gah, I'm such a lazy bum. )

Art For Monkees' Sake- season 2, episode 37- At the climax of the episode, the Monkess break into an art museum to return a painting. Mike Nesmith narrates their daring mission (Mission Ridiculous), introducing each Monkee as though he's a superhero, as he climbs onto the roof of the building. Micky is the last to appear-- "Last, but not least, is The Los Angeles Leopard, known in Peoria as The Pantherman, and somewhat hampered by Low Resistance To The Night Air--" at this point Micky takes a deep breath, cups his hands over his nose and mouth, and doubles over with an adorable heh-tchshoo! and the others shush him to be quiet --"he is the only weakling in our chain."

Video once again appears to have been removed from YouTube.

Uh.... last one I can think of at this very moment...

The Monkees In Manhattan- season 1, episode 30- Sometimes an episode will run up a bit short, so a brief interview with the Monkees will be tagged at the end. Guess what, we've got a real sneeze this time!! I have seen the section of the interview that comes right before it, and the part right after it, but not one that includes it.

At any rate, here is the discussion surrounding the sneeze in question--

Mike: I think we oughta go on a National Monkees Love Something Ugly This Week.

Davy: Yeah. Man you better watch out for these guys.

Mike: You are not. I'm uglier than you.

Davy: You are not. I'm the ugliest.

Mike: I'm the ugliest! It's me, it's me, it's me!

Micky: All right! I lose!

(Peter sneezes)

Davy: Wait, Keever-- come here a minute. C'mere. C'mere. Wait, man. Wait, man.

Peter: (to Keever, blocking his shot) Will you get out of my key, please?

Davy: Just fixin' your face up, man.

Keever (laughing): Okay, alright.

Sooo... it happens randomly in the middle, and we know it isn't edited out because it's on a Monkees website as being there!

Okay. I think that's enough to keep you all busy for a while! If you find or upload any Monkees clips that include one of our lovelies sneezing, please post a link!

I am a HUGE Peter fan! And at one time, I had all of the episodes where he sneezed on VHS tape. I think I still have a few on the one remaining tape in my posession. I love the episode A Coffin Too Frequent! And his real sneeze in that interview? YUM! justmehere used to have it on her clip archive.

There are a few more episodes I know he sneezes in. I am bad at remembering the names, but I beleieve the one I'm thinking of is called The Monkees Paw. Micky makes a wish on the paw that he would stop talking and loses his voice. Then they go to the magician that sold it to him in the first place. During the first several seconds of the music montage towards the end of the episode, the magician pulls some flowers out of his sleeve and hands them to Peter, who sneezes repeatedly.

There is also an episode where they all end up in a casino, and during one of the songs, they keep passing a bunch of yellow flowers around, and whoever is holding them sneezes. You can't hear the sneezes because of the music, but it's cute to watch.

Davy sneezes in the episode where they meet a frankenstein-type monster, and the monster I think says gesundheit to him. Which was funny, even though Davy's sneeze was way fake!

Gaaaaah I know, right?? C'mon, Mike! I know apparently he was very picky about what he would and would not do on the show-- for instance, he was only a Monkee Man in one episode as I recall. Ridiculous boy. Doesn't want to sneeze for the camera? If we ever find a clip of him sneezing, I'll probably fall out of my chair.

I'm such a dork I had to look up what song that was... "The Door Into Summer"... which, incidentally, I've never ever heard. (And "Words" happens to be one of my favorite songs, too! That montage was spectacular. And I loooove Micky's voice. )

I remember "Sympathy For The Texan"! I really liked it. I totally flipped out when I realized that the forum had a Monkees/Beatles fan writing stories. It got me signed up waaay faster than I might have otherwise. As I recall you weren't really sure where to take the story next?

Uhhh... what a tough choice... I'd love to read both stories! So, I say it's really up to you, Linda. The piece that inspires you the most at this moment is the one that you'll have more fun writing. If you'd really love to do both... you could flip a coin? I don't know, I like the idea of both. They're worth your time, Artistic Paws! Even if the TV show is too cheesy for you (it took me a couple episodes in the beginning to stop twitching), the music's still great. For instance, Shrek's version of "I'm A Believer" is alright, but the Monkees did the original.

Not to mention they're all reeeeally cute once you get to know them.

Yes, those are both great songs! And the show is very random and silly, but I think that's why I enjoyed it so much. I also loved how they all had such distinctly different personalities.

Off-topic here, but I had a dream this morning where Davy Jones was singing the US National Anthem at a baseball game I went to.

Hey everyone! I was just watching a bunch of Monkees interviews on YouTube (because I've got homework to do, you know?) and this was amusing. Mike is imitating Frank Zappa and Frank Zappa is imitating Mike... overall it is a weird interview, and both are in disguise. There is no sneezing, but Mike's fake nose keeps falling off in the beginning, and he keeps sniffing to make it stay on, and well... ...let's just say I liked it.

In other news! I watched the interview with Peter's allegedly real though fake-sounding sneeze... I vote it's real, because if you listen closely you can hear Keever say "bless you" quietly to him right as Davy is jumping into the shot. Not to mention his breath right before and after seem real. Just wanted to say. Yay.

I was also scrolling through the comments again and I was wondering, why does Davy sneeze in the Teenage Monster episode? When I first read the comment I misread it and thought maybe the monster was a werewolf, and thought he was probably allergic to the fur. But it's just a Frankenstein monster. Though there is another episode in which the Monkees are in a castle and a werewolf is wandering around... unfortunately I don't think anyone is allergic to it...

That is awesome. I'd love to hear it in real life!! Unfortunately the Monkees have yet to infiltrate my dreams...

OH- And I also wanted to add... Yes, so Mike is picky about what he will and won't do onscreen. For instance, no known sneezes. But in Monkees On The High Seas (?) he gets sea sick in the beginning and is absent for the rest of the episode. My speculation is that he wanted out and the script writers were ticked off at him and decided to embarrass him. Have yet to find a video of that part though.

Hey! Okay, so I'm resurrecting the Monkees thread.

While away at camp, I was watching Monkees episodes on my laptop, and found a clip in which Mike appears to stifle a sneeze... or hiccup... or something. It's kind of weird-looking. LovelyLinda and I can't quite decide what it is, but I would looove to think that it's a sneeze.

Aw, boo. I guess the hunt is still on! But at least I had a lot of fun freaking out over this one for a while.

I maintain hope because there were many instances on the show when imperfect takes were used. You can hear fumbled lines, see people trying not to laugh, etc...

Like, I was going through some of the clips that were posted earlier in this thread, and I cannot believe for the life of me that they kept the take in I Was A Teenage Monster where Davy sneezes!! I've watched it numerous times, and it's pretty clear that the first sneeze is real, and of course the second is so fake that it's a bit painful to watch. But in my overly-analytical and Monkee-crazed mind, it begs the question- why?? The first sneeze could easily be missed if you're only watching the episode once and aren't studying every move that Davy makes (although you can hear it ). Or, if it bothered the producers, why not do the scene again? But instead they make Davy do this super-random fake second sneeze, which almost draws more attention to the first. Uh, okay.

Heh... yeah, that's my thought process on the thing. And several things about it nearly make me burst with glee. You can hear Davy's first sneeze, which is extremely cute, and he's totally doubled over, I guess to shield the others, although he got his hand over his chest/stomach rather than his face. Aaaand that right afterward, a moment before the fake sneeze, Mike and Micky seem to acknowledge him, though I can't make out exactly what they say. But gaaaaah... Monkee sneeze-talk!

Um, I think it's time for me to go strap myself into bed.
